Appreciate you making this! Lots of videos about gain staging, but not too many that go into detail about how to apply it to transient rich sources like drums. Cheers! 🤟
You've got some of the best mixing content around. Underrated 👍
Thanks!
Drum bus I usually aim for average level around -24db with peaks about -12 or -10db. Since I started doing that my mixes improved.
Always excellent content and information. Thank you Joe!
Great tip!
best video ever. thanks!
you could also use a clipper to shave the transients whilst maintaining that -18dbfs average
Nice job 👍
Thanks dave
Great video! Question: After the gain staging, all peaks are at -6dBFS, and for drums, which track you will set as reference for others to do your rough mix (fader mix)? Kick or snare? Thanks!
I use kick.
How do you enable those white lines on the channel meters?
Great info. What about the hi hats when I gain stage them to -18 or -6 on the channel meter they are way to loud. Thanks
Bring them down with the fader after that.
in order to be able to hit the "sweet" spot of certain analog-modeled plugins the signal is supposed to be entering the plugin at around 0dbvu for the majority of them (depends on manufacturer etc) so my question is, should we aim to peak percussive elements at the equivalent in dbfs (-18dbfs) since the vu meter is too slow to catch those transients/peaks? (I'm referring to hitting that sweet spot of the emulations.) or am I missing something? cheers!
My snare isnt going over -6 on the fader and it still peaks the master, -12 still peaks, i have to pull it down to -24 so it doesnt peak Then when i turn the rest of the mix the snare starts peaking the master again even at -24 Whats that about?
What if you are using a VU meter on drums. I read that you should be around - 5db.
A VU meter generally doesn't have a fast enough response to measure level on transient-heavy sources like drums.
@@andicxzy VU meters is more focused on the average level of the signal vs the peak thus its more reactive to sources with bass content since bass has a lot of energy
