  • Fresh off of a day trip to Youngstown and making the video and it just has me thinking a lot of the place and area I live and the way it has changed or hasn't in my lifetime. I love living and cycling here - people are real, proud and tough but not pretentious. That midwest, Great Lakes, post-industrial, rust belt vibe or whatever you want to call it has translated into the way we ride....

I was training under Shimano squad during mid-70’s, those thin skinny tubeless was the way to go then. I hated it so much because it’s like 50% cycling n 50% patching tires whenever we go on fun ride. When MTB came around I praise the bullet proof knobby tires and cyclists switched to MTB. The MTB trend finally dies off for roadies and using the knobbies on our old school single speed for daily rides are way to go. I believe we’re human think alike and there will be some crazy cyclists in some corner of the world started using knobby tires on single speed. For sure the bicycle manufacturers will also come up with such concept. For that said, I belief it’s the cyclists who started the MTB single speed. Many years forward, during Covid I started the same modification again on my old MTB frame to fit the now much fatter tires. With parts not easily available during Covid pandemic, this time round I get my metal saw out on the aluminum frame. Now there’re so many conversion parts available and too bad I wish I didn’t start the trend too ahead =(

Hmm. Didn't get a notification for this one. Time to play catch while I check my settings.

The Steel Wheels,a bluegrass band from Va.used to tour on bikes with Xtracycle cargo attachments so they could carry their instruments & cycle to gigs,& camp enroute, really cool!!

I did. Back in the 80's in a race when my derailleur got chewed up in the spokes. Took it off, went for a middle to low gear with my chain breaker, ( I carried everything) and got on with it ✊

Had to go back and listen to this one for the Duzer bit. Hilarious. I think I might have just ordered the last red t-shirt? I tried to grab 2 but it wouldn't let me, so I assume it's sold out.

I enjoyed this stream live but to answer the question, and not sure a final answer was given, but in general, I'd say the BMX Cruiser Class was the start of single-speed mountain bikes. BMX was 20" bikes, of course, but it got stuck at that size as the first-gen riders grew out of their Sting-Rays and BMX bikes and 26" tried to answer that and did in a sense with some excellent 26" production single-speed BMX bikes by the likes of Mongoose. Mine in '82 was a new lease on off-road riding with its low-rise BMX bars and rim brakes and perfect frame size and geometry, I could wheelie it for days. 😀
