After just watching this and your prior honeysuckle ‘radical’ cutback vid, I subscribed! Here in Eastern Massachusetts, many of us have similar gardens to yours, and have had similar experiences. I bought my ‘small’ honeysuckle from my local nursery about 4 years ago. It wasn’t expensive (as plants go). Once home, I researched what the plant liked (sunwise, waterwise, fertilizing, etc.). I set the nursery pot into a larger decorative pot, positioned it in front of my south-facing trellis, and watched as it absolutely took off! In the years since, I’ve watered it (containers need more water than in-ground plants), fertilized every month or so during the growing season with different NPK formulations and Miracle Gro singles (depending on what I wanted to bring out), treated for aphids at first with ladybugs (they all flew away) then with Neem oil then switched to Captain Jack’s Deadbug once I learned how bad Neem oil was, and once did a radical cutback, with amazing next-season results. Given the plant is inextricably wound into the trellis, I’ve kept it outside, even through our harsh and snow-filled winters. I do wrap the pot with insulation, but only to shield it from the shock of winter winds. I’ve never covered the above-soil plant. Being end-of-September, I’ll be doing another severe cutback, knowing it will rebound and be glorious next spring!

Hey Roxanna, the best natural method against aphids are ladybugs! They can be purchased at a Home Depot or online. They will devour those aphids like crazy. Plants with umbel flowers will also attract ladybugs. Hope that helps.

I tried this, and had such high hopes. I even kept them under refrigeration and released them at night onto the soil, like they say to do. Unfortunately, the next day, every single ladybug was gone, but the aphids were still there. What did I do wrong?

In my area aphids are very common. They appear every year, on many flowers and vegetables. For me, the best natural way to inactivate them is to use a mixture of oil and water. I use Camelina Oil, but you can use another type of oil if this one is not available in your area, it can be linseed oil (the ratio of oil to water is about 1:10 - or more if you are desperate☺)

    It’s not Kintzley’s Ghost!
Kintzley’s Ghost foliage is blue almost Eucalyptus like! Flowers are pale yellow with almost no fragrance at all, and it has red fruit in fall!
    Love your garden!❤

I had the same exact thing happen to my John Clayton honeysuckle. My plan is to prune hard in late winter and spray the vines with dormant horticultural oil to smother any overwintering eggs. My hummers rely so much on this vine and this summer was a disaster for the blooms! My vine is about 5 years old and never had issues until this past spring. Like you, by the time I realized something was wrong, their numbers were way out of control. I had lots of ladybugs and larve to help out but it did take a very long time and she didn't rebloom very well at all. I hope to combat this with the early oil treatment. Good luck to you and your beautiful honeysuckle!

Honey suckle is one of my favourites, the nice unique light scent is beautiful..
I live in England & we had honey suckle in our garden,I remember been a young girl growing up watching the bee's buz around, the smell of the flowers & the shape of the flowers like little trumpets for the garden fairy & elves🧚🌺☮️🦋🍄💜🧚🌺☮️🦋🍄💜..
I have now got honey suckle & one minute it looks healthy the next all the leaves are going yellow, brown & falling off,but only from the bottom to half way up,the top looks healthy & green🤷🤷..The leaves were curling on it,so I topped up the soil made sure the roots were covered..that solved that..I feed it blood fish & bone now & again & a bit of chicken manure..
I have heard the reason could be it's getting to much sun on it..
There's another channel, but the lady who does it is English..I will find out the name & come back & let you know..Even though we are in different countries we can still help each other..
Also I noticed a lot of white on it recently, it's a shame we can't share pictures on here..
Also mine is in a pot I think I'm going to put it in the ground..Honey suckle can be so up & down,I do see slot with light green leaves, might be a certain time of year..
I wish I had the confidence to start a channel, but it's having the confidence..Maybe one day lol..
    Happy gardening ☮️🌺☮️🌺

I hate to be the barer of bad tidings but I think you are going to continue having issues with the honeysuckle. I had one also and it twined along the railing up to a two story deck. The first three or four years it was great, with lovely flowers every year. Then it got attacked by aphids and they came back worse and worse every year. Spraying with a hose did not work because there were just too many. The flowers and new growth looked horrible. After several more years I gave up and cut the whole thing back and dug out the roots (quite a chore). I know you like how it looks, but you may need to rethink based on what happens next year. Honeysuckle puts on a lot of new growth in the spring, along with the flowers. The aphids will continue to be attracted to it.
I'm an organic gardener so don't have any recommendations on sprays that will not harm pollinators. Aphids were really bad last year and this year. I'm having lots of issues with my ornamental cherry and crabapple in Illinois zone 5B. Also, I think what you have is what I had and it's a common honeysuckle. It can get huge and is considered invasive.

Thank you for this video. Our honeysuckle needs trimming desperately. We live in Missouri . Found the trellis on Amazon and hubby gave it a thumbs up 👍. Right now the honeysuckle is planted with a bamboo teepee that has weathered . So….. it is time to move and update. Again thank you.

I broadcast diatomaceous earth in my beds as well as in the chicken yard and coup. This does help keep the pests away and also helps the chickens with internal parasites. Neem oil is effective with the pests as well but can hurt pollinators so timing of application is critical. I have also made the tobacco garlic tea and yeah it smells about as bad as it sounds lol I used to use joy dish soap in the sprayer - 💛🌟💛

The leaves are wrong for your honeysuckle to be kintzley's ghost. It might be a “Mandarin” variety. Yours appears to be a very light yellow orange. Your vine has standard leaves while “kintzley's ghost” has distinctive round leaves and a bush like habit as well. So, that being said I would say you have a Mandarin honeysuckle 🧡💛🧡

Aphids - UGH! I have them this year on my Mandeville plant, I’ll be interested in what you learn on treating them. I started with the hose and squishing them off of my plant then went to Neem oil and I still have them and I’m at a lose on how to get rid of them so I can bring my plant in to over winter it.

Honeysuckle has taken over…..my husband is ill with lymphoma. The honeysuckle took over my yard….it’s killed azaleas and anything in it’s path. He wants to trim them down, dig them up and I agree….plant small ones in the front of the house and use the place where they have been killed for garden use. I’m in central Virginia and honeysuckle just takes over! We will make sure they don’t come back! Beautiful….sweet smelling, and medicinal but not for my yard! I didn’t have time to harvest the blooms with him ill but I’m not sure I would want to after it killed large gorgeous azaleas! Completely strangled them out. 😢😢😢

    You have a lovely garden.❤
I've heard of gardeners spraying with diluted peppermint castle soap, might help with pests. Also, may ask where you got the metal trellis your honeysuckle is on? Thank you.

Wonder if it's not Hall's Japanese Honeysuckle
(Lonicera japonica 'Halliana') 🤔 I've noticed that after fertilizing(organic) I tend to get lots of aphids on new growth. Wonder if the fertilizer from surrounding plantings isn't leaching on your honeysuckle.

Which is weird because from what I read plants who are “lacking” on nutrients tend to be spotted by the aphids… so 🤷🏻‍♀️
