Great timing! Just finished Part 2 yesterday 🙂 I just love Kaladin the therapist! So heartbreaking that they get invaded just as he was starting to get a handle on things. I still think his 4th Ideal is going to be something about protecting himself so he can be able to protect others. Thank you! I think you’re onto it with his fourth ideal, that seems like the most logical phrase. I wonder if we’ll get it in this book? I hope so! Part 3, here we go :)
I feel like a contributor to Kaladin's depression is Lirin, Kaladin's father. He lays the groundwork for Kaladin needing to save people, watch over his brother, and keep people safe by being a peacemaker. Kaladin is a sensitive person and forms his persona around that. He often says he can't let go even though his father says he can and Kaladin must learn to. Yet, Lirin is never proud of anything Kaladin does unless it is what the father wants Kaladin to do. Sensitivity to doing what Kaladin has been taught is right, his father's constant disappointment, and Kaladin not understanding with his skills and talents he can not always succeed, it depresses him. His mind can not reconcile reality and Lirin plays into that and makes it worse. Kaladin may need someone who is not awestruck by him but acceptance and pride by his father would go along way to healing him. Currently he fights a battle only he can win with a foot nailed to the ground by his dad.
Thank u for the video. I really like Adolin, he is such an edgedancer. I cant wait for his powers to come in future books- i hope. 😊 Its amazing that Brandon put the edgedancer charakteristic with Him from the very begining…❤
Regarding the Odium's formatting I think you're right. When he speaks in caps to Moash it's to present himself as a god, but when Odium speaks with Taravangian he treats him like a nearly-equal. This may be connected to what Sazed writes in the letter, how we need to differentiate between a shard and a vessel. To conclude, I think the caps are Odium, whereas the normal text is Rayse
The reason why Kaladin and Lift can still have some power is because one of their surges is adheasion which is the primary surge of Honor. @@ScribblyDoodle I just reread my comment and wrote it wrong / confusing but you're right. it's been a while. My theory about adhesion being unaffected was only for Kaladin, and my theory for Lift being awake was because of the connection to cultivation.
I hadn’t noticed the different way it is written when Odium talks to different people! Very interesting! And Adolin is really growing on me! I need to know more about his relationship with Maya and Gallant! And Shallan too I guess! Haha
My son was born the week before the book released, so my reading is significantly slower than usual. Just finished part 2, and I love watching your recaps after each part. Feels like talking about the story with a friend.
The part with Shallan that I found so well-written was when Adolin steals her away and takes her to the outcrop in Shadesmar where they look up into the sky and see the star spren flying and Shallan is suddenly so captivated by her passion that Veil and Radiant aren't mentioned for the rest of the scene. It just seemed like such a bitter-sweet reprieve from her struggle with her mental health where she was so captivated by the creature in front of her and wanted to draw it.
Also my suspect for the "spy" is Veil with Shallan, like you said, being unaware of what her split personality has been doing behind her back. But I feel like Pattern is being suspicious because he has been with Veil/Shallan when she's been going behind her (own?) back to communicate with Mraize through the cube. That's my theory anyways, I can't wait to find out
Thanks for this. I'm coming into book 2 after some break. I needed a refresh on book 1 stuff. This helped alot. Loved your insights on the font difference seen from Odium
ya know I was wondering if that was Wits flute as well...hmmmm. I cant wait for the Gallant reveal either, something is up with that horse! lol. Also Adolin and Maya, Perfection
Just finished Part II and I’m thinking “Formless” is the spy. I liked getting more info about the “enemy” powers. Like how they can only access 1 surge when the Radiants can each access 2 surges. I find it interesting that Raboniel tells Venli that Adhesion is “not a real surge”. Then when Raboniel corrupts The Sibling and all the Radiants in the Tower lose their powers and blackout, Kaladin can still use Adhesion, but not gravitation. Its also interesting that somehow the Heavenly Ones’ powers are seriously weakened when they get wet or are around water.
This was not only helpful by having someone read along section by section, but I love the insight and speculation you share with it. It gets me even more excited and love this series deeper! 💛👍🎉 Thank you! Look forward to more videos.
The awesome thing with the fauna in Roshar is that they have "evolved" to use the power of the spren bond for their needs. (For example: The Ryshadium bond with musicspren which grants them higher intelligence, strength and such.) That's what I really love about Roshar's worldbuilding! IT MAKES SENSE! If there was a possibility for animals to bond with lesser spren that gave them an advantage in life, there would absolutely be animals that did that!
I wish I'd been watching your videos while I was reading rather than afterwards! Also, I'm with you - I'm not sure what book they were reading to call it slow! And I also agree, lift is the BEST. I can't wait to hear your take on party five.
There is so much I missed reading this book, so I really appreciate your discussions! I love Pattern too, he's so adorable and weird. The Lirin/Kaladin scenes broke me. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on part 3!
You are right about how dark Kaladin's journey in this book is dark... I found myself having to put the book down for over a month because I felt it affecting me negatively in this tough times of Covid and seclusion from others. After some time, with longer days, the story did not seem as dark to me. That is not a criticism, but an acknowledgement of how well it was written to impact me so hard.
Yes, I also loved Teofil! I especially loved the dynamic between him and Navani, how they respected each other. And I totally agree that Shallan/Veil/Radiant was sooo interesting in this part! It's what has me most intrigued at this point.
Hey man! Love your videos. Your positivity and enthusiasm will keep me coming back for all of your uploads. It is super refreshing to watch videos like this; where it is a hype discussion type video rather than a critique of the section! Thank you for the content and keep up the good work. :)
Ah, thanks dude! That’s super nice of you to say. These books are just so enjoyable and whilst there are some criticisms I have, the positive outweigh them SO much. I can’t help but feel the hype :) Thanks again for the really nice comment!
Correct me if I am misremembering but at some point Raboniel talks about how what she intended to do to disable the radiants would not work on more powerful radiants. At the time I definitely thought she was talking about ones who had sworn the 3rd ideal. Unless I am missing something I really think there is nothing more to it than that. Thoughts?
I know everyone loves to say frick Moash and all that, while I totally agree, at the same time I am still deep down going to be wary about putting him 100% in the Evil box. The better the antagonist, the better the protagonists have to be. And if there's anyone who can write an insane and impossible redemptive arc, it's Brando Sando. Like Wheel of Time says "No man can stand in the Shadow so long that he cannot find the Light again," I bet Brando would love to flex his writing muscles by building the F Moash band up and up and up to only just pull the absolute mother of a carpet from underneath them! Could you just imagine. Not saying I think it's for sure going to happen; I'm just thinking it could be, maybe. Edit: Also I think Syl's brain patterns function quite a lot like some ADHDs! Amazing on Sanderson getting so many superb POVs with his talented outside help!
Oh my goodness, the Shallan character work, yes! I am so impressed with Brandon Sanderson’s work here. My ex was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder and over the course of our marriage I was introduced to 18 different personalities. The way Shallan switches and has trouble with the host (Shallan) and the potential new alter emerging... I felt like I was reading about a real person with D.I.D. early in their journey of healing. So familiar to my real life and yet so rare (non-existent?) in literature. I feel like I can finally talk about my life as a spouse to someone with multiple personalities and point to characters in a book for reference. I also feel incredibly validated by your enthusiasm for the character. One reason I stayed with my spouse even when it became unsustainable and unhealthy for me to do so was the total fascinating with their inner world. To see your enthusiasm for understanding and knowing more about Shallan feels familiar and encouraging to me. Thank you for doing these videos!
Thanks for sharing! It's great that Sanderson's representation is so authentic that you're able to relate your experience to it - just shows how fantastic he is!
@@LostinDiscovery I love your theory of Shallan being the spy herself. It is such a real thing for folks who are multiple. I had several experiences trying to help my ex solve the mystery of who did something only to find out later that it was one of their own hidden alters (personalities/identities). Sometimes I made for disaster, but sometimes it was hilarious, too.
The text change in Odium's speech is meant to show the tone (and sound quality). All caps is how the Stormfather speaks, so with Moash I am guessing he use a more thunderous, loud and perhaps stately voice for the sake of facade. The regular text is the the more human side.
I finished the book and decided to watch over these and it's fun to see where you've predicted something and I'm like, yeah he was pretty close there. And just a couple misses but it's great to see how your mind works. Gonna watch the other 3 videos now :)
Love watching these as I read along! I thought part 2 was great. I agree that Shallan is probably the spy without the reader knowing. I think this other persona could have instructed pattern to use the cube. I love Kaladin trying to help and connect with the other broken men. I was struck by the font changes for odium too. Very interesting! Pumped for part 3
Do you think there's any connection between Shallan's hair changing color through her radiant abilities, and the way hair color changes within the royal bloodline in Warbreaker?
If you could do a video on the over map of where things are and occur for those the do audible only that can't easily look at the in book resources I think it would be a popular video across the board and maybe build 1 video per book . Thanks
I think Kal was affected leds because he knew the words to the fourth ideal. He hadn't accepted them yet, so he was somewhere between the third and fourth ideal. At one point one of the fused suggests that maybe he has sworn the fourth ideal and that is why he is affected less than the other surgebinders.
i know it may sound weird but i really think the spy is veil of radiant. there is actual foreshadowing for it. Or maybe its just my tunnel vision doing its work haha. Thaks for these videos, they are fun to watch after finishing a part. Edit: i guess im not the only one.
We know that Kaladin was pretty much at the foruth Ideal. He knows the words but he just didn't swear it. We can already see this in how much more Syl has changed over time. Her appearance has more mass and deeper colour and she can feel more emotions and such.
ashlinmario sequeira there was a quick mention about those who were “more Invested” being unaffected... I wonder if that has to do with more than Ideals or radiant levels. I wonder whether Lift is unaffected because she’s been touched by Cultivation (or so it seems). Does she somehow pull Investiture directly from the Spiritual Realm?
@@philvogelfilms well the ones at higher ideals will be more invested. I think that's a fair conclusion. Lift is an exception to every norm so who knows. Like she can even use progression even when the suppression is up so who knows
ashlinmario sequeira good point! Also Kaladin could use Adhesion but not Gravitation... I wonder if there’s more to being “Invested” than just Radiant Ideals.
Amazing video as always. Few things I like to mention: I agree, Raboniel is the best villain yet. No spoilers but her character even gets better later in the book. I think you are probably thinking correctly in regards to different fonts for Odium speech. I think Odium sees Tarvangion as someone who he can talk to and someone who understands. Lastly, are you caught up with all things Cosmere? Because I think you should discuss epigraphs as well. It would be nice to see what's your theories about it. Can't wait for the next part. Keep it up!👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks man! I've read Mistborn era 1 and Warbreaker. With those I've been able to find a bunch of connections and am aware of the basics of Elantris and White Sand so I've seen little clues here and there. I think I'd like to do a seperate video on epigraphs and Cosmere connections. Really appreciate the support as always dude.
@@LostinDiscovery Yeah the epigraphs in this part were so juicy. Like GG. Brandon casual dropping 4 Shards just like that. But yeah I think a seperate video for epigraphs and / or Cosmere connections and Worldhoppers would be cool.
@@LostinDiscovery Mistborn era 2 was so jarring to me, I have only read the first 2 (4 and 5) because I just couldn't get into it. I really really really hope when we move into Stormlight era 2 that its not as jarring and the whole magic system and beautiful world he's created doesn't just fall apart. Id be super down for more in depth cosmere wide connections. Just give plenty of spoiler warnings ⚠️
@@cbob213 It's only jarring if you think all Mistborn books as a single series which they aren't. Era 1 and 2 are different series with entirely different feel to them set in a same world. Also don't forget there are 300 year gap between those two and the whole world of Mistborn completely changed at the end of HoA.
Super cool vid! I’m getting through ROW slowly, so this was really nice as it helped sort of remind me of bits of part 2 I read like three weeks ago hahah Guess I need to hurry up a bit. Also, nice critica thinking. All too often I feel I get swept away in these books and miss the hints Sanderson lays out.
I lost myself and finished the book already ahhh, so I'll have to be careful responding to these videos (I don't wanna spoil anyone). I just wanna say that I love all of the world building done in the book, the world really got enriched in ways I didn't think possible haha
your right , rabonial is the best fused thus far. leshway is pretty cool as well but robonial is still the best. particularly since i have finished the book lol
@@LostinDiscovery Yeah, you're right. I just went back and looked at it. Since Harmony is a new shard vessel, he and Hoid don't properly know each other. Apparently Hoid knows the other vessels from their time before they held the shards. Interesting that he turned down the chance to hold one. He also seems to greatly distrust Rayse, although Harmony is of the mind that the power itself is far more dangerous than the vessel. Very interesting stuff.
Hei, I am a recent subscriber and I've looked for a channel like this for so long. Can you maybe make a video about Shallan. I've read some forum threads about her and there seems to be a rift about her character, you either love her or hate her. I personally hate her and I dread her POVs. Maybe mainly because she likes to boast about her being ok or maybe she likes to pretend she is ok. I think only Adolin and Kaladin know of her troubles. Yet she seems to keep going deeper into darkness and me as a reader I'm not getting any pay off from her and investing in her story. Maybe that's why I hate her character. What do you think of her?
I am not a big Shallan fan either. I was bored by her storyline for most of book 1 and was annoyed by everyone constantly falling all over themselves to compliment her witty comebacks. Especially since I don’t find her all that remarkably witty. I would groan when I saw a chapter from her POV. I started to like her a bit in book 2 as I found her more interesting and empathetic while delving into her backstory. But then went back to disliking her again in book 3. I thought she became very selfish and irresponsible. Now I’m annoyed by her DID and the fact that she is telling so many lies and hiding important things, even from Adolin. That poor man is way too good for her. I just finished Part 2. I’m actually looking forward to Shallan’s chapters though because I want to see what happens to Adolin in Lasting Integrity and I’m hoping we find out that Pattern is NOT the spy!
@@shananika Yes, exactly! Why so many lies. Adolin is her husband, she is supposed to trust him. Especially for the fact that so many times he has proved that he loves her and he doesn't really care about her past. And like I said, it's very hard to feel empathy for her since she doesn't seem to get better, she just creates new personas. Veil, Radiant, and now Formless seems to become something real. Like stop. For real. I'm really sorry, I fucking loves these books. Ever since I finished reading A Dance with Dragons from R.R. Martin I've looked for a series to be kinda like my rebound book, and the Stormlight Archive does a very good job of it. But Shallan is just...awful
I've just started part 3 and so far I don't get why people think that this is the worst Stormlight book. The first two parts were top notch, capped by a mini sanderlanche, and I've heard that the ending is great, so that only leaves a small part of the story that MIGHT be slow or uninteresting
Just looking at the video thumbnail and thought.. Can we all agree, in a live action Stormlight series we need Anya Taylor-Joy to play Shallan (Beth Harmon in the Queen’s Gambit)
Personally, in this book everything that was not Urithiru felt less interesting, and sometimes too long for what it delivers. Maybe in part cause Navani, Leshwi, Venli, Listener-scientist-lady and Pursuer were so well done and fascinating. The tower felt creepy in its corrupted state, and I missed more down to earth/high stakes/less magical times of The Way of Kings or Words of Radiance.
There was something really special about the down to earth setting on Way of Kings but I am enjoying how things are changing and becoming more grand. I think it'll make going back to WoK on re-reads even better :)
Yeah. I can see that. Dalinar and the crew that goes with him doesn't do a whole lot. And those parts are mostly introspection and set up for the next book. But the pay off and all the crazy things that happen in part 5 is totally worth it.
I get the heat, Brazil is insanely hot right now! I love dumb Taravangian, not so much smart Taravangian. I have a theory about Shallan and the treason: I believe Patter is the traitor BECAUSE I think Shallan killed her first spren; that cryptic dead eye fits the timeline - and I believe that is the tragedy she won't face. (Talking about my impressions after the second part). I didn't miss Dalinar pov at all in part 2. I don't like the holier than thou person he has changed in to, and his judgemental side is really annoying. Navani is my absolute favorite so far! She has so much on her plate, and remains elegant and amazing. I'm loving all the bold feminine characters like Navani, Leshwi, Raboniel. All very intelligent and strong, I'm loving it! I cried my eyes out seen Kal dealing with depression, and Sanderson's depiction of mental illness is really good. That scene with Moash playing the role of the suicidal thoughts, oh my, was so powerful! He helping the others, the therapy he created, so amazing! Lirin is insufferable and I can't stand he suggesting subservience. Being rejected by your father while trying to save the world must be terrible. Loved Dabbid having a spotlight! I think that summarizes my thoughts 😂
Oh my god, your theory about Shallan is amazing and if that's true... wow! Yes it seems Dalinar has changed quite a bit but that has made me miss his POV, I really want to hear what's going on in his head. The female characters in this series are so on point, Navani is so wonderful and I know her and Raboniel are going to discover so much working together. Kaladin and his dad.. oh man, you pretty much summed up my thoughts there. Kaladin will always be the character I feel most attached to in this series. Thank you for the amazing comment! I loved hearing your thoughts and theories :)
@@LostinDiscovery Thanks! I'll be here to talk part 3 ☺️ There's no Shallan's pov on part 3, so I have to wait a little longer to see.
The regular text is the the more human side.
ashlinmario sequeira interesting how Odium changes depending on who he’s talking to
I love your insight!!!
Thanks!
Another great Brandon Sanderson video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks mate :)
I felt the same way when they hinted Pattern might be a bad guy. "you better not do this, or I will be very upset."
I finished the book and decided to watch over these and it's fun to see where you've predicted something and I'm like, yeah he was pretty close there. And just a couple misses but it's great to see how your mind works. Gonna watch the other 3 videos now :)
Awesome stuff mate 👍
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on everything as things continue to progress
Thanks man! Can’t wait to keep reading :)
I am really enjoying these little talks. Keep them coming
I’m glad, will do!
Late to the party but loving these!
I love Pattern!! I was so devastated when I read the part about him being the spy!!
This channel has became one of my favorites. Much love bro
Thanks man, that means a lot!
So glad you’re enjoying the read along! Cool to see that someone else had pretty similar thoughts while reading. Thanks for joining :)
Do you think there's any connection between Shallan's hair changing color through her radiant abilities, and the way hair color changes within the royal bloodline in Warbreaker?
I just finished the book and I'm looking at your thoughts
It was amazing I can't wait for the next one
Few things I like to mention:
I agree, Raboniel is the best villain yet.
That was 🤯
@@LostinDiscovery Mistborn era 2 was so jarring to me, I have only read the first 2 (4 and 5) because I just couldn't get into it.
Could the Ryshadium be like the Returned but instead of Breaths feed off of the Stormlight in Roshar?
Super cool vid! I’m getting through ROW slowly, so this was really nice as it helped sort of remind me of bits of part 2 I read like three weeks ago hahah
Guess I need to hurry up a bit.
Also, nice critica thinking. All too often I feel I get swept away in these books and miss the hints Sanderson lays out.
Thank you! It's nice to take time with massive books like this :)
@@LostinDiscovery yes, it def. helps with the passing of quarantine here in the usa!
I lost myself and finished the book already ahhh, so I'll have to be careful responding to these videos (I don't wanna spoil anyone). I just wanna say that I love all of the world building done in the book, the world really got enriched in ways I didn't think possible haha
The difference in caps letters with odium is interesting
What did you think of the deadeye cryptic that's apparently only 10 years old...
I would say lift seeing cultivation is confirmed she directly describes her not the midnight mother
Moash had an after image too after killing Roshone
The dark eyes commander was awesome I agree
your right , rabonial is the best fused thus far. leshway is pretty cool as well but robonial is still the best. particularly since i have finished the book lol
Question : In this section, the chapter intros are clearly Harmony (from Scadrial). But who is he talking to? Hoid? Or someone else?
I believe he’s writing to Hoid. I think there’s another letter from him in Oathbringer as well.
What’s the deal with Renarin!! The eternal Stormlight question
“Don’t you just love that Moash is in the story?!” He says......
No, no I’m not glad! especially after a certain scene towards the end......
Lift is the best, not sure how people dont like her
Just looking at the video thumbnail and thought.. Can we all agree, in a live action Stormlight series we need Anya Taylor-Joy to play Shallan (Beth Harmon in the Queen’s Gambit)
That would be so damn amazing
I'll be here to talk part 3 ☺️
There's no Shallan's pov on part 3, so I have to wait a little longer to see.
What I love about Sanderson's books is that I'm constant surprised. I think it's going in a direction and he changes everything. Most outcomes are not predictable, and that's why he is my favorite author ♥️
I really hope he finds a publisher I'm Brazil so I can read in portuguese and have all this beautiful books on my shelf!
Am I the only Stormlight fan who can't stand Shallan? Honestly I find all of her chapters a slog. I hope Sanderson puts us all out of her misery.
audio book pronouce it Jah anat
Hard J
Guess Sanderson has some dad issues
Adolin
Shallan
Kaladin
Lift (only talks about her mother)
