New 2004 C5 owner here. Good video. I've watched a few of them over the recent past before and after purchasing the car. Now I know where my fuel filter is not. I did think it was on the frame rail somewhere. Has it EVER been changed, hmm?
Just purchased a Black on Black 50th Anniversary Corvette Coupe (2003) with only 70k original miles. The C5 is an absolute dream of a car. Low, lean, aggressive yet elegant & poised. Even at a standstill the car looks like its in motion. A timeless classic & true to the American sports car.
@RyRy You have got the most desirable year, except the 50th Anniversary Corvette came standard with the Magnetic ride suspension Do you think it will be worth about 3K for 4 shocks installed when the time comes? I was looking for a black 50th Anniversary Corvette, but maybe now I think I will just get a black 2003 without the Magnetic ride suspension, and the premium price for a 50th Anniversary Edition?
@@EXCELSIOR_INC I plan on keeping the car indefinitely so whatever it needs I will replace in time. Add some upgrades here & there but it will look predominantly stock. A nice weekender & Spring/Summer vehicle. And the more you replace and upgrade the car the longer it will last. Its an investment that only you can determine what to do or not to do. C5 all the way!
Just purchased a 2002 yesterday and I admit I was one of those watching your vids without being subscribed. I have remedied that. You and C&S really helped in making the decision and although you and he differ on your conclusions, for me, the information was invaluable. Thanks again.
As a former 2002 C5 vert owner of 14-years, I really enjoyed your analysis. I found it very informative, factual and balanced. My only quibble is that the oil consumption issues were resolved by GM in time for the 2002 model year, so I sort of felt like it should have been a tie between '02 and '03 for the "best" C5 model year. When i sold mine, I had put about 110k glorious miles on it. No garage queens allowed around here. Sold it for a very fair $11k and the new owner was thrilled. The original 5-layer top was still in excellent condition as was the rest of the car that had been garaged and well maintained. I always felt like I had a race car in my garage.
Got a tip for you. If you maintance active ride control warning comes on constantly check your suspension, ball joints , rear tow adjustment (ball joint) and get it aligned. Mine went crazy for 3 yrs until I fixed it yesterday. Like magic, it turned off.
I bought a '97 C5 about 3 years ago $9k. Since then had the tyranny rebuilt $2400, front shocks were already replaced with standard. I get a check traction control message, but just hit the reset button. I drive it almost daily, has 227,000 miles on it now, still runs great and is super fun to drive!
I got rid of those overpriced over rated shocks too. This guy DOES NOT know what he's talking about. I hope I'm not blocked for saying so. All you need to do is install some type of capacitor and delete it from the computer. I know because I did it!
Just picked up my 97 for 9500. Had to repair a few small things to get her inspected (rear tires, horn) but she runs great, still turns heads, and is so much fun to drive
I bought a 2000 year Corvette for my husband for $8000 it had a 100000 miles on it and to this day it has 240000 still going strong just have to rebuild the tranny automatic transmission which my husband is doing now love the C5 and thank you for your videos
After longing for a c8 and giving up after the Ridiculous mark ups, production delays and constraints, I decided on getting a Used c5 and I’m very happy it has alot more room to recline
I have a 2000 C5 coupe. I have had the car for 10 years and have had very few mechanical issues. The car still runs great and thanks for your video. Being up in age this car has plenty enough performance for me. Its still a great car with class.
Hey, about a year ago I bought a 1998 C5 with 80k miles on it. (I got it for less than $9k!!!). I had a honda S2000 which you may know have been going up in value like crazy. I sold the honda and got the vette because I wanted to REALLY learn about cars. I had never done anything other than basic fluid changes in my life and the LS platform is cheap and easy to get parts for and learn about. The money I got from the honda came a long way with being able to mod the vette. It still took MONTHS of research but I put a cam in, LS7 lifters (and full valve train overhaul), vararam intake, full exhaust, replaced every pump, and rebuilt mostly every system in the front end of the car etc. I did it mostly for reliability sake as I want to go to the track and really put it through it's paces and the idea of dropping a valve due to my 23 year old valve springs was concerning me. ANYWAY I always see you responding to people's comments saying thanks for taking the time to comment when you don't have anything to really say back. You and other C5 youtubers like BeezyBuilds and Chris have given me a wealth of knowledge and I would finally like to say thank you. Everything I have done would not have been possible without you guys as the forums only go so far or aren't accurate. I've reached out and DM BeezyBuilds fairly regularly as he was more into road circuit track stuff like I want to be (even though he has a civic now haha) so now is your turn. So again thank you for getting my car off jack stands after 8 months and getting my wife off my back. (She is very supportive, but sharing a car for 8 months was getting OLD haha).
@@californiaantkeeper c5 vette's can last 500k+ if you treat them right, it really just depends on how meticulous you are about preventative maintenance.
Holy crap my doppelganger! I too had an s2000 AP2 and sold it like an idiot... Biggest mistake of my life. But now I own a 04 z06 for almost 3 years and ill never make that mistake again!
When I bought my C5 7 years ago, I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that I wanted a 2003-2004. I bought a low mileage 2004. I don't have mag control shocks, so that eliminates that problem, so the only thing that I have to deal with is the fuel issue. So far, knock on wood, that has not been an issue, but I will watch it and keep it in mind. Thanks for the information.
Ya , I screwed up and got an 04. Electrical nightmare. Magnetic shocks too. I bought aftermarket regular shocks. My mechanic said he can work around the computer. The fact they put the fuel filter in the tank is utterly stupid. It was already a good design.
Thank you, I'm always going to give it to you straight and I always try to say if it's my opinion or if I think it's fact. And at the end of the day I'm one of those people that can agree to disagree and have a cordial conversation about anything! Thanks for your comment much appreciated!!!!
😢I just purchased my first Corvette on 4/27/24. It is a beautiful 2002 torch red convertible with the camel roof and interior. I cannot drive a stick shift any more due some health issues but the automatic is fine for this old man of 63. I have been watching your videos for almost 2 years now and they were very helpful in making my purchase. The car just turned 97,000 miles but has been garaged and meticulously cared for. My dream is to drive it up the PCH in California one day with the top down! I picked it up for about $14,000. Thanks again for the very informative videos! Glenn
Since a kid, I’ve been collecting corvette memorabilia and apparel as it was my dream car. Last week I finally got my c5- an ‘02 black on black 6 speed with 38k miles for get this… $16,500. Thanks for making the video as it helped me narrow down the years.
i bought my 01 c5 z06 last year because of last vid. 10k miles later still running good. and driving like i stole lol and no oil buring problem luckily.
Well, the older they get and the longer you own them the more likely issues will pop up. That having been said you probably take care of your stuff too which is the right way!
I love people with demonstrable depth and breadth of knowledge who publish concise, factual information in an easy to understand package. The perfect trifecta! This video earned you my subscription. I am shopping for a C5 Z06 to dedicate to track use. I'll search your library for Z06-specific info.. Prior to this video, I had focused in on 02-03 mostly due to the Magneride issue (I have a Tech 2), with 03 being the ideal thanks to rolling upgrades and 01 being a possibility if I happen to find a bargain. Thanks for the great info.
I got a C5 Z06 that I to thought I would use for "dedicated track use". Now im just scared to run it since they are already kinda expensive and going up in value, also 405hp rwd in a 90's wedge isn't something to scoff at. Do yourself a favor and get a base C5 6 speed and spend the savings on goodies. Gonna be a lot cheaper and hurt A LOT less if you wreck it.
@@CrossWindsPat I track a 600HP Shelby Cobra that weighs 1,000 lbs less than the C5... if you think 405HP in a 90's wedge is a lot to handle, try 600HP in a 60's roadster!😄 I did end up buying a fully caged, completely custom base C5 with a 585HP LS3. It is heaven on earth.
In 2009 I bought an 03 Z06 with 15,000 miles for $7,500. The catch was it was totaled with rear frame damage. After removing the body and replacing the damaged frame section, I installed the body of a Cavalier coupe. (Why?…., why not?). I’ve had a blast with it. One thing you didn’t mention, some 03 and 04’s had defective fuel tanks. The necks were weak and would crack and leak. My VIN was luckily not on the list. Love your videos, you are so professional! Great work.
I've owned a 01 Z06 for 14 years. Only a callaway cold air kit for a mod. The car definitely has electronic issues that's for sure. Otherwise for the money can't beat it. Love it. She roars!!!!
I have an 03 Z06 with 16,000 miles I bought for $7,500. Only catch, it was totaled. After removing the wrecked body and fixing the damaged frame, I installed a Cavalier body. Been having a blast! You didn’t mention the fuel tank issues of the 03-04 years. There were some tanks that had weak necks that cracked and leaked. Luckily my vin was not on the list. Love your videos.
I thought about including that defect, but it was thinking most if not all of those have been repaired by now, and if they hadn't broken they probably wouldn't.
My husband just purchased for me a mother’s day/birthday gift…a C5 2002 red convertible what I’ve always wanted since we’ve been together for 23 yrs….a great husband indeed! I can’t wait to play “Little Red Corvette” by Prince! Vroom vroom!
I'm new to the corvette club, I don't have a C-5 but recently got a 1993 C-4 and I absolutely love it. (69,230 miles) I also have a 1995 Z28 Camaro so I'm very familiar with the LT1 engine and it's quirks. (186,000 miles) Both are automatics (C4 4L60), (Z28 4L60E) So far no issues with either one they have been extremely reliable.
I had an 03 50th Anniversary Edition Z06, so I'm partial to that year. My mods were CAGS eliminator, MGW shifter, Borla Stingers, C6 Seats with burlap added under the seat. Lowered with stock bolts. Handled great with Vredestain Sessanta tires
I have a 97 C5 with 48000 miles. It sat for a while so obviously it needed a few things, but it fires right up and doesn’t miss a beat! Next stop: Supercharged 408 stroker!
I've wanted a Corvette since I was 5 years old and, after searching for 7 years, I finally bought mine for my 40th bday! It's not the year that I initially wanted, it's not the color (exterior) that I wanted, heck, it's not even the year or generation (C4, '96) that I had been searching for. And on top of all of that, I bought it from a sleazy dealer that was 1200 miles away without spending a few bucks and having the "Ghost" inspected. Big mistake:/ Fortunately, my 48k '97 was pretty clean and wasn't delivered with any catastrophic issues- although the dealer failed to disclose that the a/c didn't work(which I have yet to diagnose) and the glass top had worn off tinting (had a body color top included that looks much better anyway). I just replaced the crankshaft pulley after putting about 5k miles on it, and I've spent roughly another 4 grand on Speedline Z06 wheels and new tires, Z51 shocks and heavy duty sways and endlinks, plus a few cosmetic upgrades etc. Now, that is way more than I had anticipated spending in my first year of ownership. Definitely slowing down on spending, but I still have plans for another 4 or 5 grand worth of bolt-ons and upgrades. None of that really includes items that will deliver bigger power gains either- just getting the car dialed in and sorted out to where it's going to be relatively competent in all areas. It's all worth it. It's all worth waiting 35 years for my used dream car. I'm okay with that.
Early 03s as well. Still had the older fuel system that let you change the filter and easier upgrades. I have a "late" 03 and it has the same system as the C6 does and it makes it harder/costlier to upgrade. My only complaint about the car.
I was working at a chevy dealership in the service department. When the C5 came out. Lightyears in technology compared to the C4. Getting back to oil issue. At that time GM was having a huge problem with several of their motors for piston slap & oil consumption. Had several customers coming into track oil consumption test. Then having it logged in their service file. Once it was proved about oil oil usage. They got a brand new shiny motor! Lol!
I feel lucky, I have a 2001 without the oil consumption issue. However I have replaced the EBCM, Shocks, sway bar linkage. Radio with touch screen 2 din, subwoofer, K&N cold air intake, Borla stinger II exhaust with x-pipe, front splitter, belts, hoses, and Big 3 grounding system. Thinking above a supercharger to complete the build. It's the best C5 in Sacramento. Just wish it had a manual transmission. Keep up the great videos!
Triple Black 1999 C5 manual w/smoke roof, searched for the Active Handling so I didn't jack it up. Bought at 80k miles for $14k in 2007 Sold 2+ yrs later 130k miles for $12.5 in 2010 Absolutely no mods. 3 sets of tires Water pump and Starter. Active Handling warnings ⚠️ had just started, I was cycling the key before startup to get clean messages. It had a weird very slight harmonic vibration at cruise speed on highway, idk. Loved that car, solid as a rock. Exact same car sold as I bought, solid. Great video, just might have another C5 one day. 😀
I've had an 02 for 8 years. It was my every day driver whenever it wasn't winter in Minnesota. It has been the most reliable car I've owened, and I've had an Acura TL and a Honda Accord. My Lexus has been just as good, but I've only had it for 2 years so technically the Vette has been more reliable. The engine sips gas on the freeway. I get 25 miles per gallon with the Corvette. At 90 mph on the freeway it's under 2k rpm. It has flaws, and I don't expect them all to be as reliable, but obviously the potential is there if you take care of it.
I had a 99 C5 and still have an 04 Le Mans Corvette. Both cars had the ride control. You can program out the F45/F55 ride control on both of these if you know what you’re doing with the computer. I’ve had my 04 since 2013 and the magnetic ride shocks were programmed out seven years ago so I could put in Bilstein shocks. If you’re going to put up a video like this, you should really know what you’re talking about, before you upload it. End of story. If you don’t believe me, travel to Prescott, Arizona, and you can come see mine.
I believe you, if you wouldn't mind, let Lyle at C&S Corvettes know, he gets asked to do this a A lot more than I do and he's not sure how to do it either. I'm assuming that you're using a tech 2 to do it?
@@Toys4Life I had two different techs in So Cal do it. You do need a Tech II to disable the ride control or magnetic ride control option. Danny Bahn @ DP Performance in Whittier, CA did it to my 99.
In most instances if you buy from original owner and it’s Automatic you will be pretty safe. Don’t ever buy a Modified car with a four speed as most are beat to their last breath. Why else would anyone put all the extra money in more hp.🤔😬
@@ronsteitz4535 bought her from a 60 years old man (3rd owner). no mods, not even 70k miles but some things have to be done. Harmonic balancer, crankshaft sealing, diff is a bit moist, a roof sealing is broken… but nothing crazy i think.
@@VerrueckterKerl85 Sounds like a good project car. You will have a car to be proud of when finished. My last Vette was a 1973 which I owned for 28 yrs.and put many hrs into bringing back to a very dependable car. I sold the car being better than when I found it. A nice car can bring an owner a lot of pride and fulfillment.😉👍
@@ronsteitz4535 I agree, you should never buy a C5 Corvette with a 4-speed, because that would be the automatic! The manual is a 6-speed. It's quicker, less maintenance, gets better fuel economy, is more fun, and can handle more power without blowing! I do agree to not buy a 'modified' car as it's probably been beat on, but I do believe in modifying it myself (and taking care of it). But having owned 3 Vettes- 2 manuals and 1 auto, I'd only own manual Corvettes in the future. Maybe an exception for the C8, as it only comes as a dual-clutch automatic (already having issues, btw).
I’ve learned one thing after owning 8 Corvettes. Never buy the first year of any generation they seem to have the most problems. My 2002 Z06 has been an awesome car but it’s heavy modified and all the problems associated with the car were fixed.
@@craigthescott5074 you got me beat there for sure. I was 28 when I bought a 78 and was 30 when I bought my 94. I traded a little cash and my 78 to get my 2004. Kind of think I should have kept my 78 and just paid the 10k for the 04. That old 78 had a zz4 crate motor tci tranny 4spd glass tops turbo hood and chrome hooker header with side pipes. It was in terrible condition but definitely repairable with restoration.
I just purchased a c5 corvette with low miles (235k) and a salvage title. I paid $28,000 cash, a dead rat and a half pack of Necco wafers and I'm so happy.
Well good. I have an 03 with a stick. Had it 1.5 years now. I love it. Had to give it some serious love though. Last owner neglected it and yes. I had to replace the EBCM. That wasn't fun.
Too bad for the neglect on such a perfect specimen. I had a 6spd '03 (Millenium Yellow), and it was the finest car I've ever owned, out of 39! I'm sure you're gonna serve each other well, don't get rid of it like I did!
@@JYP1M I've had some, horn button in the steering wheel, window motor, windshield wiper motor, I have about 35K in miles on it. It seems electronics and motors are a weak link.
Don’t discount the 1997 corvette, 322,000 miles just routine maintenance with the exception of 2 transmission overhauls the first one was poorly overhauled. By the still getting 30 mpg at 75 miles per hour
I'm the original owner of a 2001 Z06 with 27,000 miles. I know about the oil consumption problem but have never had a problem with mine. I have owned 25 Corvettes in the last 20 years. Everything from classic to the new C8. That includes a C6 ZR1 and 1969 L-88. The 2001 Z06 is my 1st choice which explains why I still own the car. Amen!
We just bought a 04 commemorative edition for the car lot. I’ve always been a C3/C4 guy but I should have looked at these cars many many years ago. Much more comfortable, more room inside, easier to get in and out of and a budget performance car for the money
I have a 2004 base Commemorative. Actually, the mag ride shock control can be removed through a very specific process which requires a TECH 2 programmer. The suspension control module is now disconnected, and the body control module has the F55 option removed. No more mag shocks, no simulators, with no error codes. I did not know the fuel filter and regulator is in one of the tanks. Aggh. I recently bought a fuel filter intending to change it. I guess that will wait.
Did you actually have it programmed out, cuz my understanding through credible sources is that the '04s were different and you're screwed. But if you've actually had it done and yours is in fact an '04, I'm all ears!
@@Toys4Life Mine is indeed an '04, built in 11/2003. I am not 100% sure what was actually done as I took it to a dealer for them to program it out since I did not have access to a GM TECH 2 programmer. BTW I had this done in August 2015, so it's been awhile. I did print out the procedure highlighted in the Corvette Forum article "Deprograming F55 Suspension" and provided that to the service writer in case they could use it. The article mentions it only works for the '03 and '04 years (F55) since the prior years were different (F45). The article did mention simulators would not work on the '04 so the '04 must be different in some way as you mentioned. This is what I did. I replaced the shocks which caused shock error codes as expected. I took the car to the dealer. When I picked up the car, the suspension module in the back of the car was unplugged as I expected, and there were no more error codes. I can only assume it is programmed out of the body control module since I am guessing that there would be a communication error with the suspension module if it weren't programmed out. As I understand it, if one were to simply turn off the F55 in the body control module without following something like the deprogramming sequence the communications would rediscover the suspension module and turn the F55 feature back on therefore producing shock error codes. I hope this pile of information helps in some way. I'm not suggesting you change your chart, but I wanted to make you aware that I believe it can be done. And no I'm not mad you didn't pick my year. It took time and research to convince myself it would work before I bit the bullet and de-magnetized it. I liked the mag shocks, but I didn't want any future issues that you highlighted, and I only used the sport mode anyway.
Lol. I did the same shit. And Im also taking those overpriced shocks off. Whats a tech2 programmer? My mechanic said he can get rid of the codes. Im assuming that's what you are talking about.
I have a 2003 C5 50th anniversary just like the one behind you. It's even the same color. I repaired the EBCM myself using knowledge gained from UA-cam. I repaired the HVAC display myself - again thanks to UA-cam. It has non-electronic shocks. It has 150,000 miles and runs great! My one gripe is that crappy oil pressure sensor. I replaced it once but it only lasted about 4 years. Now I'm faced with changing it again. This time I'm going to install and extender hose that will put the sensor where I can get to it.😂
I've owned a 03 C5 Z06 since 2012. Built up engine and supercharged with 590 rwhp. Only thing I've done is replace the headlight motors and wiring harness.
Honest candor from you, sir. I have an 02 Z06 that has a mild build from Vengeance Racing. It has 68K miles on it and the only that I've had to fix is the water pump....knock on wood!!
I used your advice from a previous video and kept my search within the 01 to 04 range. I think I'll be happy with my new 02. No plans on flogging the girl.
Well that makes me feel good about my 2003 Z06. Some good info. I had a 98 C5 a few years back and it gave me no problems so 8 agree with u that most years 9f C5 are decent.
My 01 daily driver is pretty dependable. No mag ride. I have an EBCM replacement still in the box if I ever need to replace the original in the car. Automatic so daily stop and go drive is nice. No plans on serious mods or power boost. Just little issues. Just changed the alternator and starter and I added a heat shield over the starter to protect the plastic on the back of the starter from heat of the downpipe. Aka (charge system fault) code. Car runs strong. I honestly can't complain. Next i will replace my harmonic balancer with a better aftermarket version before it becomes a problem in the future. 67 thousand garage kept miles and still holding up. Love this car for what it is.
2000 convertible w/202,000 still running strong w/no lights on. Never needed repairs u mentioned, but I drive it all year round. Worst thing u can do is let a car sit, in my opinion.
Simply this is the best website for C5 information. I bought my C5 3 years ago and latched on to the first Torch Red C5 in top shape. Wish I had done some research first. So far no problems. My C5 has 19K miles. In your opinion, is the failure of the ECBM caused by use or age or both. I would think that higher mileage Vettes would be more likely to fail, but I'm only guessing. Thanks
Thank you for the kind words, I think the EB CM failure in the '01 and newer models is definitely just from heat cycling, it causes the solder joints to break which can be easily fixed usually. Not quite sure about the earlier models nor am I sure which one has a higher failure rate, only that the later years are easier to fix or replace.
I have a 2004…I’ve unfortunately had some bad luck recently. My SHIFTER CABLE broke (luckily happened in my driveway) and my Steering Wheel Position Sensor went bad - literally within a month of each other. Only has 88,000 miles on it. Car is great, but just be prepared for something to happen eventually. Unless you have luck on your side.
That shifter cable (plastic cap) cracking because of the heat just scares the *hit out of me because I know it won't happen at home! Worse yet I have only recently learned that it's not a matter of if it breaks is when! I am at 70,000miles now
I bought a 02 Vette great car when nothing goes wrong but something will, I bought the 02 Vette in 2014 with 86,000 miles and a short time later it started showing service ABS , service traction control, service active handling, I fixed the ABS and traction control by soldering the circuits inside the electronic brake control module but the active handling is a steering position switch replacement at 340.00 installed a new radiator 240.00 installed a new fuel pump 205.00 installed a new water pump and belts installed a new battery, installed a new right headlight motor had a new windshield installed, it’s a solid driver now I’m selling it the car runs great at 119,00 mills on it it has the premium package 2 Z51, 12 CD player in the trunk dual power seats
I have an o2 triple black vert, manual, 14500 miles. Zero issues in 3 years, performs well though it’s mostly a garage queen. Agreed with other vids that mention you must keep a trickle charge on if it’s gonna sit for a few weeks at a time.
Nice - who installed the LS3 - Probably my favorite Corvette engine EVER. Yes, even more than the Z06 and ZR1 engines - those are too damn expensive IMO.
Thanks for the excellent video. I am starting to look for a C5 that I will use for limited street use and a track day now and then. I'm over 60 and I want a trouble-free car. Could you add a pdf to the chart to your links?
2004 was a good car, I miss mine. 2003 was definitely the best. I still regret not having bought a 2003 Z06 that was available when I bought my 2004 base corvette
The 97-2000 Camaro and Firebird/Trans Ams also had the EBCM issue. If you are in need of a replacement, I've been told there are 4 or 5 different code numbers, which you must match to yours. Only way to find one that I know of, is Ebay.
I own a 2004 Vette with 43,000 miles and have had zero issues to this point. Every 7 yrs I change the tires regardless of miles on tires. I’ve seen the damage a tire can do to rubber separation on quarter panels😬 My car has never been beat on so oil changes once a year is the only real maintenance I’ve done . Three yrs ago I had all fluids flushed and replaced because of time for preventative maintenance.👍
Great video! Thanks for the useful info in these videos. I love my 2004 C5 24 hours of Le Mans commemorative (with the Le Mans metallic blue paint and shale interior), the shocks replacement doesn't scare me and I feel no ill will about this contest. If just those shocks are what eliminates it from this, I count myself lucky....it is a great car.
2004 is great, only other negative is the fuel filters in the tank which at some point will be a problem, probably just replace the fuel pumps in the filter at the same time at some point.
@@Toys4Life Oh, forgot to add, I have already had to replace those at about 75k miles so I should be ok with them for a while. It was expensive yes, but I still love that car. Anyway, when it's being worked on, I can drive my wife's car...I waited on a waiting list for a year and a half to get her the new full size Bronco, from the first bunch off the assembly line in 2021. I love that car also, but she only lets me drive it once in a while. 🙂
I love me some Z06! I wish they had the more aerodynamic (and prettier) roof of the base model, and didn't cost twice as much for slightly better performance, but I still want one! 😎
Toys4Life you are so right. Try to do as much as you can yourself, do the research, and better your skills. It make take you making many friends and piecing together a great many you tube videos to get you to the proper ways to diagnose and fix your car's issue(s), but will give you some satisfaction. After 50 years of specializing in Corvette repair, so much of what I see are opinions of problems, and very little based on training, knowledge of engineering, of great diagnostic skills. However, there are those few rare instances of genius, when a Vette enthusiastic hobbyist discovers a unique and time and money saving technique that benefits (saves time and $), all auto owners, and truly amazes even the best auto techs out there. I guess, that after so many thousands of the same brand of car, especially hi-po autos, one gets to the point of saturation, and determines that those vehicles were ill designed, ill manufactured, and not well maintained. If it were not for Corvettes I would likely not have had the opportunity to make a good living, charging only reasonable rates, diagnosing root problems and fixing only what what needed. Since "retiring" I have heard only horror stories and punitive pricing punishments from my Corvette friends. Still I can remember the feeling of hitting 166 mph in one of my Vettes, and while I can no longer do that, I can replay it over and over in my mind. So the whole Corvette enthusiasm is really a great hobby and friendship builder. And truly America's only sports car worth having, despite it's shoddy engineering and quality issues. Still more exiting that racing against my nearly 100 year old neighbor's grandmother in her Tesla Plaid. Beat my behind badly two months ago at our neighborhood 1/4 mile dragstrip. I think she still had her groceries and walker in the back seat when she pushed the pedal to the metal. Enjoy your hobby and your car.
Watched this video several times over before buying my 2000 C5. I am well aware of its possible issues, bottom line for me is worst case an EBCM issue which is not the end of the world either + I can afford the piece if need be. Other issues are occasional maintenance I can afford as well. I don't push the car either, EBCM it's more of a safety issue if I need to do some emergency manoeuvre, it's just better to have all safety systems ON and brake quick or not spin, but so far no sign of worry on that end. Been a few weeks now, just planning on changing the harmonic balancer (seems ok but a bit used, probably stock, and starting to slightly vibrate so it can't hurt preemptively putting a brand new one) and switching to LED lights. Rest is awesome, dream car for me (it was THE corvette when I was a teen!) and enjoying every mn in it! Thanks for the video
What an awesome video.....very informative.....well done. Questions........ For the 2001 manual transmission cars......do you know about at what VIN number sequence that the improved internal components of the torque tube were installed, as well as the stronger rod bolts? I have been shopping for quite a while now for model years 2002 to 2003 for ALL of the reasons you have detailed here (which again is awesome) but I do not want to miss out on perhaps a later VIN run of a 2001 that might have all of the latest and greatest Model Run improvements........ Thanks so much for your time... and thanks again for such a great, informative video :-)
That is a great question and unfortunately I do not. I think you're correct they probably used up what they had in stock and then transferred to the newer design.
I had it affords the 06 with 30000 miles I have bought and I regret selling and I recently bought a 50th anniversary ruby red bucket on top with 23000 miles I put 6,000 miles on it the last 7 months and it's been a wonderful car and I like them both
My 2003 AE has the FFS RPO Code which means that the fuel regulator and filter are attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. It also has the magnetic ride control shocks which I love, but you can do an F55 delete if you know someone with a GM tech2. I don’t plan on deleting mine when the time comes. I am starting a savings account for shocks.
My understanding is you can do the delete on the 2003, but not the 2004. You must have a late year 2003 to have that fuel filter in the tank... I think they switched it like the last month or two of production. I love those shocks too, but I hate it when they get crazy in price!
I did the f55 delete on my 2003 50th anniversary. The delete worked flawlessly. I then installed c6 z06 shocks instead. As much as I love the mag ride they tend to fail which becomes dangerous when driving the car spiritedly.
New 2004 C5 owner here. Good video. I've watched a few of them over the recent past before and after purchasing the car. Now I know where my fuel filter is not. I did think it was on the frame rail somewhere. Has it EVER been changed, hmm?
Something to be aware of 4 sure. If/when the pump, reg or filter go out, look at is 20 year maintenance and change em all (:-).
Nope, its in the tank
@@Toys4Life what would be the cost to change them?
In the gas tank 😢.
And this guy also said you can't delete the magnetic shocks. Just so happens you can. I did it to my 2004!
@Toys4Life Dude, I deleted my magnetic shocks , you might revise that. Mine is a 2004, now has kyb shocks
Just bought a 2004 with 3400 miles . Paid a pretty penny for it but it's basically a new car. Forgot to mention,, it's a zo6
@RyRy You have got the most desirable year, except the 50th Anniversary Corvette came standard with the Magnetic ride suspension
Do you think it will be worth about 3K for 4 shocks installed when the time comes?
I was looking for a black 50th Anniversary Corvette, but maybe now I think I will just get a black 2003 without the Magnetic ride suspension, and the premium price for a 50th Anniversary Edition?
@@EXCELSIOR_INC I plan on keeping the car indefinitely so whatever it needs I will replace in time. Add some upgrades here & there but it will look predominantly stock. Just purchased a 2002 yesterday and I admit I was one of those watching your vids without being subscribed. I have remedied that. You and C&S really helped in making the decision and although you and he differ on your conclusions, for me, the information was invaluable. Thanks again.
I appreciate the sub and enjoy the heck out of the 02 C5 this summer!!
He's wrong about not being able to delete the shocks and put regular shocks on though.
Thanks Tracy, glad you guys are using and loving the heck out of that C5!
Does it consume it a lot of oil? Or was that issue fixed early ?

Glad to see you switch to the right car! Enjoy the heck out of it sir! (of course I do respect the s2000's - but 100% different experience!)
I paid 5k for 100k mile c5 3 years ago. Been daily driving it for 3 year. My wife's 2016 corolla is less reliable.

I’m partial to my ‘99 Coupe, but love all the C5’s no matter the year
Works for me sir!
@keithp115 2004 they upgraded the transmission to handle more horses! I'm not sure what exact year they did that but it's better than the early C5s
That's awesome, you made a wise choice in my opinion!
Only use Top Tier Gas and you should be fine.
Ya , I screwed up and got an 04. Electrical nightmare. Magnetic shocks too. I bought aftermarket regular shocks. My mechanic said he can work around the computer. The fact they put the fuel filter in the tank is utterly stupid. It was already a good design.

@@CrossWindsPat I track a 600HP Shelby Cobra that weighs 1,000 lbs less than the C5... if you think 405HP in a 90's wedge is a lot to handle, try 600HP in a 60's roadster!😄

Absolutely, get it the way you want and enjoy it!
Dammm you could have bought a 2015 w all the money spent so far

Early 03s as well. Still had the older fuel system that let you change the filter and easier upgrades. I have a "late" 03 and it has the same system as the C6 does and it makes it harder/costlier to upgrade. My only complaint about the car.

This time I'm going to install and extender hose that will put the sensor where I can get to it.😂
That pesky oil pressure sending unit!
I've owned a 03 C5 Z06 since 2012. Built up engine and supercharged with 590 rwhp. Only thing I've done is replace the headlight motors and wiring harness.
Sir you are spot on...nothing silly about your presentation. Very insightful. I' ll keep
Hi, your comment ended abruptly - but thanks for the kind words!!
Honest candor from you, sir. I have an 02 Z06 that has a mild build from Vengeance Racing. It has 68K miles on it and the only that I've had to fix is the water pump....knock on wood!!
Nice - Enjoy the summer with it!
I used your advice from a previous video and kept my search within the 01 to 04 range. I think I'll be happy with my new 02. No plans on flogging the girl.
Thanks for the feedback - sounds like you got the right one!!
You did good, enjoy it!
Well that makes me feel good about my 2003 Z06. Some good info. I had a 98 C5 a few years back and it gave me no problems so 8 agree with u that most years 9f C5 are decent.
Most are decent for sure!! I just like to be super informed if I am buying a big screen TV or a C5!
Sounds like you got a good one! Continued enjoyment!!
I fell in love with the thicker sister of the C5, the WS6 :D
I want another fourth gen!
2000 convertible w/202,000 still running strong w/no lights on. Never needed repairs u mentioned, but I drive it all year round. Worst thing u can do is let a car sit, in my opinion.
Agreed!
I love you balanced and analytical thinking. Did you take engineering or physics. These disciplines encourage this kind of thinking.
I did take a physics class as an elective in college as a business major. I appreciate your comments sir!
2004 Z06 commemorative edition w/ carbon fiber hood & graphics
That's a nice ride!
Thank you for this overview, I'm looking to buy a nice 1999 C5 with low miles and now I know what to look out for.
I bought a 99 a few days ago!
2002 was the first model year and calendar year that I drove a corvette in. Fun times.
Nice 👍
Not a silly exercise. If I ever want to buy a C-5, 2004 it will be.
Lucky it was in your driveway like you said though!
That's not so bad?
I have an o2 triple black vert, manual, 14500 miles. Zero issues in 3 years, performs well though it’s mostly a garage queen. Agreed with other vids that mention you must keep a trickle charge on if it’s gonna sit for a few weeks at a time.
Man yours is barely broken in, take care of that beautiful machine!
Best year was 01 Zo6 in white, one of 352 made. Mine has 12k on it
Duly noted sir. Sounds like a nice one in all seriousness!!
Ur a right pinch purse! No deal!
Sounds like a made a pretty good choice picking up a 2004 C5 commemorative edition.
Triple black 02 vert showroom clean....I ain't afraid of no ghosts!
Thank's for the video, I have C5 2002 automatic with new LS3.
Nice - who installed the LS3 - Probably my favorite Corvette engine EVER. Yes, even more than the Z06 and ZR1 engines - those are too damn expensive IMO.
@@Toys4Life In Finland it installed by Finnvette.. It cost me ab. 12000@ euros.
Thanks for the excellent video. I am starting to look for a C5 that I will use for limited street use and a track day now and then. I'm over 60 and I want a trouble-free car. Could you add a pdf to the chart to your links?
I thought about doing that but I'm not sure how to do it.
Not great odds...and ,$$
@@Toys4Lifecan you just bypass it or remove it and drive without it?
Here's hoping you're right on as I've owned an '03 50th anniv. convertible for 3 years now.
Agreed!
I believe the other three of the best C5 but I believe the C5 as a whole is when the best-looking Corvettes made in a long time
I own a 2004 Vette with 43,000 miles and have had zero issues to this point.
Nice!
Same here👍
Damn. Just about every comment to this video I can relate to. Including the damage to the back wheel liner.
great video, i have a '02 Z that i only put about 2k a year on, those a fairly hard miles, have not noticed any oil consumption thankfully
Thank you and appreciate the real world info from you 02Z!
I love me some Z06! I wish they had the more aerodynamic (and prettier) roof of the base model, and didn't cost twice as much for slightly better performance, but I still want one! 😎
About same here. Love my z06. 2002
Owned a98’ and 01’, both were awesome..
Nice
I’m looking into buying one the beginning of next year
Oh, now I remember. I repair Corvettes for a living. And what a nice living it is...Only Charging Reasonable Rates.
Try to do most of the work yourself and save some $$ Bring the tough jobs to the pro's?
Very helpful I'm getting ready to buy a 03 C5 and in beautiful condition with 85000 on it and only $16,000
Only
I got a z06 Manual 04 and im more than happy 🥹
I did enjoy the video. I have a 2004 c5. The fuel filter is good to know about.
Thanks for the thanks and glad you are behind the wheel of your dream car!
Glad this video popped up after I bought my 2000 lol
Sorry!
😊😊😊 I got the best one! 2003 Z06 hardtop!
Naturally, the C5 Z06 would get the nod, but i like the coupe as well! Cheers!😁🛠️😁🔧
Fair enough!
Im not. Those magnetic shocks dont last as long.
@@autobrovado9497 Did you install the shocks yourself? If so how hard and did you just pull the tires off?
