And could you make a video about chin rest? What type (Kaufmann, Flesh... etc) would be good for the sound, what material will give the sound what kind of effect? something like that! Thank you!!!
Hello M Kimon, what would you say are the advantages/drawbacks of synthetic tailpieces? What would you say are the differences between plastic/aluminum/carbon fiber ones? Thank you for a very informative video.
I have an old violin (no label but at least 100 years old, not expensive) with a weird tailpiece... it only has two holes and the strings loop around the wood at the top of each hole. There's one fine tuner that sticks up. Anyone know what kind of tailpiece this could be?
Wow, such a great video. I was looking for information on guitar tailpiece with very little luck. There is plenty on here that will convert over so thank you very much ❤️
If the instrument has been fitted with Wittner geared tuning pegs and has no fine tuners on the tailpiece, would using the heavier, ebony tail be the better way to as far as sound is concerned?
I have difficulty in finding a good tailpiece.... I find Teller boxwood is not made of good quality wood. When buying a tailpiece I often see a choice of size (for violin) let's say a Hill model could be 110mm or 115mm.... why is this ? and how do I determine the best size for my violin.? Thank you maestro, brilliant video
When I was a boy, my cello always did alarming noises because of the nylon loop not withstanding the string pull and thus skipping a thread or two. Had it at the violin maker a few times with no success. Finally mounted a brake wire from my motorcycle that sits in a thin black isolation of a headset wire. Sound and attack changed instantly, I am still happy with the solution 45 years later. Needless to say that it never made these scary noises since that day.
I think that the old loop that you had, that is called "tailgut" was indeed a thick gut string. these tend to brake threat by threat. Today there are nylon, kevlar and (metal) wires that work perfectly. And, as you also mention, they influence the sound and response a lot.
The only standart adjustment that you can try is a wolf killer. Otherwise you can try changing the length and material of the tailgut as the length and material of the tailpiece. It is a bit of a trial and error process.
Thank you for the wonderful video. Can you help me? Teller 15E Adjuster Tailpiece Violin vs. Wittner Ultra Tailpiece Violin 4/4 BK vs. Wittner Tailpiece Violin 4/4. Isn’t it true that plastic sounds less better than ebony? What’s your choice here?
On a cello Kenneth Kuo suggests to tune C string after length to F sharp, pinching the open D sting to get an interval, because D is usually the weakest cello string.
This is indeed a method that I hear a lot. As I say in the video there is no unic "best" solution or advice, it's more a trial and error mater. You could definitely try it.
They make two types of tailpieces: with 4 fine tuners and with none. You could use the one with none and put a separate fine tuner on it. I think that it would work.
Thank you for your video, would like to see a video on how to measure to determine the size of a violin as there are several sizes 4/4, 3/4 and 1/2 size but what are the dimensions and is there classification charts available to determine them and if so where can these charts be obtained?
Greetings, Maestro. I have an old violin (no real value) I would like to work on. The tailpiece, as most, has a small piece of Something (????) inlaid, crosswise, at the string end. Mine has a couple of bits missing. What is it called and can it be replaced, or do I need to replace the tailpiece? Thank you.
@@maestrokimon: Thank you, Maestro. That is strange, with it being an important piece. Keeping the strings from vibrating on the end of the tailpiece. Hello Maestro-Kimon, I have some questions about tailpiece and gut. It seems many expensive cellos have a thinner wire gut than regular or cheaper cello gut. Does thinner gut make a better sound? Can I make a better cello sound by changing the tailpiece and gut?
Hello Katrina, As I say in the video there is no "best material" or "best tailpiece". Every instrument and every players has it's own "best". If you are looking for a new tailpiece and have specific sound desires you will have to try different options keeping in mind the characteristics that I mention in the video. I have never heard about tailpieces from the materials you mention.
Very interesting video, having a violin with some problem notes this video is very helpful, i did not knew the loop is really important in the violin; question, if there is an iron loop on a ebony tailpiece, that does not increase the wolf tone?
Thank you for your kind words. It's difficult to say what the exact result will be on a specific instrument. As I said in the video it's more of an paltry and error method!
I have no experience with them, they do look beautiful thou! But, as I say in the video, it is an trial and error mater, you should try them on your instrument.
Thank you for the info. I have heard of the term wolf tone, but do not know if I would recognize it. do you have a video or info (sound clips) with this sound? thanks
I don't have a video about the wolf tone yet. But if you don't hear anything strange you have no problem. Don't start searching for the wolf because if you find id you wont get rid of it!! (don't search for problems you don't have) greetings!
I‘m using fernanbuco pegs, fernanbuco tailpiece and ebony chin rest on my violin. Do you think it is a bad idea to have different materials? If so, why?
As I say in the video, there are no hard rules here! If you like the sound of your instrument then everything is ok. Feel free to combine materials if you have the feeling that with another setup it sounds better.
Maestro, I am inspired by your mix of methods for building a violin. And look forward to the remainder of your "Making a violin" video series. Two questions please; When you sanded the ribs to achieve the taper from the neck end to the tail end, what are the two dimensions that you wish to achieve? Can you explain the effect this has on the sound produced by the instrument?
I have no experience with the harp model. But still it is a matter of trial and error. I have client that like them, others hate them! If you can afford try it!
Thank you for this video! I have an otherwise well made violin that was damaged with a polyurethane varnish. Is there any tailpiece material or style that could help counterbalance the “tinny” sound caused by the varnish? I’d like more resonance and warmth to the tone. The current tailpiece is ebony. Also, can you tell us about “harp” style tailpieces? Does their shape serve a functional purpose or is it just for visual style? Thank you in advance.
Hello Amanda! As I say in the video there is no consistency in the effect of the material, shape (harp or straight) and position of the tailpiece. Try to decide for yourself what you want to change on the sound of your violin and by following the general instructions I give try (by trial and error) to find the correct tailpiece for you. I wish I could give you more straight forward advice!
Hi maestro kimon, I currently want to change my heavy metal witner tailpiece with a wooden one with two integrated fine tuners. I would like to make the sound on my violin brighter as my violin is quite warm sounding and the g string could open up a little. What tailpiece would you recommend for my needs? Thanks!
Everything affects the sound! If you want a fine tuner only on the E string you could use a tailpiece without and ad a separate one, but if you want 4 fine tuners I would recommend a tailpiece with incorporated fine tuners. Of course the differences are more evident as the quality of the instrument increases.
Hi, my name is Jose. Which tailpiece recommends me, I look for the best and the best material for the best sound. Where can I get it? I’m sorry for my English, I speak little. GRACIAS por su video, very good !
Hello Jose. As I say in the video there isn't one tailpiece that is "the best" for every instrument. You have to find your one "best" tailpiece according to you instrument and the sound you want to achieve. You will have to try different ones as different settings (length if the tail-gut). Sorry I can't give a straight answer.

Those Wittners are amazingly good. Easy to string, easy to tune, and they sound good. I have one on a 20k fiddle, and it doesn't bother me a bit.
