I mean, The Doctor and his companions created more paradoxes than they could count before and after this episode, so this is the episode that feels out of place (still good tho)
They're not supposed to always show up. I'm so tired of people saying "where are the reapers why weren't they during this time or that time" guys it's explained in Father's Day what went wrong. Rewatch it and please stop asking why the Reapers didn't show up when there were two Amy Ponds or when so and so touched their future self or whatever
This story packed quite the punch! The choice for the grandfather paradox was also neat considering the series was rebooted and this was a good starter into the bendy rules of time travel in Doctor Who, because it's the most common paradox people think about. I think it was perhaps the most perfect pitch for that first series. It just fit like a glove. Simple but very effective. I think Paul Cornell succeeded in making a very intemporal story, possibly my favourite of this season. For once, the Doctor had to keep up with a companion's problem and it's not him who saves the day. In fact, he's the tragic loss. It's not even the companion who has to make the tough call to fix her mistake. It's her dad. And the thing is, it's not the first time Pete Tyler would put himself on the line to do what is right rather than what is easy. Without knowing, Pete was burning up a sun just to say goodbye. And that... makes this story so incredibly powerful in my eyes.
This story also added a new layer to the First Doctor story "The Aztecs", as we see that Tlotoxl was right for the wrong reasons when he maintained that if they heeded "Yetaxa's" command to abolish human sacrifice the results would be cataclysmic.
Definitely one of the best of Series 1 . Would love if somehow the concept of the Reapers could be developed, because it's a neat idea, which in the grand scheme of things seems out of place, considering the multiple time interferences in the show.
Chris's father was diagnosed with cancer not long before this production block. Father's Day is one of his favourite scripts, and I can see why. Pete feels like everyone's dad.
Amazing episode! Shaun Dingwall's performance is amazing in this episode, sure, the writting is the brilliant thing on this episode, and of course, Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, just wonderful! :D
This episode is one of the reason Rose is my favourite companion, she's written so realistically. Like seriously did Clara or Bill ever even once consider going back to save their parents? It's just never brought up in the modern series
I'd say Rose was probably just the dumber one of them. Sure, a great person and companion and all that, but she definitely was one of the stupider companions the Doctor has had (not including one-offs). And it's not like Clara and Bill didn't ask the Doctor about paradoxes and such. Rose didn't even ask what could happen if she tried to save her dad, she just took advantage of the Doctor and only really went with him because he mentioned "travels in time". Sure, Rose was realistic. But people are so different that you can't really say a character is unrealistic unless they're acting completely contradictory to themselves. Even then that can be explained. Like how Clara was a control freak? She's just some random person with that personality trait that got connected with the Doctor because of Missy.
Clara tried to force the Doctor to save Danny, so this doesn't really hold up. Plus, that's actually a bonus for them having the emotional maturity needed to move on with their lives. Not saying that's bad about Rose's writing - characters should have flaws - but still.
Steven Moffat doesn't seem to care about family as much as RTD did. Brian Williams was never mentioned again in the show proper after Rory was trapped in the past, and Clara's family were never thought of again after she died in a sci-fi way in a secret location. For all we've been shown, her family still think she's missing.
The Reapers (That's what these bat creatures are called) succeeded in the one thing the Daleks, Cybermen, the Master, etc constantly failed to do. Killed the Doctor!
Series 1 is so dark. Doctor Who has always had light and dark moments but the darker moments in Series 1 always felt particularly heavy. I mean the whole resolution to this episode is Pete having to commit suicide. I wish that sort of gravitas would be in modern Doctor Who
What a coincidence! Yesterday, I was watching Father's day for the first time, and the next day (today), this was uploaded! Edit: I also just noticed I watched it the day before it's original broadcast without knowing! EVEN MORE OF A COINCIDENCE!!!!
I never understood how the reapers were able to vanish the doctor like that when he is obviously older than the church itself yet they couldn’t even get through the walls?
New paradox's add more rips in time and space leaving gaps the Reapers could use as doorways. As to why vanish they are the literal being that can fix time by essentially absorbing things that shouldn't be to otherwise revert reality. him being old meant that he might be enough to perhaps keep them from attacking. He was clearly wrong.
One question: The Doctor made many Paradoxes, how come these paradox bats didn’t appear any where else throughout the other Doctor’s timeline. There is only one answer for this: It’s confusing, Timey-wimey spaceywacey...ssstuff!
Davies-era Doctor: You messed with time? I'm justifiably furious and I'm considering dropping you as my companion. Moffat-era Doctor: You messed with time? Well okay! Also you're perfect in every way and can do no wrong.
Now I'm wondering why the reapers didn't show up for The Waters of Mars or to freeze all TARDIS's on Gallifrey and make Clara return through the extraction chamber.
Because Time managed to fix itself in the Waters of mars and the Timelords had always been able to keep the Reapers in check so they probably knew not to attack Gallifrey
Incredible isn’t it. The kids could bring back their father - and KEEP him alive (Doctor Widow and the Wardrobe xmas ep). Nothing in the world changed when he came back either. Father’s Day: massive time rift, monsters eating everything, Pete has to die again. Biggest tut in Dr Who history 🙄

I always kinda wished these guys would make a return appearance. However they looked, the idea behind them was fan-fricking-tastic.
They are a really good monster, however they are very much a one and done. Another story with them would just be treading over the same water
They don't exist anymore probably due to being associated with paradoxes
