YouTube or Film School? by Dave McCary (Director of BRIGSBY BEAR)

  • BRIGSBY BEAR and SNL Director Dave McCary is asked his thoughts on film school and if he thinks it's important for aspiring filmmakers to attend. Dave says that although he did not finish film school, he does not want to discourage anyone who wants to go. He feels that it's up to the individual. For him, watching UA-cam videos and learning via on-the job training, being on film sets, having a successful UA-cam channel with his fellow Good Neighbor creators was enough for him to be skilled with the craft. However, he thinks that the contacts/alumni opportunities a film student can attain attending/graduating film school are certainly worth it if someone decides on this route. Dave weighed the options of time, student loan debt and his preference/ability to learn on his own when making this decision for whether to stay in film school.

    Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z

I met Andy Samberg and had a discussion about Juliard. He said he liked the program but it was a waste of money. He then went to UC Berkeley I believe and he said the best thing he did was make videos with his Lonely Island crew and he was lucky to be discovered.

Wow. No wonder Emma Stone married him. He seems so decent, caring, intelligent, interesting. Good looking too, of course.

What he is saying can be applied to all arts. A degree will not help you make a career out of your art.

I just saw it last Friday and really loved it! I also happen to know Kyle, which is just like a cherry on top.
Any event, definitely worth seeing this film (especially if you watch the trailer and it speaks to you)!

THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO. I want to go to Ucla and Usc film school but that's really true. What's he is saying, but that networking your getting from going to film school is pretty awesome. Can you put a link of people talking about marketing film

film school so far has only helped me in screenwriting but as far as teamwork and directing goes I seem to be constantly changing teams (thankfully with the last one we made a pretty decent short) yet I'd love to direct or edit but film school has really discouraged me in directing. It's like I got a chance with a team, they weren't how I wanted them to be, everything got f*cked up, and so I'm really discouraged at directing right now but as you said youtube exists so that was a really helpful video. :)

      Efi is Rad
      What was wrong?
      Were they jerks?
      Didn't take you seriously?
Questioned you too much? As someone who is seriously considering film school it would really help to know more.

Luis Vazquez much appreciated. I've been studying on my own but realized there are tools not given. I've been through school once and grabbed a psych degree. Not knowing what you want when others do..can throw you I guess. I'm researching diff schools..not named USC and UCLA.

You obviously know him and Emma are together otherwise you wouldn’t be here watching his interview lol. Just get over the fact that she’s married to Dave and not Andrew 😂
