- Back in those days, 1967/8? i remember reading in Blue & Soul magazine, that this was the best soul record ever! I loved it and played it all the time. Then i lost it whilst cycling over the local golf links!
Came here after watching the series Reacher on Prime video. What a lovely song!❤️

You and everybody else
_LYRICS_
In this world where people are fighting with each other
Nobody to count on
Not even your own brother
So if someone comes along
Who gives you genuine affection
Get it while you can
Get it while you can
Get it while you can
Don't you turn your back on love
When you love somebody
You're taking a chance on sorrow
But who knows, baby
We may not be here tomorrow
So if someone comes your way
With love and protection
Get it while you can
Get it while you can
Get it while you can
Don't you turn your back on love
I want to tell you a little bit about myself
Once I had a good women
But I didn't count my blessings
Oh I wish she could hear me
I've learned a big lesson
So if someone brings you love
Don't throw it away like I did

He was friend of the family and he was a very giving person. I am so glad I got to know him and he will always be remembered.
So powerful. If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye... You ain't breathing.
Howard Tate was one of the greatest underrated soul men to walk this earth! With a voice as smooth as molasses, he had the misfortune of getting lost in record company and management indifference. I recall hearing the"Get it While You Can," album back in '66 and wondering where this extraordinary talent came from? To this day I consider "Stop," and "Get it While You Can," to be comparable to anything that Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, or Jerry Butler, for example, ever recorded. I recall scooping up the album up in the cut-out bins and giving it to every one I knew who loved soul music. While Janis did an admirable cover of "Get it While You Can," no one could touch the original by Tate. It was the perfect melding of voice and arrangement, and I tear up EVERY time I hear it - no exceptions! Tate never gained traction on Verve, and his later albums for Lloyd Price's label, and the Atlantic album never made him the star he deserved to be. He fell on hard times, but made a comeback a few years ago, and performed in the Bay Area among other venues, before he passed from a heart attack. To Howard Tate, you belong in the Soul Hall of Fame for your remarkable body of work, though small. You will not be forgotten.
Thank you for this. i just recently got to know Howard Tate but wow what a voice! I cant help but think KC Hailey should cover this song, he would be perfect. Howard Tate should never be forgotten! God bless
Heard Janis Joplin sing this at Woodstock. Love both renditions.
By all means, get it while you can ❤❤
I found the album in a used record store in 1970 and when I heard this song I was overwhelmed. He really makes you feel it even 45 years later.
You nailed it! Tate touched a raw nerve, and it was overpowering. I can't listen to this song without tears welling up. Tate was an underrated master of the genre. Too bad he never got his due.
One of the greast soul/blues LP's of all time
Finding Howard and seeing him resume his career was an amazing experience... proof positive that if you believe in something and work at it, it CAN happen.
Tate was like a holy man, spreading the word. His voice was too good to be true."Stop," and "Get it While You Can," will be with us as long as we revere great soul music - which should mean forever.
I love this song... so much.. I have to play it over and over again.
GET IT WHILE YOU CAN... could this be told better. LOVE IS LIFE
In this world
where people
are fighting
with each other,
Noone to count on
Not even
your own brother.
Till someone
comes along
and gives you
genuine affection.
Chorus:
Get it while you can (Ooooooh)
Better get it while you can
Get it while you can
Don't turn your back on love
When you love
somebody
You're taking a chance
on sorrow.
Who knows, baby,
We may not, may not
be here tomorrow.
Should someone
comes along
and gives you
genuine protection
(Chorus)
I wanna tell you a little bit about myself.
Once I had a good woman
But I didn't
count my blessings.
Oh I wish she could hear me
to see, oh I've learned a bitter lesson.
So if someone
comes along
and gives you
genuine affection.
(Chorus 2x)
Don't turn your back on love.
top track by one of the great lost soul singers.
Howard Tate, you ROCK! We need more of your songs today!

This is the best version.
It is, but Janis Joplin's great cover led me here.
Great version of this- didn't know of Howard Tate before my buddy put me on to him. Great voice, how did I miss him? Rest in Peace Howard -
So sorry. We lost a great one, a legend. RIP.
Oh yes. Count those blessings.

Classic music for the soul...
Damn!!!! First time I've heard him. Amazing!!!
Quelle voix et quel gâchis !!! Merci à RFI de m'avoir fait découvrir cette voix splendide de la soul à l'image d'Otis REDING, Wilson PICKETT et autres Sam and Dave. Bravo. Ambroise B

A number of subsequent were-gonna be practices then mostly spent listening to Howard do his thing. Glad he's got more out since. I have the Vinyl still. (c) S G Schoenfeld
This is the title track, I believe, from one of the greatest Soul LP's ever recorded, and my personal favorite Soul album of all time.
(This song was covered some years after its 1967 release, by Janis Joplin, on her last LP, "Pearl.")
This great LP also features the original version of "Ain't Nobody Home," covered by Bonnie Raitt and, iconically, by B. B. King.
Addendum:
Jerry Ragovoy, the songwriter/producer, is in the company of George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller, and a very few others, in his ability to show that a European-American can really understand Afro-American music.

You are so right! This IS indeed one of the greatest soul albums ever recorded. Tate was an unacknowledged (at the time) master of the art from. Too bad he never got his due in the corrupt world of the record business.

The LP was recorded around 1967, I believe, and I found it in a bargain bin, brand new, in 1972.
I paid $1 for it, and I still have it.
Wow, I actually don't remember this....this was real soul at its best....nice !!!!
Locating Howard Tate back in my radio days (1997-2002) and seeing him and Jerry Ragovoy hook up again was the pinnacle of my "career" in showbiz..... funny thing about it it was that after everything got going, CD came out, Grammy nomination and all that, I figured out that I;d never pull off anything like that in the entertainment biz ever again, so I closed that chapter and wen;t on to do other things. There's probably a great soul record in that somewhere, but I;m no songwriter!
This is without a doubt one of the best R&B songs ever recorded. Thank you for posting it. I have the original vinyl but recently bought the remastered album.

A voice as smooth and sweet as honey
Awesome!!! Thanks so much for posting:)

Here because of Reacher too. Heard the righteousness in these lyrics and had to hear the whole thing.

Jerry Ragovoy who just passed away wrote this song.

@guitarbassplayer68 - I agree. It was just today that I discovered two fairly new artists who sing and perform in the tradition of 60's soul music -- if you are not familiar with them please check them here on UA-cam: Charles Bradley and separately, Sharon Jones. Soul music is alive and well if you check these two artists out. Hopefully, some even younger artists will decide to go the soul music route. I was thrilled when I discovered these two.
In the middle of the night Howard Tate is teaching a lesson that I need to learn. Whatever happened to second chances?

Goodbye Mr. Tate..
.taking your advice...getting love while I can.
Who else came here after watching reacher❤
@1blastman No, the composers are named at the end of this vid.
Had no idea that this was the original! Sorry but Janis did it justice
Sure, she did it justice, but it's like listening to someone's else's version of Hamlet or King Lear and having no idea the bard created it in the first place and saying "yeah,THIS (meaning Shakespeare's) version is pretty good, too."
@mistahdredd Amen!!!
@mistahdredd Yes mate, i don't get it, janis and howard both did this song full justice.
Jack Reacher🫠
Check out his first release, "Reaction"-- his version of Sam Cooke's Chain Gang (with arrangement by Lloyd Price) will blow you away, as will "What'll I Do?"
