BTW, thank you for reminding their ranks ("Master" and not "Sergeants") because Cédric & Alain as Commandos Marine were sailors, hence "petty officers" and not "NCO's". In the French Navy, Army personnel are called " biffins" ( =rag peddlers) as opposed to the "chic" the Navy is supposed to retain.

GIGN's moto (france's equivalent of SWAT) was "Sauver des vies au mépris de la sienne", which roughly translates to "To save lives without regard to one's own".
But it changed in 2014 to "To enlist for life". I suspect the initial one was deemed too "hardcore"
EDIT : I say hardcore, because in french it sounds hardcore. The translation does not really give a full sense of that. "mépris" actually means "disdain" so a better translation IMO would be "To save lives disdaining your own"

The reason two of the bravest died is because they went to kill the hostage takers with knives. the number of tents and the fact that they had to kill a sentinel prior to engage the people in the tents force them to go in in a very unconventionnal way. I undersand that you dont have all the fact from the mission you are talking about, but I thought it would be important to correct what you said. Thanks for bringing this incredible mission to public awareness. A lot of people in the English speaking world don't know anything beyond the mystique of British SAS and US Seals/SF. They don't even know that there was a French SAS in WWII and that they were SO good, they had a British SAS officer in awe (Major Roy Farran).
Making a hostage rescue on tents in the open is MORE dangerous than any building. No cover from fire; if any, ineffective sniper cover; can't use grenades; flashbangs use is risky; you can't breach quickly with frame charges or rams, and; you have to be feet away to OPEN/slice the tent flap before having a chance of seeing the baddies to slot them. So ridiculously close it's almost a toss-up between using a rifle/pistol or an Opinel No7...
All the gunmen have to do is "spray and pray" in a 360 degree arc and killing the hostages would have been child's play. These French soldiers - what's their next trick, walking on water?! :-)
The only surprise is that only two men paid with their lives to make this rescue happen. These are REAL men. I am glad that France recognises them. It's a pity that the other men of this incredibly courageous mission have to remain UNrecognised.
