I’ve been watching your video since I was in elementary school you technically taught me how to draw in this year I’m graduating out of high school and I’m going to a art college
Ive been watching this guy since elementary too :P
Same
I had no idea that putting words in separate speech bubbles meant a brief pause. The more you know
Another rule I'd add I've learned on lettering, this very has to be your mantra when doing these is "consistency".
17:10 Sending the speech bubble behind the artwork is actually genius. Pretty certain I never saw that before. It's like "breaking the 4th wall" in theatre/film.
Dang tysm this was one thing i really wanted but thank you so much for making this video and keep up the great work and have a great day :D
I’ve seen some people actually overlap the interruption bubble over the words being interrupted. It really sells the idea that they couldn’t even finish their thought.
It's amazing how much time I would've saved myself if I could've watched something like this when I was starting out as a comic artist. There are so many examples in my older works of badly laid out panels and speech bubbles. In particular, I used to use a cop out where I had the reader go from top to bottom in each panel just so I wouldn't have to worry about which side of the panel the characters were on. Looking back, I can't believe how uneducated I was. XD
Over time though, I eventually worked these things out by studying other artists. Like you, for example. =)
don't be too hard on yourself. everything in life has a learning curve.
I haven't watched you in 2 years, but the minute I started my comic book you were the first thing that came to me.
After all these years I'm so happy to learn from you.
thank you for posting this! this is something i struggle with a lot when making comics, and your insight is much appreciated.
Love your videos! Thank you for this
Fantastic video Mark! Thank you💕
That over the shoulder trick just helped me figure out a page I was struggling to arrange the panels for! Thank you so much!
Mark, TY! this is great! I wait for your videos every week, you inspired me to get into manga in the first place :)
Mark Crilley, thank you for this information. This is Very helpful.
Thank you so much Mr Crilley! Your advice is always a gamechanger
Thank you Mr Crilley. I've been watching your videos for a very long time, they've inspired me a lot and now I'm working on my own comic book series. I cannot tell you how grateful I am.
Congratulations on 3 million subscribers Mark.
Thanks mark really helpful 😀
Great tips! Thanks.
I found another comic book guide that discuss about this subject, thank you for updating. 😁👍
EYYYYYY MARK CRILLEY GOT A NEW VIDEO OUT HECK YEAAAA!!!
I actually remember finding Brody's Ghost in my high school library.
iv just started watching your content. very good. very helpful.
exceptional upload markcrilley. I crushed the thumbs up on your video. Always keep up the awesome work.
Hey mark! I first stumbled upon one of your videos and you were my first inspirations to take up drawing. This may not seem much to you but it does to me. Thank you for being an inspiration! Glad you're still active.
This is such a relevant video for me right now as I'm about to finish drawing the first chapter of my first proper comic book!
I solve planning for the speech bubbles by simply them being the very first thing I draw in a sketch. They don't even need to be filled with the actual phrase, just being there and being the roughly correct size helps.
GREAT TIPPS AND HINTS!! WILL HELP FOR SURE IN THE FUTURE!😁
I´m so hyped for this commic lesson book!!!! And I love your videos about commics. It´s realy fun to watch them^^
Mark Crilley is the best youtube artist. With heaps of experience and quality artworks that are so varied. It shows but experience is not everything. The total comitment and dedication to improve every years is what make great artist.
Thanks for such a great video Mark. Coincidentally on two counts this helps me as I’m finishing up my first chapter of my first manga and speech bubbles are proving, a challenge! So thanks for the lovely advice and two, I was in Morioka yesterday to get my driving license. I live in ‘nearby’ Miyako. Small world :) thanks again!
Write the words first and then the speechbubble- tip that helped me the most 🙃
So awesome sir.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
15:58 - "There's thinking, I don't really do that so much these days"
🤪
It's evident you've put in much thought into your craft. Thanks for the video!
snorky is adorable!

This is great 👍
I really need this tutorial.
This may have been helpful, informative and useful video
Thanks
Super helpful. I was wondering about the grammar in comics and how different it might be to the writting of a novel. I am converting my novels into grauphic novels myself.
BRODDDDDDYYYY!!!
Oh, Hi Mark!
I always love your videos Mark, it's really easy to appreciate your skill as a graphic novellist when you take us through the various aspects and the thought processes behind them.
I think you're being a bit hard on yourself with that last point though, about the speech bubble going behind Gax... I can't imagine it going in front of his neck, without it interrupting the effect of him looking over the other guy's shoulder. I wonder what you think a good alternative would have been, if you'd thought of it at the time?
Mark you have indeed "fixed" speech bubbles. I really need all comic book creators to follow these tips EXACTLY as stated. Lol
Here's a tip I use for creating the outline around a narration box/word balloon (in Photoshop). Make the box as usual on a separate layer: then click 'Edit' and select 'Stroke' in the drop down menu: this will immediately create the outline around the entire box: you can also choose which colour and thickness you want the outline to be. It's worked well for me so I thought I'd share it.
wow markcrilley
I did do #7 in a very interesting way: not only is the speech bubble was interrupted but I choose to break up the panel with an opmodia with an experience that actually happened. It helps to draw a rough comic before making a finished one.
This was very good with wonderful examples.
Do you draw your illustrated novels digitally as well as the dialog bubbles?
Could you do an old art vs new art video. That would be awesome
By the way everyone, Brody's Ghost takes place between 2055-2056.
There is a scene in book 5 where Brody visits Talia's grave, with the headstone reading 2035-2050. Brody's Ghost is set five years after Talia is murdered, which means that it takes place 5 years after 2050.
I was just reading it for the first time and noticed. It's a great book!
Also, her last name is Richardson.
Hey Mark! How about another Q and A video? I'm sure we'd love to catch up with you.
number 6 is just like ghost busters never cross the sreams!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
16:26 Number 10 is like 3D in a movie. It can enhance the experience but if it's too obnoxious, it's very distracting and annoying.
I've read Manga where I be confused on what to read next because sometimes its right to left and sometimes its going down
Have any of these been offered to be made into a movie or tv show? Cause I'd watch them.
mark I been watching your videos an I'm interested in animles
drawing can you do one on your to draw a realistic cougar
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
This video isn't for this topic but i would like a video explaining whats going wrong when drawing a anime or manga face looking just straight outward from the page or just any direction like maybe you could use some bad or like improper drawings to explain why the face looks off despite using the guidelines why the the face doesn't seem to pop out like your faces cause thats my problem i do use guide lines but every face i draw feels flat even with like nice looking eyes and hair the face just doesn't feel right no matter what i do. Though i have some exceptions which are decent most of them feel off like i don't know exactly what im doing wrong
Is there a certain font size that she should have for speech bubbles
How do you break lines? E.g. you have a long sentence, your speech bubble has enough space for three lines. Where do you break/press the enter key?
Hi ^^ you wouldn't happen to use a free software to add those digital speech bubbles you mention? Been looking for one but apart from those to put ugly bubbles on pictures...
Could u draw a yorkie!🥰
FYI, there were about 5-6 ad interruptions when I watched this. If that’s intentional, that’s fine, but I know UA-cam changed their default ad settings a while back to fit as many ads in a video as possible, and some other creators have mentioned not realizing that. If you’ve noticed people dropping off videos more than before, that may be why.
Thanks for all you do!
Mark crilley, Have you ever thought of reacting to a comic with your Preferences before?
Hi, I have one question, can I learn to draw even if I don't have talent?
I have a question, when you draw do you have any tips to not over shade a drawing. I'm making a comic and my drawings are ways too dark and shaded.
is your books avalible in asia
Plz can you draw george the gorilla from rampage

Good afternoon, I beg you to draw a character from the anime "Arifureta the strongest artisan in the world" Hazume Nagumo.
اهاااااااتااا
@ 8:10 that is the worst drawing I’ve seen him do and it’s a reference sketchbook to teach a tip. That’s one out of thousands that I like from him. Even his high school drawings (and younger) are impressive in some way.
