  • In this video we do the required maintenance for a voltage regulator replacement by Flight Systems www.flightsyst...
Everything seems to check out, but it's still acting up a bit, what are your thoughts?

Thanks your video and Flight Systems Inc manauls. My meter was reading 1.0 V(ac) so I improvised on your hack with readily available materiels and reading 121 V(ac) full load. 92-Bounder, Onan NHM700,

If you shut them off under load it can demagnize your stator magnets and will take a while to excite them back.

This is really helpful. I have one of these but have not fired it up for about two years. I'm going to give it a try in the next week or so.

Kevin Hornbuckle yeah, get a small stick of plastic (I cut mine one my table saw) and used superglue to put some sandpaper on it. Worked great to keep the slip rings clean. Watch the regulator, don’t let it get hot.

found this on a forum that may shed some light on it, "Should start gen once a month. I let my gen sit for 3 months , but I clean slip rings before every use. In tests I found rotor resistance thru slip rings increases to 70-100 after 3-5 months of sitting, should be 25, Onan says clean at 30."

Bubble Guts Mike I did not clean the slips rings well This spring. I’ll need to get some finer sand paper on my DIY slick stick and use it every outing.

@@HimmelbergerBus should not have to clean the slip rings every outing, if they look like they are in bad shape then do it

Thanks again for another great video! Have the exact same Marquis 7000 genset in my 1994 Pace Arrow. Flight systems is phenomenal!it It appears you've got some of the troubleshooting guide from the website. I was able to pull about 30 pages and there was a section, if I recall, troubleshooting a voltage regulator. Not sure if that'll help but hope it does! Stay safe. Take care.

Only low dc voltage passes through the regulator. The output AC voltage is determined by how much dc volts is sent to the exciter no permanent magnets. The voltage regulator senses the AC output voltage and increases or decreases the dc voltage to the exciter windings to maintain the correct ac power output. The heat your feeling in the voltage regulator, I would consider normal.
The salty air definitely corrodes the slip rings so that’s why it’s critical to run the generator under load for 2-3 hours every month. The heat generated by the motor helps drive out moisture and the moving parts in the engine get lubricated. Salt will get concentrated in the engine oil so more frequent oil changes are required to prevent engine damage.
Salt will crystallize inside the generator so running it helps to remove or reduce those crystals.

Ask SmallEngineMechanicMike, he works on generators for a living and has worked on the Onans too. He has a lot of videos on his channel and 805RoadKing

    What is that monitor panel?

It’s a raspberry Pi running Venus OS, similar to a Victron CCGX.
