6:28 The string winder makes a big difference because now when you go to restring your stringed instrument that's fitted w/ mechanical pegs, all you need to do is turn the handle.
Bought a set today.
Thanks for the very clear instructions.
By far better than ebony ones.
I live in Australia and the humidity is an enemy to violin tuning.
Good to hear Peter! Thank you for your kind words!
@@maestrokimon
They are on!
I cannot imagine how I managed without them.
They are a little heavier than normal pegs and noticeable but I can go with that.
Brilliant invention.
Sorry for bothering you, but how it goes now? Thinking about buying these. @@petercane6890
Thank you for demonstrating them and how to install.
You are welcome!
I'm going to install these on my Hardanger fiddle Thanks for the lesson!
You are welcome!
@@maestrokimon We now have string winders designed for them, which means you can litterally crank the tuners when restringing it, like a Guitar.
They are a very clever device, thank you for demonstrating them.👍
Thanks for watching!
You should try them on one of your violins bluehoo.
Nancy Milawski I have two more violins in progress a low and high arched model. I might try these pegs on them. Hopefully will be posting a video before the end of the year. I’ve been very busy with other projects and haven’t had the time I would have liked in the Fiddle shop. Thanks for commenting 👍
@@bluehoo0 I look forward to your next video. Real life can really get in the way. Thanks for your comment and sharing your violin building with the world. 😀😀
Hi excuse me
Wich looks more natural, knilling planetary, or wittner pegs?
And for you Wich is better??
Thanks!
I like the jig you made for cutting off the end of the peg. I've fitted Knilling Perfection pegs on one of my fiddles and I want to try these on another one. These look easier to install, but the Perfection pegs weren't that bad either. They thread into the wood.
They both work very good, i think that the choice is a matter of taste.
Thank You so very much for suggesting these !!
I'd love to give tgese a try
They work very good! Also for cello!
Gracias por compartir maestro, saludos desde Venezuela!
Thank you for your kind words! My greetings to Venezuela!
Thank you. I'll be putting these on one of my instruments, maybe two. I have them on another.
They do work fine don't they?
Nice job. Thanks!
Have you seen or heard where tgese could be used on a guitar or mandolin or Ukulele ???
Thank You for all that you do
I haven't seen it but you could definitely try!
@@maestrokimon I don't think they're a good match for Steel String Guitar or Mandolin because the string tension is just too high for those pegs, they use Guitat Machine Head tuners and they're stronger.
I think all Acoustic Violins, Violas, and Cellos would benefit from these Mechanical Pegs cause they turn more smoothly, meaning you don't need fine tuners on the tailpiece. The Guitar style Machine Screw head tuners are a better match for Electric and Acoustic-Electric instruments since they sound best through an amp.
Another brand of geared violin pegs is Pegheds. I had them installed on my Magic Fluke Cricket (Travel Fiddle) when I ordered it. Mya-Moe Ukuleles used to offer them as an option. Here’s a link to the old owners (now retired) video on how to install them. ua-cam.com/video/gW8Ox8j7EBg/v-deo.html. Chuck Lee Banjos also often come standard with these pegs. I’m going with Wittner in the future because I like their look and because I believe they have an 8 to 1 gear ratio. Pegheds are (I think) 4 to 1. Knilling (“Perfection”) also makes geared violin pegs. Thanks!
I know the Pegheds but haven't been able to put my hands on them yet! I have made a review of the Perfection pegs by Knilling though. Have a look here if you want: ua-cam.com/video/R-T1Qt--fuI/v-deo.html
maestro-Kimon I’ve seen it. I’m no longer totally convinced that geared tuners are the answer for every instrument. Maybe for instruments with fragile (Royce Burt pointed out in one of his videos) pegheads or for those Fiddles used for live performance/Jams (Folk/Rock). Fine tuners on the tailpiece negate having to use the pegs very often. Thanks!
Hi, I ordered a pack but I am so scared, I do not want to damage my fiddle. I will do it as gentle as I can. Thanks for the video, is really helpful.
Do you have the correct tools to do the work? If you have the and go gently there is no reason to be afraid!
@@maestrokimon At the end I did not use the reamer, the pegs' size was the correct one, I just cut them a bit and I used sandpaper to polish them. I notice an immediate change in sound and vibration on my fiddle, I am more than happy with that. Maybe I will go for a wooden tailpiece but I will leave it to my luthier. Thanks again.
Different sizes can be ordered. Is the procedure to remove a peg and measure the hole with a precision vernier caliper?
Can you do a video about fitting the bridge?
It's in the planning!
Υπάρχει πρόβλημα εάν το σφίξιμο γίνεται προς τα δεξιά και όχι προς τα αριστερά; για το κλειδί εννοώ εάν υπάρχει συγκεκριμένη φορά σφιξίματος
You didn't use any glue on the pegs to hold them in place?
You don't have to glue them! That is something that I like a lot. They have some small bulges that ancor the peg on its place.
Glue?? 😂😂😂🙄🙄🙄
Well one of mine came loose. So glue it is...
@@gertmana1789 what type of glue did you use? I've installed on two violins and one peg keeps slipping.
what is the difference between Wittner and Knilling ? I use wittner, for my both cellos, but many times the perfect tune goes away. Is Knilling better?
Knilling has a smother tune for sure. With Wittner, you feel the gears. And in my opinion, knilling look better.
Would these work on a flamenco guiter?
Have a look on the website of Wittner (the link is in the description), the have a model for guitars but I have never used it.
What is the price for the pegs?
You have to have a look at your local music shop or Amazon
With these you can use a string holder (tail piece) with the lightest possible weight. Would this be advantegous to the sound?
lighter is not always better! have a look to my video about the tailpiece: ua-cam.com/video/KTLMjZ8znbk/v-deo.html
Very helpful - thank you. Are these pegs are available for Oud?
I think that they do. Have a look to their website.
Does this prevent slippage? That's my main issue as a self taught violinist.
When fitted properly they work very good with no slipping.
Thank you so, so much!! I had completely given up on violin for about a year because of slipping issue! This along with getting them professionally installed are on my Christmas wish list!
@@maestrokimon They never slip which means they're a good upgrade.
what is the ratio?
I believe they are 8:1 and the Knilling perfection planetary pegs are 4:1
Is the winder the same as a guitar winder, or are they different? You can get guitar winders at any music store.
These pegs are thicker that guitar pegs so I'm afraid that they won't fit in a winder for guitars.
No glue at all?
No, I prefer not to glue theme as I want to be able to remove theme if a client wants that without damaging the instrument.
@@maestrokimon I think the client would be happier with these mechanical pegs cause they're easier to turn, plus a string winder helps with restringing.
May I ask are these pegs non slip? Thanks!
Yes, they have same very small bulges that ancore the peg in the hole.
can we use these pegs for oud instrument /
I think that they have special ones for oud, have a look to their website.
@@maestrokimon thanks
Can I ask if is a nice idea to change my ebony wood pegs with tail piece and chin rest to rosewood of other wood (pernambuco) made once for less sweet sound what would you recommend?
Have you seen my video about the tailpiece? There is the answer you are looking for: ua-cam.com/video/KTLMjZ8znbk/v-deo.html
Hi Kimon just a question i already bought one set but in which hole can you set the string ? in double hold or In the other one . Thanks .
You have to use only one hole and can chose any of the two.
Tienes el acento como de vasco hablando inglés.
My accent is Greek!
How do we measure the peg hole
In order to determine the size that you have to order?
maestro-Kimon correct
you will have to use a caliper to measure the old pegs at the ring. not the hole. If you don't have the pegs anymore measure the holes and ad 1mm. If you are not sure buy one size bigger!
maestro-Kimon I’m so sorry. Where is the peg ring?
At the end of the schaft. The thickest part. If you want you can send me an e-mail, I will send you a pic how to measure.
Get a Dremel saves you the hassle of sawing for 30 mins
Sawing for 30 minutes? Where did you see me saw for the long?
I purchased the Killing ones. I prefer their design as it is literally wood. And, as the mechanism is in the shaft and not in the head it also has the same shape as traditional pegs. So, they just fit better to a traditional design. Noone will realise. The missing finetuners are the only hint. Meanwhile the killing ones are available in rosewood too. Now I just need to wait for my violin to be done and set up by my luthier.
Btw: I went for those pegs because I am frustrated about the tuning of the violin. Especially in winter. I am just a beginner and my violin is not an old masters violin where tuning is said to be smooth and easy. With my violin it's pushing squeezing and hoping it's not loose after one second. That said it's been set up by a luthier so he did the best he can do. He told me that it will become better with tuning more often. Basically a lot more often than I do ;) As I am a beginner I prefer to spend the time for practicing instead of tuning. And I don't want to be held off from practising by the thought of having to tune it for 10 minutes.
Thanks!
Hello. Those pegs avoid trouble with tuning, and most important for me, eliminate pain on my fingers ! It change my violin life. Merci beaucoup
Thanks for your video. I want to install these in my violin and would like to know what size you recommend. My peg holes measure 7.5mm to 7.6mm. I looked at the Wittner website, but I’m not sure if the 7.8 or 8.6 pegs would work better. Any recommendations?
I use these Wittner finetune pegs on my violin. They are easier to make tuning adjustments and much better than conventional pegs that have a tendency to stick and slide.
Dear Maestro Luthier, I play the Bass Viol da gamba. Which one Wittner finetune pegs would You reccomend on my instruments - consider the *tuning peg box* is max ca. 58mm wide.
Should I buy WFtunep. for Cello? or perhaps the Viol (da braccio) ones are enough long considering the extra amount lenght which should be sewed for adaptation? If the last case, do they (for viola da braccio) stand bass wire's tension?
And.
Do wittner sell to private people by e-commerce?
Thanks for you explanation.
Hello Alessandro. You can have a look on their website, they have data sheets with all the dimensions of the pegs. If you still have questions you could also e-mail theme. But I think that you have to brig your instrument to a violin maker to place the pegs on your instrument as you need specialized tools and knowledge. see here for the datasheets: wittner-gmbh.de/wittner_finetune_peg_service.html
maestro kimon, whats the right size to buy for a brand new yamaha yev 4 string, cause they come in: 8.6, 7.8 etc. whats the right size for me to buy? please help!
I don't know the diameter of the pegs on the specific instrument, you will have to measure theme close to the ring...
No me he enterao de papa
Sorry?
Hello iam looking in to getting these for my cello I did messure the hole and it was 1cm and pegs were 11.5 cm any suggestions
You have to bring your cello to a violin maker to fit these pegs on your instrument. You need special tools and knowledge to do it.
wonderful
for me the wight is the most important as I feel comfortable during practicing. so the question is do they weight heavier than normal pegs? I think the exact wight should be mentioned because you don't want to add extra wight to your instrument! I know that you don't need fine tuners on the tailpiece anymore and this is an advantage to the wight but you have 4 pegs and if they whited more it will make a difference. please Kimon share your thought regarding the weight!
Unfortunately I don't have new sets of these pegs so I can't tell you the precise weight, but I weighted the pegs that I have on the instrument (already cut on measurement) but they are nearly the same length. Wittner: 10gr, Knilling 8gr, traditional ebony peg: 5gr. Keep in mind that by placing the mechanical pegs you can get rid of the finetuners and their weight. I hope I could help you.
@@maestrokimon thanks for your reply! Well that means more 5 gr difference.
So 5x4 wil be 20 gr heavier.
Even if you get rid of the fine tuners the weight is more. So I believe if it's regarding the weight there is no any advantage correct me if I'm wrong.
in my opinion adding 20gr to the instrument (that is les that 5% of the tota weight) will not change the sound dramatically. Also, don't forget that adding weight isn't necessarily a bad thing. if you think that these pegs will help you tune then I would definitely try them.
@@maestrokimon I'd put these on cheap/school/student instrument. I'd not put them on professional/master level instrument just because they are plastic and I doubt that plastic parts are conducting sound the same way as ebony, rosewood etc.
I think on professional/master level instrument the best option is still one fine tuner integrated in tailpiece for E string.
Maybe I'd change my mind if they somehow are able integrate them into ebony wood but these would be incredibly expensive :)
@@rofo2107 Actually these Geared pegs are plastic and they weigh half as much as wooden pegs so they lower the weight
Pretty nice
Cool :)
Thank you!
