I’m 45 now but this brings back one time when I was 10. I’d forgoten to bring a notebook to school and my teacher just lost it. She kept hitting me so hard with a wooden ruler, my hands were red and swollen for hours. I remember holding back tears in class because showing pain felt like weakness. Such incidents has stayed with me - the physical hurt, the humiliation, the fear, shame. It’s wild to think how normalised this was, like we just had to take it and move on. Looking back, i now know this kind of punishment messes with a kid’s self-esteem and trust. This isn’t about discipline, it only brings trauma. Schools, colleges, and society as a whole need to do so much more. We need systems in place-real ones, not just empty rules -to make sure kids are protected. Corporal punishment should be actively fought against at every level. Our kids deserve to feel safe, not scared.
This was much needed. Infact when I talk to parents who are complaining about the children hitting them (the parents)... I asked the parents that have you hit them in their childhood, and undoubtedly the answer comes yes. So then I tell the parents, "You only have taught them that if you don't listen to me I will hit you and in the Teenage when the children are trying to convey something to their parents, and now when the parents are not able to understand the children, the start hitting the parents back... Following the same lesson they have learnt in their childhood... If you don't understand, HIT.....
Children thrive on guidance, not fear. It's crucial to establish stronger systems-parenting resources, educational initiatives, and legal protections-to ensure that acts like these are no longer dismissed as mere “discipline.”
