Started laughing when Mr.O walked away to grab a hammer, and the tierod fell right out of the knuckle.
They've heard about Eric's prodigious hammering on car parts and thought----just give up NOW.
I almost fell off my chair laughing when I saw that. That’s great video timing👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That also goes to demonstrate the issue aluminum knuckles have as far as the tie rod taper seating into the aluminum. That is my understanding that its common for the taper stud to loosen up due to how soft aluminum is and that they should be rechecked once in a while to make sure they are torqued up. Eric probably has some feedback on the whole issue since some vehicles have gone to aluminum knuckles.
I never get that lucky
lol, I don't think I've even had that luxury before.
I have done hundreds of brake jobs so why am I watching? Because Mr. O is so entertaining!!
Eric is by far the best entertainment on YT. His mix of dry humor, cynicism and knowledge is great.
At this point I don't think NAPA can take a hint.
No grease, I'm thinking the engineers are looking to help the dealers out with more frequent brake jobs, got a love the thought process.
I just wanna say Eric, I'm sure most of your subscribers will agree, we don't necessarily watch your videos to learn how, we watch because your content is interesting. Do we learn? Yes. Kids love sesame Street, and don't think about what they are learning, the content is just interesting, and entertaining. That being said, we don't care if you have done a video on it before, we still wanna see, because entertainment. You're a funny guy Eric!
yes, entertaining!
Your awesome. Drove by the shop earlier. I was passing by the area and always wanted to see it so I drove by and saw you parking a white car on the street. Me and the wife waved from a black minivan passing by lol. Kinda surreal seeing you and the shop in person. Didn’t want to stop and bother you so just passed by.
I waved and winked at your wife😉 Right after you turned around in the Legion parking lot. I see everything around here....👀
@@SouthMainAuto that’s awesome lol I’ve been a big fan for years
@@SouthMainAuto Which eye did you wink her with? 😂
*You're
hey.. it's that guy
I could watch an SMA brake video every day. With Eric O's wonderful commentary, they are always a joy to watch. I like these so much better than the "teaching" videos.
A three year old car that needs a tie rod? Stelantis quality strikes again!
Mopar mo'problems
Mine went at 14 years and I dumped it as I didn't think it was worth spending $2500 fixing and another $1500 for new tires. Parts for the 05-07 GC are impossible to get. Mercedes sent spares for scrap after 10 years. My alternator was 1 of 3 left on the planet. It came from the USA, 2 were in Germany and it cost $1300 for a new factory Mercedes part. The Jeep was the most expensive car I've owned.
It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand
I just had this same curiosity. I guess being replaced so soon it just slid out so easily, at least.
Beat me to it, these vehicles age in dog years
Back to the basics with the brake video. Glad to see Luna still out and about.
"Notorious PIG" omigosh I LOL'd at that one. Thanks as always, Eric.
No grease, thinking the engineers are looking at helping the dealerships out with more frequent brake jobs and noise complaints. Gotta love the thought process 😂
It's a great video. Life is a pain when you do this over and over. You are the best. Thank you for the wisdom. I live in Florida, my little pickup is a 1985 Datsun Nissan. I've been driving this thing 22 years. I only paid 1k dollars for it.I like to brag because most people with new cars don't have them that long. No, I don't have a life. Everybody else in the neighborhood got a new car. Being old and close to death, it really doesn't matter. That is heaven, cars that don't rust.
Remember guys, if Eric can do it, so can you - it will just take three times as long, involving scraped knuckles and multiple four letter words
And maybe a RE-do it 🤔.
I've been doing this same job for about the past 30years, and generally a day doesn't go by without the scraped knuckles and "colorful metaphors"....
And will cost you $$$$$$ for all the tools you "don't" have.
Dang, darn, and shüt?
My swollen nuts are no longer a problem thanks to you Eric!
Ummmm....sounds a little weird and "geh"🤔😬
Mr. O's commentary is what drew me to his channel and keeps me. ❤❤
Mr. O., setting off Internet OCD since 2015! 🤣
Can't wait for the folks who have never worked on a car in their lives to have a conniption fit over the brake grease application. I can't count the amount of times I have seen service info say "NEVER GREASE THE SLIDE PINS" and they inevitably come in squealing like a pig, with one pad worn clean down to the metal and the other at 5mm, even outside of the rust belt. Another great video Mr. O!
If that happens there is another reason and greasing the pins won't fix it. The pins are stainless so makes no odds if "rustbelt" or not. Can be seizing piston, rust between the bracket and the guide bush squeezing the bush onto the pin, or the pins weren't cleaned in 5 years.
Thats because of dust which will be rust an dust without 😅
@@jabberwockytdi8901stainless steel ain't stainless in The R belt
@@jabberwockytdi8901 What kind of stainless? Because 304 isn't going to hold up to salt.
@@jabberwockytdi8901SS galls so grease would reduce that friction.
Thanks for upload you you and family had a good 4th just got home from vacation and gonna chill and watch a SMA vid
Always a treat to see the streets of Avoca Mr. O. Thanks for the tour! As an employee of the USPS, I always get a kick out of seeing the ol' PO across the street.
Entertainment with a brake job for Sunday. Thanks
I really can't believe you're not at 1 million subs yet, I think your channel is one of the most informative channels for most vehicle repairs because for most of us that work on vehicles aren't as lucky as Ray where just looking at a part that you need to remove and it falls off, you show us how you remove parts in the worst case scenario.
I like when you go to the pick a part, you didn't go this time but I like watching the times you do.
My dogs wake up when they hear the cat. So cute.🥰
Talk about a spoiled cat !
Thanks for refreshing my memory for brake jobs. I haven’t done one in a short minute but I know it’s not gonna be long til one of my 5 vehicles needs brakes. Luckily, I don’t have to deal with rust/corrosion like you do….
Slide grease is a wonderful thing being a rust belt mechanic like you
Must have watched you do 100 of these..basically in your sleep.
I think that in itself is testament to your warning about buying new cars in the north east salt belt.
I don't know how mechanics make a living in the rest of the country.
I just did the brakes for the first time on my 2013 Taco. The pads were almost gone but the rotors were just fine. At 115k miles.
....and you make sure kitty is safe in the office before you back out of the garage!
Good job dude.
"The mere threat of just whackin' it. . . " Spoken by the original tie rod whisperer.
Wow, a late model Jeep that still has wheel mounting studs instead of those dopey bolts.
Makes mounting the wheel so much easier when you don't have a stud to hang it on!
Glad to see a quality brake job again
Ahhhhhh.... a 'classic' SMA brake job. Thanks for posting!!!
Sorry I fell asleep in the middle of your show. But as any good viewer would do I watched it again Yay?
Mr Eric, thank you for all the great videos
Eric, your narration is second to NONE! Thanks, Learning everyday is now entertaining.
My son bought me one of your shirts for my birthdy.
Another brake video master piece, I was looking forward to the alignment, so satisfying seeing the lights go green, another day maybe.
Helicoiled a lot of them too. We still have them on the road down here in the south. Thanks Eric!
Classic SMA break job video with a bonus Luna sighting!!!
Nothing like changing a water pump and radiator ...getting done and finding another SMA video to watch!!
Oh yeah!!! 2 new videos in one day!!!👍
Gotta love the quiet surroundings there at SMA.
Now now, I did that method on my 07 vette, the toe was 1/16 off, all I wanted was to be able to drive it to the shop but it actually worked really well.
Oh my Gawd! everyone knows you have to have the cotter pin sideways and wrap around the bolt and tie it in the back!
I like the test drive music, it's laid back and easy going.
I can picture laid back Mr. O just strumming away.
Thanks for the video Eric.
Finally a video I can watch without having to think.
Great brake job! I do enjoy watching then each time. Thanks
Another job well done with a sense of humor Mr. O.
Nice to see not much has changed in the last couple decades.
Keep up the good work
Aric you’re the only person that makes a brake job sound like fun great job man what ever floats your boat man good job I would let you do my brakes any time
Awesome video
Can always count on an SMA video to deliver 💪
You were "on fire" today!--- NICE job!
Cool video thanks for sharing!
oh the classics, huge fan, but I'm a fan of all your content. Awesome video as always.
Thanks for the nice Jeep job video!
The nylon brush on the drill for the slider holes, and the 'Around the World' on the hub... Great! This reminds me never to get any vehicle that doesn't have painted rotors :)
This? A delightful adventure in automotive repair and excellence... Thanks Eric O. On the test drive I noticed no fencing? Strange.
The sheep wool sound affect will never get old. Thanks doc.
Thank you, SMA. I love going back to the roots. Not matter the job. Especially teaching us things like swelling lug nuts and different tools.
Good Work!
I've virtually ridden along on enough test drives that I think I could navigate around Avoca like I've lived there for a while.
Another fun video.
That Jeep is 3 years old with 52,000 miles and it already needs brakes and suspension parts? I forgot how you drive us around town to do a burnish break-in, Eric. GREAT VIDEO!
I saw a mechanic leave the piston pusher thingy dangling one day when he took lunch break. But he came back a few minutes later and grabbed his super biggie size drink off the toolbox and then went to lunch. So it was all good.
Nice little shuffle.
Back in the day, Chrysler had left handed threads on the driver's side lug nuts.
Yep! As a 16 yr olds kid working on my 68 New Yorker, They sure tightened that side down!
Love me a S M A brake job..Chatter is wonderful
All of that and a French lesson to boot!! Well done!!
Hey Eric, love your channel. GM WCT here. Just a heads up, regarding your comment that pushing the piston in cannot damage the EBCM. Please review PIT5953 dated 10-05-2022. Pushing the pistons in with the M/C more than 1/2 full and the cap on the M/C can indeed damage the pressure sensor in the EBCM which will then require replacement of the unit. This will typically occur when doing a rear brake job on a 2018-2023 Equinox or Terrain. What typically happens is that when the scan tool is used to retract the pistons they do not retract completely due to the fluid level in the M/C being too high, the tech then pushes the pistons in manually, creating an overpressure condition and damaging the sensor.
You will then find that you cannot do a parking brake relearn and a C0561 43 set in the EBCM. Now you are buying an EBCM for your customer. So on these vehicles, ALWAYS take the cap off the M/C before you retract the pistons.
BTW, did you get the corrective safety glasses I sent you? Your eyes are getting old just like mine (mine are older than yours,) I love these things. I wear the +1.5 almost all the time and use the +2.5 when I am doing very close work. Say hi to Mrs. O for me, you are a lucky man. Have a great day! -Mike
what dummy isn't bright enough to check the MC resorvoir and remove some, before making a mess, blowing it out all over the place or wrecking something.
must be the wet behind the ears fellas with their shiny new certs and almost zero hands on time. 🤔
also, who designed that trash that can not vent when that happens?
Great music choice!!
Love when you listen, then talk to your cat. They always have something to say, but most people don't take the time to learn to speak CAT. One of my cats doesn't talk much at all, and will sit by the water bowl and stare at me. This means there is dust on top of the water. She lays on my hand while I sleep, and will talk if she wants out of my room.
Eric, people in the Rust Belt buy brand-new cars because the used cars there are rusty shells!!!
And, Luna makes my day.
i tip i learned from a heins manual one time for tie rod end is to use a paint marker to mark the end of the tie rod where it sits before removing the end
Never seen anyone do such a thorough brake job.
That was my exact thoughts, every possible detail covered to ensure it will work as long as its able to before its a pile of rust again and also that the rotor will come off with a minimal struggle next go around.
This wasn't thorough it was basic. Anything less is a pad slap.
@@truracer20 Yeah, ok. 🤦🏽
@@truracer20 Basic but done right and attention to detail, it seems when I do a brake job on some vehicles ( have salt and the killer calcium chloride in Alberta in the area where I am ) I end up putting on reman calipers as they end up being junk as well more often than not.
I had to rewatch that part of the stud just falling out of the knuckle like 100 times. I said to myself "is that physically possible?!?!?!" Good old rust belt..
I believe that is due to the idea of using aluminum for a knuckle, there is a lot of stress at the tie rod end and from what I hear tie rods are far more prone to loosening up in an aluminum knuckle and if not caught in time it will wallow out the taper hole and then its junk and have to have the knuckle changed. All in the name of lightening up the vehicle a bit, there is a negative side.
probably a factory issue, wasn't torqued correctly to start or they have some bad metal doing something funky, could also explain the accelerated wearing out.
something sure is fishy there! I wonder if any have eaten the knuckle or sheared off while driving, maybe a near future recall, wrecks and lawsuit on coming.
@@throttlebottle5906 I never saved the info I had come across as per those aluminum knuckle issues of loosening up because of the stress the tapered hole in the aluminum was not able to withstand over its steel or cast counterpart knuckle. Off road you see is where the stresses go up, adding larger tires puts more stress on all components. I have seen video of more than one instance of the aluminum knuckle sustaining a catastrophic failure but this again was off road and being beat on with stress typically not seen on road. Take the Wranglers for example, they use the aluminum knuckle up to the standard Rubicon but with the optional package that includes larger tires yet they then swap to a stronger axle housing and yup, cast knuckles for that setup.
Lol, with the oddball Chysler stuff. I had a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, I had to buy a set of Torx sockets to do that. Glad I have them now but there was definitely a long time that I never used them
I've never had a tie rod fall out of a knuckle. That was funny!! Thank you Mr O!!
Scared it out 😂
Eric has finally solved a mystery that has plagued me for years. A friend had a 4 door Jeep Wrangler. If the Jeep sat for a week or more, the brakes would intermittently drag. He would send the Jeep to the dealer and they would replace all the calipers, pads and rotors. Not recommending the use of lube on the slide pins or any other contact points would surely cause this condition to happen. The dealer never could solve the "death wobble" issue either. I never was a fan of Chrysler products. After my friend passed away his wife sold the Jeep to get it out of the yard.
My dodge lugs bolts swelled up too out here in Commiefornia. Ended up just replacing them all with lug bolts without the chrome caps.
We have salt year around here too, in the for of rain which is fed by the Gulf of Mexico. Pensacola
the break Caliber tools very nice
Funniest one yet ! And I was wondering if you were going to do the other side, great job with this one
roots are the basis of all good support.
I have been followed you since a couple of months, and I like your videos and engagemang when repair your customers cars.
A lot of knowledge and humor blended in these videos, I like it 🙂
Please, could you show your cat a little more in the videos, both me and my wife always look for the cat and please give him/her a big hug from us !
Take care and have a good day sire !
97 Jeep Grand Cherokee love my car counted the rotations on the tie rod and use that method because I figured I would want to get new tires anyway.
But, it's working fine. No extra wear.
No Diagnostics today 🧐,
but still worth watching,thx Mr O 👍🏻
I'v still got a bunch of those 9, & 11 MM heli coils in my tool box from them caliper strip outs....
Another example of a repair including quality entertainment . NAPA parts rarely have the same fastener size as OE for some reason or another .
I just replaced all four brakes and rotors on a friends 2015 accord, then rear brakes and rotors on another friend's Odyssey the following weekend, then my wife called me today and said back brakes were making a roaring sound. Sure enough, my 2009 Odyssey rear brakes bad, slider pins all rusted, stuck out and boots popped out of caliber brackets. Fixed them tonight. Safe to say, I've had my fill of DIY brake jobs over the last few weeks. But I still love watching you do them. :)
Who replaced your period with a comma?
@Failure_Is_An_Option you been appointed grammar checker youtube king eh? Good for you.
The Dog made an appearance. My favorite appearance.
Only 103K to 1M. Thanks for an informational video and entertaining.
Ohhh, give me a break...job! The "toot around town" is always appreciated!
See you are having same hot dry weather we are. No lawn mowing.
"I dont have a pass or I'd say some lyrics for you" LOL
Aye vey! My 2006 honda with 215k still has original tie rods with perfect tire wear and zero shimmy
personally I'm ready for the comfortable days of Autumn and Sundays watching football.
I would like to think any garage would do a complete and professional brake job just like this. But I know otherwise.
Good job!
Good Job
Have you gotten any ice cream at the ice cream shop lately? Haven't heard you say anything about them for a while now. Keep up the great work! Love the videos!
I believe the rubber O-rings are for assembly purposes at the factory similar to GM’s metal lock washer.
Another day, Another Chevy project on the sma!
Im a ford fan, have to point out ford loves those pesky torx heads in some spots too. Yes grease your moving parts. That tie rod being toast at 3 years old is crazy to me
In regards to weird stuff.. I have a 3/8" drive 11point socket for peterbuilt disc brakes I have used once..
