In episode 3 “Lamentis” of Marvel’s Loki, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) sings an Asgardian song. This song is actually an excerpt of the Norwegian song “Jeg Saler min Ganger” (I saddle my steed) by Benedicte Maurseth and Erlend Nødtvedt. It was written for the series, and the full-length version will be featured on the upcoming soundtrack.

There is a heartbreaking element to this song because Loki knows he can never go home again.
Maybe he will try despite that 🤷♀️🤷♀️
couldnt he just use the TVA equipment to open a portal to Asgard (in whatever timeline)? Like obviously it wouldnt be forever but... I feel like he would totally at least try that once
@@Fuckyourselfgoogle The TVA prunes (bombs or disintegrates) stray timelines. When Loki was arrested they bombed his timeline branch so he can go to "an" Asgard, but he can never go back to "his" Asgard. He'll always be an interloper pretending to be the Loki of that line/time, who might show up at any moment or who should be dead. Also, any interaction would immediately draw the TVA unless he's destroyed them by then. He and all the variants are effectively homeless.

Any other norwegian speakers notice when she asked, "are you drunk?!"
"No, I'm just full..."
Yeah, that was fun!
So thats what that was. Im from sweden. I also wondered about that.
Ja. Eg merka det, og det var fantastisk.
Haha yeah that was fun! I’m Swedish but full is the same
@@vaflerdeig1818 ja, fyf det e arti at dem faktisk bruka norsk både sang og utrykk!
And when she then says "Loki you're drunk", and he replies "No I'm full" it makes it fantastic as "full" means drunk in Norwegian 🤙
As a norwegian this was absolutely a pleasant suprise, and it also hints at some of the thoughts Loki might be having in the back of his head while the show is going.
Its wonderful!
Guys what if they actually come to norway to either shot another episode, or tom hiddleston come visit because, well idk he wants to?
Same
@@majalossius9447 I would die! and go into full fangirl mode :P
how is his pronunciation etc
Damn Tom Hiddleston’s singing is amazing. Seriously he’s got an amazing singing voice 🤯👏

I love this, the softer part of the song is just beautiful.
definitely the best part of the episode
Is it going to be the big hit thing from this series though?
Yeah, one thing I've been enjoying about the new TV shows is that we get to see things that the movies typically don't have time for: characters having down time. Loki getting drunk and singing an Asgardian folk song, Falcon and Bucky being bros, a little bit of downtime to flesh out who these people are when they're not fighting alien invasions or killer robots.
YES
We all speak just the truth.
Norwegian Asgardian folk music is probably going to be huge in the MCU and in real life again
The fact that tom hiddleston took the time to learn all the proper ways to sing this was a show of dedication
he already know like 5 languages :D + latin :D
This song sounds like something out of LOTR. His solo reminds me of Aragorn's coronation.
THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT! it's so beautiful
Same!!
I know they used alot of old norse(old norwegian) in Lotr. When Eowyn sings its taken from old norse, and what Loki sings here is modern norwegian. Tolkien made up some languages, my best guess is that Peter Jackson wanted to use a old language which no-one knows and sounds "good". a elf-like sound..
This more 'happy' part also sounds like from LOTR, when hobbits were singing in second movie (I think it was it)
Edit: wait it was probably third movie
@@joakimbraseth3663 pretty sure tolkien made up 10 languages with them being westron, sindarin, black speech, telarin, quenya, kuzdul, entish, valarin, rohirric and adunaic…yeaaaaah bit more thsn a few and deserves to be respected as that is a ridiculous amount of effort and he actually had linguists help him compose several of these languages to make them actually effective
You know... for a minute, for a split second, we got to see Loki’s more caring and more open side. He was singing about how he was lost and someone was calling him back... like Fregga. This made me almost tear up for a moment. He was almost saying as if he wanted to be something more than his own mischievous nature. I think he has done terrible things... but he wants to be so much more than his bad deeds. Maybe he will prove to be a hero instead of a grey area variant... we shall see
You and me both
He has proven himself more than a Hero.
How do you feel after two years and watching the second season? (If you did ofc)
I actually wish the asguardians did speak their language more often
Yeah I know imagine what Thor or Odin would sound like

@Edward Lee Miller no kidding :)
Several folks have noted how poignant this song given how much Loki misses Asgard, but what is truly touching for me is that he is singing this Asgardian song to Sylvie about longing for the home she was stolen from. Brilliant.
Yes! It's very romantic, too.
Just noticed the people in the background are like “wonderful” and “here, here, sylvie!”. They’re really enjoying Loki’s antics!
I watched this scene last night (late to the party, yeah I know), and as a Swede, my brain did a double-take when it realized that Loki started singing in Norwegian. It was a tiny moment and a monumental surprise at the same time.
I love that they did this. Didn't at all have to have this in the show but this was really beautiful. Norwegian sounds so majestic, yet at some points so similar to my own natice tongue of Dutch.
Tom Hiddleston is such a treasure
The best part of Wandavision IMHO was when she starts to sing to her children in Sokovian. It's such an endearing detail that I enjoyed out all the series. Wish there was more of it.
Wish magneto turned up in that series and told her of Jewish heritage and real sokovian mother. Honestly cause the actor for her brother looks similar to Micheal fassbender so it would be perfect
0:54 Tom makes me literally melt here.
This scene was really surreal as someone who speaks norwegian
How does it feel to have the world worship your feet, with your magical language and mythology. :D
It's amazing how Marvel Studios makes their homework on these characters. Norse mythology(which we all know)and actual language of the people. It's the details

I removed my previous and erroneous objection! It's tuned out the "trees" are dancing like you wrote, not "cranes" as I thought.
@@robertsandgren9389 I thought it was cranes as well, because that is how they translated it on Disney+
He sounds a lot like Viggo Mortensen when he sings. Got that lovely high timber
true
I knew his singing reminded me of something...you are so right.
Riiight! I felt like I "heard" this before!
Some editor working in the production has an isolated version of the audio where it’s just Tom Hiddleston with the instrumentals. I just feel it
Never thoght i whoud hear some one in the MCU sing in Norwegian
He finally gets to be the star
I was kinda fed up with this episode at first and then came this song.
I can hear the smile in his voice, even though I feel the heartache in his words. Truly a bittersweet experience.
If there is any reason to like this episode then this is it
Idk why but it makes me happy they would reference in this song Idunn and her golden apples. Like it makes so much sense he would sing a homesick song about those.
I swear Disney+ Marvel Shows should have a Soundtrack featuring "Agatha All Along" "Madripoor Club(remix)" and this song.
The madripoor track is "came for the low"
Disney+ MCU soundtrack
And demons, that song is an absolute bop
This is such a beautiful song and I don’t even speak Norwegian 🥺
I know this is Norwegian and honestly it was refreshing to see the Norse influence, but the melody and vocal trills gave me some nostalgic Aragorn from Return of the King feels. ☺️
Can we just appreciate the amount of true TALENT it takes to sing a song this well in (what I assume) is a foreign language to him?! Like JESUS MAN I LOVE YOU!!
Even if he could go home, what is there to go to?
He is a man who dreams of home and knows in his heart it does not exist even though there is a hearth there that will accept who he has grown into.
Am I the only one who is reminded of Argorn's elven song in return of the king??
I cried when He sang That part and I didn't know the words but now I do ❤

Best thing about the show! Wow!
I loved this part! Hoping they do a CD of music from this series!
They will release a soundtrack, and there the full lenght version of "Jeg saler min ganger" will be present, all four verses of it.
@@MidnightsEdge awesome thanks for the heads up!
What a fantastic show. I'm going to miss it so much.
My headcanon is that this is a song Loki knows, written by Bragi about Idunn
Omg! I love that he is speaking my main language
Love how tom hiddlestin learned noreweigin
Wish marvel released a full version
They will, for the soundtrack.
I mean they did release Zemo's dancing 😂
This is so lovely. Thank you! I know this probably isn't right but part of me can't help feeling like he's singing about Sigyn. He's probably just singing about his home in general, probably his mother, and there has been no mention of Sigyn in the MCU but given the themes of these shows so far, having the Norse goddess of loyalty and grieving seems very appropriate. at least, that's my basic understanding of her, I could be wrong.
I was also thinking about Sigyn ore Solveig fra Per Gynt.
Tom hiddleston has a wonderful singing voice.
I love this episode, she is always surprised by him
I hope they let Tom record the full song so we can hear it

Tom Hiddleston is singing the same way "Thorin" king of the dwarfs sings. In the movie "The Hobbits: An Unexpected Journey". Thorin, is singing after sharing a dinner with his friends.
the amount of comfort this gives me is just really nice
as a Norwegian HIS PRONOUNCIATION IS AMAZING
Update, the soundtrack is on iTunes as Loki: Vol 1 (Episodes 1-3) [Original Soundtrack]. This song is called "Very Full."
Damn, they released the drinking song in part one of the score - it's in higher quality than the scene (possibly a mix of different takes) but sadly doesn't include any of the other verses that the original songwriter penned. Wonder if they'll allow the composers to perform the full original version at some point. This is such a beautiful song, written so well, and it deserves a full release.
They've released it? Could you pls send the link?

What’s that *one* instrument they use around 0:28? It’s so beautiful.
It’s a «hardingfele», a Norwegian variant of the violin used in old folk and traditional music. It has 4-5 extra ressonance strings that give it a caracteristic sound.
bring it to Spotify please
It will probably be there once they release the series soundtrack with the full version of the song.

tom is good at everything
one of the coolest thing ever
Except for his ÆØÅs his pronunciation is almost flawless
His Å isn't actually all that bad tho
The worst part in my opinion was how half of the "å"s and all the "æ"s sounded like vague "a"s, but other than that, his pronunciation is very good. And certainly a lot better than certain, other attempts.

It’s Norwegian, not “asgardian”. Established already😂....
What Tsujiharaa said. The official Disney+ closed captions designate the langugage as Asgardian. If you see video description however, or even in-video captions, you'll find we are quite aware that the actual language is indeed Norwegian;p
Norwegian with a British accent = Asgardian. 😁
An asgardian song yes! But it’s not a made up asgardian language. That’s the point I was making, I saw people getting confused as to what language it was. It’s Norwegian.
Yeah also the gods probably spoke old norse or asgardian was most likely close to old norse, and Icelandic is what comes closest to old norse so I feel like that would have been better
OMG😍
You can actually hear most of the words even if you are from Sweden and most but not all of the words are what I usually understand of Norwegian . It would be interesting 2 hear what someone that is from Norway would say about his pronunciation.
Overall, pretty good - he is better in the slower parts, allthough he does confuse some AÆØÅ, which is only to be expexted. When the song speeds up though, enunciation goes out the window. Case in point, there is a good chance he is saying "Men tranene danser..." instead of men trærne danser..." but there is no way to know for sure until official lyrics are released.
@@MidnightsEdge my friend (native Norwegian speaker) tried to sing the chorus, but she messed up a couple of times at "fossene" by somehow getting her tongue in a twist when she sung it fast.
not me who studied to song and can now sing it in Norwegian
A better song/poem in this vein is Robert Burns' The Ball of Kerrymuir.
The fact that he learnt it in 4 days... I've tried to learn Swedish for years but the pronunciation is hard to get right ! Nevertheless, I can understand some words in Norwegian as is it sometimes similar to Swedish :)
