      @@FishingLongIsland Thank you for your response. I would very much appreciate it if you could thank the young lad for a good presentation. I am about to use that knit he demonstrated very shortly to tie my 50 lb Filler to my 50 lb braid. I wish you chaps were here in Australia as the number of fishing tackle shops are limited. Cheers mates!

    By far the best way to spool a spinning reel with no twist, have the tackle shop do it! So satisfying to cast straight line.

      @Fishing Long Island I've never been a pro but there was a time that my buddy and me were on the river 2 or 3 days a week. Before daylight till after dark. I tried every way under the sun to get line on my reels with minimum twist and it just didn't work. THEN, I discovered that bait and tackle shops would spool line for a minimal charge and gave it a try. What a discovery!
      So, I bought extra spools for all my reels and would drop a set off when I picked a set up. It was worth every penny.
      Sure, you can get some twist just through use but to start off with flat, straight line was a game changer!

    Excellent video. Question though. I have a penn Senator 6/0 reel. It holds 925yds of 100lb braid. I would like to spool it with 500yds of 100lb braid. Any idea how much 100lb mono backing I should spool onto the reel so that after adding the braid it will just fill the spool? I know there is a very cumbersome way of doing it to figure it out, just hoping you'd have a shorter method. Thank you in advance.

    • @FishingLongIsland

      I really don’t. You can always put braid on then see what’s left to fill mono the reel. The do opisiite fill

    why 10 to 15 feet of mono as the lead? will that not contradict the use of the braided line since 10 feet of mono will still have some stretching and kill the sensitivity of the braided line?

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  3 роки тому +1

      ROBERT TREVINO no it does not at all. You actually want some leader for a little bit of stretch. You can pull the hooks out easier when battling Fish with no stretch. Also working around structure the mono floral carbon is a little more forgiving than going straight braid. I always have 15 foot top shots on my reels when wreck fishing.

    Can I do this for an ultralight set up? Would it affect my distance when casting since it’s not all braided line?

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  7 місяців тому

      It just helps fill the Reel, so the braid gets closer to the top without doing a total braid fill, which would be very very expensive

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  10 днів тому

      If it’s an ultralight with a small Reel , I would just go with a straight braid fill. I would put a small amount of hockey tape on the Reel spool just to make sure the line stays in place. Then use all Albright knots for the connections.

  • @roberttrevino8052
    @roberttrevino8052 3 роки тому +1

    Second question, why was the braided line not filled to the very end to minimize the friction from the edge of the spool when casting? seems that friction will affect the casting distance although minimally but not sure

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  3 роки тому +2

      ROBERT TREVINO you never want to overfill. Can cause more wind knots. Also always manually close the bail to help that to.

    • @a.p.mexico1071
      @a.p.mexico1071 2 роки тому

      The most appropriate answer will be: To give space to a top shot line. There are preferences in monofilament or fluorocarbon and of course in length, that space in the spool can be filled with a top shot. I'm not talking about the leaders, that usually take a few yards, shorts or longs with knots or swivels but that is other history, depending of the type of fishing, surf casting, pier, lures, live bait, jetty, bottom from boat, etc.

    I use thinner diameter mono, maybe 10-12 pound test... the big mono makes valleys for the braid and can be uneven, will never fight a fish on the backing, it’s just to hold the line or save some money by not spoiling all braid which is expensive. If you have a 4000 or 5000 reel it will hold >300 yards of 20 lb braid which is plenty for onshore fishing. Very good video tho - nice explanation.

    • @FishingLongIsland

      juncags1 You can go straight braid but it’s gonna cost you an arm and a leg. You fill half with mono and you save a lot of money plus you could still have 300 yards of braid on top of the mono

    Just went to sportsman’s and had them spool my reel. This dude spooled it extremely loose and I’m pissed. So my guess is, just cast it out as far as I can and try to reel it in with a bunch of pressure on the line by hand ? I’ll try tomorrow

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  4 роки тому +1

      You can run the line behind a boat. Make sure nothing on line. The pressure from the boat will be fine. Let it out go like 8-10 mph n reel in. It will be perfect

    Why do you put the mono on first?

    • @FishingLongIsland
      @FishingLongIsland  4 роки тому +1

      Cody Smithson Johnston couple reasons. Braid is very thin so that Reel would hold like 1000 yards which in return would be very expensive. So you do a mono backing and fill the reel halfway and then put the rest with the braid. If you were tuna fishing you would go straight braid but for a Surf Fishing. reel, mono backing is the way to go.

      @@FishingLongIsland Hello :) The good thing about the arbor knot is that it cinches on itself. So the knot is very tight against the spool and won't slip. You can use this knot for so many things, Like to start the line to a spool, to attach a sleeping bag, etc, etc... You can even restrain a very annoying customer on your boat with that knot ;) It's a very easy knot and very useful :) The arbor knot is also called the Canadian Jam knot.
