taxing meat just push these alternatives because they have lower emissions doesnt say anything on their impact on longterm human health. Lower your emissions by eating highly processed veg protein sounds sinister.

Currently in the USA, our government heavily subsidizes and promotes animal products. Ending those would be the first step. Unlike a meat tax, it would get less opposition from consumers.

    • @someguy2135

Most plant based meat products are not particularly health promoting, unless you compare them to the animal products they replace. For example, the WHO found that red meat is a type 2A (probable) carcinogen, and that processed meat like bacon and deli meats are a type 1 carcinogen. Same category as asbestos exposure, and smoking tobacco.

I've no interest in plant based meats tbh. Already cutting my meat intake and switching what meat I do eat to those with lower carbon footprints.
But what I honestly want are better alternatives to meat rather than poor attempts at replication.
I've tried several plant alternatives and feel sorry for anyone who can't tell the difference.
Bowl of lentil soup, for example, far better than some of the fast food not-meats.

Kudos for significantly reducing! You are right that whole plant foods like lentils can be delicious. They are also more health promoting, and better for our environment. On the other hand, most people are addicted to eating burgers, etc. The plant based versions are better for health, and for our environment. Most prefer the taste, according to this blind taste test. 5 of 8 meat eaters preferred the Impossible burger over the one made of cow.

The taste of plant based meat alternatives varies quite a bit. You might want to watch some more taste test videos here on UA-cam to avoid buying a product you are disappointed with. If you are happy with whole plant foods, all the better. There are some great UA-cam channels that show how to make them taste amazing. I take advantage of ethnic cuisines for ideas. I replace the umami (savory) nature of meat with plant based umami like mushrooms, miso, nutritional yeast, seaweed (like nori sheets) and pasta sauce.

I won't adopt plant based meat sub until it's actually healthy. Currently it's mostly processed and salt laden. Meat, even red meat with all the fat, can be part of a very healthy diet. My other concern is the insistence that plant based is better environmentally. There are operations that raise cattle in an environmentally sustainable manner on lands that can not support crop yields. It's a mixed bag for me and a hard no for now. I just don't trust it or the companies pushing it.

    • @kaiserblazer

Meat is heavily subsidised. Give those subsidies to arable farmers and watch the price of imitation meat plummet. It's a false economy to artificially lower the price of a burger how we do. Oxford University also found that calorie-for-calorie, wholefoods, plant-based diets are cheaper than omnivorous diets. It only becomes more expensive because plant-based meats don't have the subsidies meats do, which is easily resolvable, as I said. So... no... consumers wouldn't have to pay more to save the planet. We'd just need legislators to grow some balls and do what's right for food production. But the animal farmers would lose their s*** cos they live off subsidies.

    • @someguy2135

Every time people buy plant based meat instead of animal products, the price of them will trend downwards. Economies of scale show that larger numbers of purchases lower prices. Until then, whole plant foods will save you money and are better for your health.
