The United Kingdom is a sovereign country in Europe, off the north-western coast of the continental mainland. It comprises England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and most of the smaller islands within the British Isles. Northern Ireland shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland; otherwise, the United Kingdom is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea. The total area of the United Kingdom is 93,628 square miles (242,495 km2), with an estimated 2023 population of over 68 million people.
The United Kingdom has a long and rich history, dating back to the Roman occupation in the 1st century AD. The country has been a major power in the world for centuries, and its influence can be seen in many aspects of global culture. The United Kingdom is a developed country with a high standard of living. The economy is based on services, manufacturing, and financial services. The political system is a constitutional monarchy, with the Queen as the head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of government.
