- Live from the Apollo Theatre 50th Anniversary 1985, "Body and Soul" is a popular song and jazz standard written in 1930 with lyrics by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton; and music by Johnny Green.
"Body and Soul" is a popular jazz song featured on Billie Holidays album with the same title. "Body and Soul" was written in New York City for the British actress and singer Gertrude Lawrence. It was first performed in London by her. It was first published in England. Libby Holman introduced it in the U.S. in the 1930 Broadway revue Three's a Crowd. Louis Armstrong was the first jazz musician to record "Body and Soul". The tune grew quickly in popularity, and by the end of 1930 at least eleven groups had recorded it. "Body and Soul" remains a jazz standard, with hundreds of versions performed and recorded by dozens of artists.
Tony Bennett recorded the classic pop standard Body And Soul, with Amy Winehouse at Abbey Road Studios in London March, 2011. The duet proceeds will be donated to her charity "The Amy Winehouse Foundation."
One of the most famous and influential takes was recorded by Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra on October 11, 1939, at their only recording session for Bluebird, a subsidiary of RCA Victor. The recording is unusual in that the song's melody is only hinted at in the recording; Hawkins' two-choruses of improvisation over the tune's chord progression constitute almost the entire take. Because of this, as well as the imaginative use of harmony and break from traditional swing cliches, the recording is recognised as part of the "early tremors of bebop". In 2004, the Library of Congress entered it into the National Recording Registry
To this day, "Body and Soul" is the most recorded jazz standard.
"Dedicated To You" is a song written by Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin, Hy Zaret. The first recording was by Andy Kir and His Clouds of Joy in 1936.
Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 -- April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century." Nicknamed "Sailor" (for her salty speech), "Sassy" and "The Divine One", Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989.
William Clarence Eckstine (July 8, 1914 -- March 8, 1993) was an American singer of ballads and a bandleader of the swing era. Eckstine's smooth baritone and distinctive vibrato broke down barriers throughout the 1940s, first as leader of the original bop big-band, then as the first romantic black male in popular music. Eckstine's recording of "I Apologize," MGM Pop Single, (1948) was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.
She was truly the best contralto ever. There will never be another "Sassy Sarah", and Billy Eckstine, what can I say with his sultry unforgettable voice? Simply brilliant. They are both missed dearly. RIP ❤️❤️❤️
Simply the greatest American female popular singer ever--- wish more people knew her greatness RIP Sarah there will never be another
Boy you said it better thanks love sassy
She was great, but Ella was even better...

Sarah Vaughan comes right after the greatest singer that ever has graced this earth, Lady Day!
@@monicabella7894 Ella, Sarah and then Lady Day, in my opinion

Music is the shorthand of emotion.
(Leo Tolstoi)
2 people that could sing the phone book.
Sarah Vaughan started out with Billy Exsteines band. She’s still number one when it comes to a voice and vocal range that I can never get enough of . Great combination Sarah & Billy.
This is why she is called "The Divine One". Love her!!!!!!!
Awesome, now that's singing.
I’m only 21 years young but I have to say, her voice uplifts my spirit and she’s such a legend! COME THROUGH VOICE! 👏🏾
Probably the best voice ever and she knew how to use it. Wow!
I'm not sure i agree....b/c of Ella and Billie...decisions decisions 🤔
Ella and Billie are wonderful. Truly. They are in the Pantheon. But... Sarah Vaughan? She is... The Queen.
Also... yeah, she knew very well how to use her voice and also had a sharp ear. For me, she is...

Lady Day ist naturally the greatest singer. After her comes Sarah Vaughan.
Sarah Vaughn had the most Rich, Beautiful tone of all female singers I ever heard! Wow Richness and Melody!
Two of the greatest voices in Jazz. Unfortunately they have left us. RIP
TWO OF THE GREATEST VOICES THE GODS EVER GIFTED US WITH...REGARDLESS OF GENRE...THEIRS IS A BEAUTY "BEYOND CATEGORY" AS MAESTRO ELLINGTON PUT IT!
Aretha may have the voice of heaven, Sarah have the voice of most wonderful dreams!
They've BOTH got the heavenly voice. Just DIVINE😍
@Curtis Ostriker Your ear must be in your foot, they each had their 'own' gifts, it not necessary to make comparisons . . . I love them both! If anything Sarah is the one that got dished for vocal acrobatics, which I, happen love everything she did, top, bottom and mid-range . . . Sarah 'The Devine One' - Ree 'The Queen'
@Curtis Ostriker I appologize if I hurt yo' sensibities, but if you can't stand the heat stay outta the Kitchen. Take care, be safe and keep your hands clean "Rona" virus.
@ANITA Ospedale Not fe mi, Sarah and then whoever you want.
Sarah & Billy.....doesn't get better than that!!!!! CREAM OF THE CROP!!!!
Sarah has this powerful voice, then this little girl like speaking voice. Wow!
nancydrew5 right?!
Sarah, could do things with her sensational unique heavenly voice that no other woman singer has matched to this day. She is in the same one of a kind league as Ella Fitzgerald, Dame Shirley Bassey......amazing control, and so many different timbres to put the words across and those long phrases!
+HandwhistlerBen ..A perfect vocalist!
I shouldn't have put Shirley into that category! Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday are in that group with Ella and Sarah.
+HandwhistlerBen
Two cents here! Etta James would have been too and a top contender too if she had only sung some standard tunes besides the two or three albums she did. Why she went so blue was crazy as her biggest hits in the mainstream were At Last and My Foolish Heart, but I guess she had problems way beyond choice of music.
Anyway this video of Sarah Vaughn is a gem of gems. ciao, and lol.
+HandwhistlerBen Just discovered her yesterday, and I'm in love with her voice. (thank you for the extra recommandations.)
JT, you are most welcome!
Man I will continue to say this time and time again.. If these so called singers knew or even had any idea where they have come from musically!! We would see greatness too a point. Not like this but very poised. This is an art form.. This is what and who these Singers were.. They were artists that should never be forgotten and always treasured for what they did..
So soft spoken yet could sing like the roar of a LION! Such magnificance, control and style. Wow! one of GOD's wonders. Classically, a LADY of her own distinction.
Sarah was never wobbly. Billy did develop a vocal wobble, but Sarah never developed a wobble. Even with his wobble, Eckstine remained one of the suavest performers to grace the microphone, He was an icon to many.
This is a gem! The beauty of real music never dies
Words fail me. No words are good enough to describe Sarah Vaughns voice. Simply..Sarah Vaughn.
Her phrasing was wonderful
Nothing compares to this music...…..
GOD’S GIFTS TO MUSIC ❤️💙🙏🏾🙏🏾
This has got to be THEE BEST EVER vocal rendition of "Body and Soul". Sarah is killing !!!!!!!!!!
Checkout the 1946 recording!
So beautiful ,thankyou.RIP Sarah.
I can't decide which is most devine her high notes or her low note both are perfect
My favorite singer in this whole world!!!!!!
Same.
The1Tree2 same here...
What a wonderful duo!!
Il n'y en a pas beaucoup qui peuvent avoir cette voix-là à cet âge, et que cela fasse joli.
There are no more singers like Ms. Vaughn and Mr. Eckstine anymore. I miss the quality of their voices, the dignity with which they presented themselves and the regal bearing they all had. I predict that their songs and styles must return.
No one can replicate that voice. Her ranges are out of this world.
Two of Anita O'day's favorite singers.
She drove people crazy with her voice from start to end true true diva star legend goddess angel
Ms. Vaughn, nothing compares 2 U. I luvs my Billie and my Ella and my Nina et. al., but you're the tops!
they sure dnt sing like this anymore....simply magical
Magnificent Sarah what a voice
please!! this is how you use a voice...Sarah totally eats this "body and soul".... she has transcended the form of the song melody! She lived inside this song for 40years ...this cheesy arrangement melts into her brilliance. Genius and a gift from the universe. The first 'you' she soars and hits from nowhere..like omg...i cant breath it is so thrilling to feel this.
She continued to build that magnificent instrument until her death, she never lost anything , she just added and got more beautiful each note..
And Billy ? simply wow even here where he moves to the last journey of his voice that deep clear voice vibrato is hugging us. and yeah as Billy says "sing it baby"
....i saw this the night it 1st aired....mesmerizing....time stood still when they sang....and when he told her .....sing it baby...i just shook my head....grown folks music....
Sarah and Billy, like a bowl of peaches and cream soooooooo sweet!!!
There are no modern equivalents today.
Not better...this voice..my godness..this voice..
@@coxkoala591 Agree. Sarah's voices is totally unique in sound combined with superb technique. Billy being Billy like no other.
right , I agree...but demi Lovato ain't too shabby!
Maybe the difference is that those types of singers are still out there but unfortunately they don't get exposure today. Samara McLendon is a young Ella.
Anita Baker got it all from her.
The best voice ever. ❤
Out of this world!
She was known as the master of the microphone. She used it in conjunction with her voice to accentuate the dynamics- Absolutely Brilliant
Believe me, EVERYONE knows Sarah Vaughn as one of the greatest JAZZ singers on this or any other earth. I don't know who you know, but I've never met anyone who doesn't know her! Glad you discovered her. Keep listening.
She was totally wonderful. Seriously moving knowing they're both gone. They were great. Right? The real thing. Over and out.
They were busy making love up there - to each other and to their audience. What a wonder to see them, hear them. What treasures. Thankfully, there were captured on record and film for us to forever hold dear.
Beautifully said. AGREED.
One of televisions greatest musical moments. The Devine One with Mr. B. True Icons Forever.
The greats ♥️ This is how it's done with class. Ms.Vaughn had a remarkable vocal range and,Mr. Eckstine had a voice like smooth velvet. I grew up listening to both. Thanks for sharing.
Just silky smooth exceptional vocals. Class all the way! What phenomenal music! The World of music ain't like this no more. Too many haters, fakes and clowns out there!
I loved how both of them turned and waved at the musicians as they left the stage , Classy !
Wow what an incredible voice
The odds of even ONE such unique vocalists ever coming again, much less two in the same era, on the same stage together, have to be incalculable.
Brought tears to my eyes. The inimitable Sassy Sarah in pitch perfect top of her form, wow! I never saw this before and it blew me away. A wonderful treat. Thanks so much.
+trumpsahead brought boring feeling to my brain, then I start read this comment and no more, bye!
+laxwork
Dumb kid, don't know any better.
Brings tears of joy to the eyes! There is only one Sarah Vaughn. Billy was a perfect compliment to her voice. Look for Easter Parade by this duo. Amazing!
Man, what a talented woman! One of a kind.
Love her voice
Wow! Even as her voice changed through the years, she was still ‘Divine’........no one ever to sing like her again, beyond classic.....I have been listening to her since I was 5 years old. She was my father’s favorite singer....
Sarah and Billy! It just ain't any better than this!
Awesome duet: divine voices.
Yes....the devine one!!!!👏🏾👏🏾
Wow he was goodlooking even as he got older
Beautiful music, great lyrics with melody. Love it.
Sarah's voice was a force to be reckoned with, she unleashed it to our listening pleasure.
At this point in her life, she was having such fun being creative and enjoying the variety of contrasts and surprises she could offer to the listeners. What a joyful person! Thanks, Sarah.
The Divine One - there never be another voice as beautiful as hers!💥
I just love the two of them. Such marvelous voices!
Im blown away I've always loved Billy Eckstine but I am just in awe at Sarah voice at this age absolute perfection!!! Almost unreal.
My heart melts every time I hear them... !!!
Isabelle Frost , mine do too. I love the her voice and this is my favorite song. RIP Sarah Vaughan
Two of the best things about my early years....
I just can't get enough of Sarah.
:-)
Who could?!
My eldest sister sang her tunes in the forties I loved ever since
I discovered Sara Vaughn when I was in my teens. Even though James Brown, Marvin Gaye and a host of great R&,B singers dominated the late sixties and seventie and eighties,. You always found your way back to jazz.
Heard her at an event in San Diego when I was 11 years old...set the standard for me..she was amazing..♥️
@@carolkelly1324 She makes you want to listen...
That angel's voice coming out of a human mouth. It makes me shiver with wonder.
Wonderful, superb n spell binding rendition. Sarah Vaughan was a great showbiz lady with a mellifluous voice dat brought jazz to the highest level. My deepest respects.
I can listen to this forever..True legendary voices ...
This really defines the sensation that Sassy was! The brilliant and talented lady.
Beautiful composition 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I had forgotten how pretty and lovely she was. I was in love with her.
Two incredible, distinctive voices.
That’s what you call an undeniably brilliant singer. I’ve been taking vocal lessons in the last year, and listening to her singing for me is so satisfying because she has really, really knew how to do it and deeply understood its artistry. Thank you for sharing this amazing piece of art.
I cam home from school (1954) and the song on the radio, stunned me on the spot! It was Billy Eckstine singing 'Know one but you'. Each time I hear it, I am reminded of that simpler, better, wholesome life in Briain in the 50's!
I could kick myself repeatedly for not taking advantage of her performances at The Blue Note, in New York. I never got to see her in person, thank God for these videos...She's beyond words.
The power of her voice, just mesmerizing! Thank God I saw her once in person, Detroit's Cobo Hall 1965.
Two glorious musical instruments in the service of two great artists...
LOVELY AND SMOOTH........FOREVER WILL BE LISTENED TOO........COOL
THE BEST OF THE BEST. THANKS FOR POSTING.
I loved Sass and "B." Together, they are heavenly!
Louie prima
What beautiful voices what great talent what class . And yet today people who have never heard them have lost a lesson in talent class and beautiful music
oh my!!! Oh Sarah how I wish I was there during your time,❤️ you're the best
that voice....wow. there must be a God:)
Her voice contains every blessed beautiful in the unisse
I cannot put into words what her voice does for and to me. I just know I weep, the tears are uncontrollable and a painful joy.
Wow two of my favorites of all time. This music is timeless. I can't get enough.
Fantabulous !!!
Неугасаемая Звезда души джаза ! ! ! 🥰💐
Classy classy classy classy classy ICON
Love Her Style Sarah Vaughan
Fabian Mccheng ..." Body and Soul"..was a perfect vocal performance!
This still sends shivers all over. This was real talent. Never to return again. I had to buy the DVD of this entire show because it was excellent.
Thanks for adding Sarah Vaughan to our listening - she's been my favorite all my long life...but I never had heard her piano playing though I knew she played and sang from her early New Jersey school and church years. And always love Billy E, too! Imagine their talents/friendships!
Man where have I been. I did not appreciate these singers as a teenager ad an old man now I do.
Sarah and Billy ate my favorite singers.
Wow! Powerful!
It has been said (by professionals who knew) when she hit her bottom notes, she could make the floor boards 'rattle' on the stage and still soar into the stratosphere with her 'top notes'! Billy always said "She's my favorite!"
What a great team!❤
