You brought up Verdun, now prepare for the lyrics to the Sabaton song, "Fields of Verdun"
As the drumroll started on that day
      heard a hundred miles away
      A million shells were fired
and the green fields turned to grey
the bombardment lasted all day long
yet the forts were standing strong
      heavily defended
now the trap's been sprung and the battle's begun
      Descend into darkness
      303 days below the sun
      Fields of Verdun
      And the battle has begun
      no where to run
      father and son
      fall one by one
      under the gun
      Thy will be done
      And the judgement has begun
      no where to run
      father and son
      fall one by one
      Fields of Verdun
Though a million shells have scarred the land
no one has the upper hand
from the ground above to trenches
where the soldiers make their stand
as the trenches slowly turn to mud
and then quickly start to flood
      death awaits in every corner
as they die in the mud
      fill the trenches with blood
      Descend into darkness
      303 days below the sun
      Fields of Verdun
      And the battle has begun
      no where to run
      father and son
      fall one by one
      under the gun
      Thy will be done
      And the judgement has begun
      no where to run
      father and son
      fall one by one
      Fields of Verdun
Fields of execution, turned a wasteland from the grass
"Thou shalt go no further" it was said "they shall not pass"
the spirit of resistance and the madness of the war
      so go ahead!
      face the led!
      join the dead!
      though die!
      where you lie!
      never asking why!
      Descend into darkness
      303 days below the sun
      Fields of Verdun
      And the battle has begun
      no where to run

All the guns made by this same company (RSC) are really interesting.
We also have the Ribeyrolles which was another automatic rifle concept, an extremely cut down version of the Chauchat sometimes classified as an early SMG but probably closer in reality to a carbine-length battle rifle (think the SCAR-H), and the RSC itself, which was a semiauto rifle based on the same basic concept (RSC stands for Ribeyrolles, Sutter, and Chauchat, who all lent their names to various weapons of the era). Also fun fact: these guns were all designed by a bicycle company.

I love the Chauchat. It’s such a misunderstood gun. Sure, it had awkward ergonomics, a slow firerate, and weird ironsights, but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. And even though the open magazine had the possibility of letting dirt and other particles into the gun, but this is WW1 we’re talking about. Dirt, mud, and all that other stuff got *everywhere*. Every gun in that war had to have jammed at some point. Sure, it’s outcompeted by modern LMGs, but for it’s time, it was a decent piece of machinery. My father never surrendered his love for the PIG, even rambo'd it when he had the chance before getting his verbal abuse for doing it. The M60 isn't exactly known as the best LMG in history, it's not known for reliability or it's clearly light near 30 pound weight with ammo but he'd prefer that hunk of problems and the asbestos gloves for that "quick change barrel" over an M16A1. When it didn't jam it was good. Really applies to anything, as long as it works it works.

Ian says that it’s impossible to replicate the strain the weight and size of a real weapon can put on a soldier while maneuvering around, that may be true in 3a shooters but give a try to SQUAD after the newest update. Sprinting uphill, stopping and trying to get a quick target picture with a 4x acog is pretty much impossible now, regulating how much fatigued you are is very much a game mechanic if you want to engage target at range quickly and accurately. Even at close ranges accurate semi auto fire is way more effective that bursting
