MIT is really doing us, the high schoolers, a service by creating OCW. Not only do we learn, but we get to see how the classes are taught. This is the second best thing to going to MIT and visiting some classes. This is an opportunity found nowhere else.
When he said "from craft to science" @ 41:12 it really hit home for me. For close to a decade now, I've been a chemist by means of cooking, I've recently decided to go from practical to theory, enrolled in a community college and hope to get a degree in chemistry. Thanks for the series of lectures MIT.
Fantastic introduction! I've come to respect him and his logic, as well as his humor. He's really there for the success of the students, and the prosperity of everyone as a whole.
Professor is correct when he declares electro-chemistry the most important branch of chemistry; it explains the rest of subject; anything chemistry has its foundation in electro-chemistry; it even tells about magnetism... He is not joking at all; if only all students were studious they would perceive it, even if superficially.
By the way professor, science is not what "moves forward", learners of science do, although I understand your obvious connotation. Sciences are perfect, and reward the TRUE scientists with their secrets.
I learned to emulate may foreign accents over the years from my physics, EE and chemistry classes. Good way to learn dialects besides the subject matter :)
As an experimental Solid state Physicist its nice to see the subject tought from a Chemistry perspective. On a number of occasions I've worked with Chemists in the field and its staggering the differences in methods and thinking between an experimental physicist and a chemist... Though theoretical solid state physicists are an even tougher too converse productively with.
@MaximPodolsky i dont know the last time you went to college, but in the modern age you can't just sit in a local college and survey a course without being enrolled. It's called insurance. If something happens to you while your in that class they cant afford to take care of you.
Wow thanks a lot :). I will start watching these amazing lectures now. Thanks for providing these amazing videos for free online. It truly helps to learn from world class professors.
Ok the ending was sad. That is actually a perfect depiction of the elemental phases of matter. Earth being solid, Water being fluid, Air being gas and fire being plasma. I actually thought he was going to play a trick on the students but no...
@Robertamissoniluv I have a MBA from the Stockholm School of Economics. One of the better universities in Europe, when it comes to economics. For free, of course. The university earned me contacts around the world and job offers from all continents. Still, today I fly a stinky Hercules for the Israeli Air Force with a salary that is probably lower than a teachers. My point is: Do what you love. Love what you do. And "status" has nothing to do with passion.
This is exactly like University of Toronto....you can tell right away he studied at U of T...that's how they have always organized their courses. For the rest he is from Toronto just like myself and am a TA in europe now so that is cool.
your right my chemistry teacher had a thick accent i had to teach myself with the book. I got a B in the class.. i never self taught myself in my life. It was hell. However i got use to his accent in the end and didnt have to read the book XD.
i wish i had this stuff when i was in high school 10 years ago.. we had no wiki or youtube.. we had to deal with crumby AOL.. it offered nothing but dumb sound waves which even took a while to transfer.. How times have changed
@karnivaljoker I'm not Scottish, just studying in Scotland, so I'm not allowed to vote... but I think it's gonna be a suicide for Scotland to become independent, I suggest them to remain in the UK
That is because the older version has been archived to Dspace. Visit dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/75283 to see the materials. The reason it redirects to the new version is by request of the instructor.
i really didn't get past that point because that was rediculous. i can take that aluminum can to the recycling place and get money for it because it's an aluminum can. he said it's not an aluminum can. You know what they call people like that at the aluminum can place?
soooo... he's not giving homework as something you HAVE to do, but as something you should realize that you should do even though you don't Have to do it... but there is going to be a quiz on the homework that will affect your grade, so if you want to pass, you have to do your homework. the whole quiz thing seems to undermind the whole premis behind making homework something that you should do even though you don't have to do it. guess they don't teach logic at MIT. lol

EVERY LECTURER SHOULD BE LIKE HIM

This is the sort of prof that anyone who WANTS to learn--or who has a real interest in the material--will appreciate.
By the way professor, science is not what "moves forward", learners of science do,
although I understand your obvious connotation. Sciences are perfect, and reward the TRUE scientists with their secrets.
MIT really does have some legends as teachers… This guy would be an incredible high school teacher
I learned to emulate may foreign accents over the years from my physics, EE and chemistry classes. Good way to learn dialects besides the subject matter :)
Now you know why going to MIT is a good thing! You can get an interest based on the quality of the teacher! In other words this is a great course!
As an experimental Solid state Physicist its nice to see the subject tought from a Chemistry perspective. On a number of occasions I've worked with Chemists in the field and its staggering the differences in methods and thinking between an experimental physicist and a chemist... I can DO ANYTHING I want, I am the professor. Epic quote, but a dangerous one
I like this guy, he's cool and loves what he does
@MaximPodolsky

Oh my god I thought I had had good teachers before I watched this lecture and now my mind is utterly blown. MIT rocks so hard.

Glad you are able to drive EV shortly after your crouses! And we are continuing making batteries safer and with higher energy density!
yeah ur right, yale does it too with other stuff and with better quality video but shame they don't allow comments
We'd love to have gentlemen like this to say something to the people who control education down here in India.
Wow thanks a lot :). I will start watching these amazing lectures now. Thanks for providing these amazing videos for free online. It truly helps to learn from world class professors.

A lesson in captivating communication to be certain.
Super inspiring, this is what education supposed to be.
This is exactly like University of Toronto....you can tell right away he studied at U of T...that's how they have always organized their courses. For the rest he is from Toronto just like myself and am a TA in europe now so that is cool.
I think it's Basic SSC by Anthony West, by Wiley. Even if it isn't, that book is a good one. Worth trying.
your right my chemistry teacher had a thick accent i had to teach myself with the book. I got a B in the class.. i never self taught myself in my life. It was hell. However i got use to his accent in the end and didnt have to read the book XD.
I'm a solid state chemistry student. I'll try and view these all, but unfortunately the time is short.
@Robertamissoniluv where i study here in scotland all bachelor's degrees are for free ;)
Yeah, G-chem !!
I-chem is even better, o-chem and p-chem are tough though, would;ve done better if I didn't have to take so many other courses...
Best lecturer i've ever heard..
@LoveMattersMost I have to add David Goodstein@ Caltech, He is a Physicist
I love this guy.
i wish i had this stuff when i was in high school 10 years ago.. we had no wiki or youtube.. we had to deal with crumby AOL.. it offered nothing but dumb sound waves which even took a while to transfer.. How times have changed
I love the way he sounds a bit like Jeff Goldblum
@Inacio19082008 Santos, try 'The Mechanical Universe' video tapes on Physics if you need.it. They are on the Annanberg CPB project on the web site
Best Course Lecture EVER!!!!!
He looks like he's a great professor.
But how do you energize the batteries, don't you have to use gasoline? Seems like we will always be burning something for energy?
wow. only a genius professer at mit would bring shakespeare into chemistry.
I'm in high school right now. Just thinking about how I have to do this in the future makes me scared.
of course mit gets to upload long videos
Wonderful prof!!!! most wonder....
Take all the notes you can before WMG has the audio muted.
Didn't know that Robert Mitchum knew all about solid state chemistry.
inspiring role model
멋진 교수님이시네요.
Does anyone have any idea of what is the name of the book he mentions between 10:00 and 10:20?

Is this the same as general chemistry? I'm confused on the classifications of chemistry courses.
Is dis a 1st semister chem class
@tarrded
Ha so true
vital info starts pouring in from 5:00 onwards...
What is solid state chemistry?
i wanted to see the periodic table scene from ironman2 ... i am here now ... its a small world on youtube ...
Is this course for under graduates Or graduate level?
thanks

Also, Professor Sadoway reminds me of Kramer from Seinfeld xD
