Will check if you have any other videos with exercises to help practice these things, I feel like what I'm doing now isn't systematic or targeted to each of the different types discussed. I am only new to getting serious with singing and exploring techniques. Up until now I am still confused of what registers I use. I ve been praticing singing alone and over time, from being able to hit G5, I can now hit C6 which is my highest note. I don’t know if it is purely falsetto or mixed voice😅 I gained a lot from this topic! Thank you for sharing idol Caleb!

      Great question, I'll probably cover that in a future video. Whistle is a disconnected register again, and isn't achieved in a way that is similar to these ranges. It uses the falsetto vocal folds and is very unique in approach and tone!

    I feel embarrassed. I've been using terms incorrectly all along.
    If it's difficult for a well-trained singer to apply these labels, what chance does an inexpert listener have?
    I think I need to quit characterizing what I'm hearing by applying these terms at all. I'll simply connect to the music emotionally, enjoy virtuosity and let it be.
    I appreciate what you've done for us, Caleb. You've given us a chance to avoid displaying our ignorance. :-)

    • @CalebColesMusic
      @CalebColesMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I haven't ever noticed you using the terms incorrectly though. And vocal coaches even use the definitions a little differently. Classical teachers only usually teach one higher range that can be called either head voice or falsetto, and the terms are used completely interchangeably. That info is even given on wikipedia. I think it is a very bad definition, and all other teaching styles don't use it. But shows there isn't clear consensus. The definitions I gave I think are the most common and useful definitions, but by no means universal - although I wish they were!

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 3 роки тому

      @@CalebColesMusic The definitions you provided are pretty clear. *My* difficulty lies in the fact that applying these labels requires us to figure out exactly what is going on in the throat and mouth, physically. Larynx position, how much chord closure, how much air pressure... but advanced singers can *blend* the different categories of voice. And they do not furnish us with the observational tools we would need to conclude 'Aha, larynx position, air flow, resonance, soft palate position, that's head voice with a touch of nasality.'
      The truth is we don't know *what* the heck it is if we aren't a trained physician peering into the throat with our instruments while they're singing and making careful measurements.
      An advanced singer has a better chance than an amateur of nailing the right term to a vocal performance purely by the sound of it, but uncertainty can creep in there, too.
      Where does Mongolian throat-singing fit in? Heh.
      You've made me understand that I have been throwing these terms around without truly understanding them.
      And now I also know why I get a sense of cognitive dissonance when I listen to an opera singer apply the same terms - but she uses them differently. She was classifying what I had been calling 'mixed voice' as 'head voice,' among other things.
      This subject is sufficiently challenging without amateurs like me throwing around these terms carelessly. I now realize I was only adding to the general confusion. Got to quit doing that! :-)

    • @CalebColesMusic
      @CalebColesMusic  3 роки тому +1

      @@Urgelt Yeah I agree that we can never know precisely what is going on. Adding to that the differences in definitions it can be tricky. I still think though that using the term that best fits according to what we are hearing is appropriate, even for the regular untrained person, even if it might not be completely accurate. Generally people will understand what is meant, often people will refer to 'falsetto' what I'd call ;head voice' and vice verse. Or 'mixed voice' what is actually reinforced falsetto. But unless there is clear reason to correct (like it being the central point) as long as I can get what they are meaning then it is useful in that regard.

    I can't find my head voice, only the flageolet I accidentally found. It sounds exactly like your flageolet example.
    I can hit a very poor B1 in chest voice up to F4#, and go up to C6 in flageolet on a good day. But I can't find my head voice above F4# at all, not even Falsetto, anything above F4# is immediately either just shouting a G4-A4 in chest or pure flageolet which I'm finding impossible to control let alone blend at such a low register (F4#-D5). After D5 my flagolet is far more controlled. But I have no real desire or need to sing at such a high register. I'd love to find a falsetto above F4# so I can start working on my head voice.

  • @edwardmellett555
    @edwardmellett555 3 роки тому

    Hey Caleb! I'm singing with a pretty decent head voice these days, but when I try to move it up above D5, there's nothing there. I can squeeze out a kind of terrible noise up to F5 or G5 but I'm tensing everything and I know it's awful sound and awful style. I CAN get a whistle register noise that sounds better at G5, but only on the inhale at the moment. Does it take time for these notes to come? Or maybe not everyone can actually achieve them? I guess I want to know should I keep practicing or should I just stop!

  • @joelstephenson8017
    @joelstephenson8017 3 роки тому

    Is flageolet dangerous? I tend to get scared of doing it like you demonstrate in the vid, cause it feels intense, like I'm in some pressurised room or something. When I try and do it normally, if I sputter to it, and it works, it feels similar, but less pressurised. Should I let it get more pressurised? Cause I can't sustain flageolet the way I'm doing it now.

    • @CalebColesMusic
      @CalebColesMusic  3 роки тому

      To some degree it is, but because of the big difference in both vocal cord function and air flow it is never a completely clean transition. Learning to use Mixed Voice is the most effective way, because in mixed voice you can make it sound like a reinforced falsetto by going a little lighter on the tone, but keep it connected to your full voice / chest voice. Chest out my video on Secrets to a Powerful Mixed Voice for help with that :)

      Morissette uses Whistle Voice for those most high notes. That is different again. Whistle voice is completely disconnected and doesn't even use your true vocal cords to produce most of the sound. It uses the false vocal folds, and usually has more air and a different tone.
