  • Just a quick edit of day three on our recent Ireland trip, starting out of Skibbereen and finishing in Cahersiveen on the Ring of Kerry. The route takes in Healy Pass, Mizen Head, Priests Leap and Caha Pass. It's about 165 miles so easily manageable in a day with lots of stops.

    💯% agree with you about judging a bike while your on a tour. Brings out all them little things you like and dislike when your sitting on them all day. 14 days on my 411 made me fall in love with it rarher than just thinking it was a tool for the job. What a chugger up hill on gravel. ❤️it.

    I'm delighted you came through my local area of West Cork, it is beautiful and you had the weather on your side what a bonus. I love watching your reviews on smaller capacity motorbikes, Royal Enfield has always been on my radar but for the time being I will potter around on my Fazer 600 which is too fast for me these days.

    A most instructive and enjoyable video. It just goes to show that mainland UK and Ireland offer so many varied touring adventures. We are so lucky here.

    I really enjoyed that Nathan, thank you. Having recently watched a video where the tour leader took his group of small capacity bikes from the U.K. deep into Germany travelling all the way on motorways and seeing nothing it’s great to see the small roads and views. For me that’s what motorcycle touring is all about.

    Thanks Nathan. OK, we were very lucky with the fabulous weather, but what made the trip was the route you chose for us, the relaxed, informal style of your adventures, and the other riders. We had an absolute ball!

    Totally agree about the training. When I was riding a lot I would take a "safety" course or track day training once a year. Back then it was about $300 USD for a two day week end course. High speed track to Police motorcycle training, it was all good. If I got one thing that would make me a quicker, safer rider I considered it a good course. The hardest ones were learning to ride SLOW in control...

    Glad you got the weather! I live not far from Belfast, interesting to get your take on the ferries. I normally use Belfast to Cairnryan, or Larne to Cairnryan, if heading to the continent it’s then about 5 hours to Hull. Occasionally I would use the Belfast - Liverpool crossing, overnight is great giving you a good early morning start. Rosslare to Cherbourg is the preferred option for France/Spain direction but it can be expensive and it’s a trek from Belfast to Rosslare. Sadly we’ve no regular service to the Isle of Man, just specials during the TT and it costs a fortune, anyway, good luck on your travels!

    I spent a few days in the Pyrenees last year riding with an old school friend. He was on his 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro and I was on my Honda 500X. I was so sure that he would disappear into the distance we pencilled in a few stops where he could wait for me. It never happened. On the tight mountain roads his bike was no faster than my own. He did disappear once when we got lower down but that was simply down to his interpretation of how much over the national speed limit would be acceptable being quite different from my own.

    As you rode along, I felt my 411 would have been as capable, judging your progress, just keeping the momentum to carry much the same pace.. if comes to it your 411 did the 'Tail of the Dagon', could it been that bad a Bike, yes, slower compared to larger Bike overall, yet held it's own.. got the job done.
    Ireland in parts very much like Western Scotland and parts of Wales with magnificent passes or the Dales/Peaks.
    As funds permit, Himalaya's a keeper.. if the room/money and considered a second more road based bike, should a Scram 452 come out might just tick the same boxes the 411 did.. if on price was close to the Shotgun 650.. Hey Ho..
    Excellent as always, stay safe, see ya' directly. Cheers Davey

    I'm planning a trip around Southern Ireland end of Oct /early Nov! I've only got 5 days from Essex and back so will probably concentrate on the South West Ring of Kerry and up to the Cliffs of Moher.
    I'm presuming that it is likely to be a wet one so I'm considering buying an old (2005) BMW R1200RT for the job... I think it would just be miserable on the KTM 390ADV.
    I shall probably avoid that gravely single track road though.

    • @clayfarnet970
      @clayfarnet970 18 днів тому +1

      Last year I bought a used 2013 rt and I absolutely love that bike. I think they are the best bang for the buck $$ for touring. The best thing about the rt is it already has everything needed for touring. The only advice I’d give is make sure the bike has its service history. I’m seriously considering buying a 2005 for my son so we can do a trip around the US this summer. Have fun 👍👍👍

    • @clayfarnet970
      @clayfarnet970 18 днів тому +1

      Btw, if you need tires, the Michelin Road 6 match up well with the rt especially in the rain. 👍👍

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  16 днів тому +1

      You could argue the other way; that it'd be miserable on the RT, especially on those tight little lanes. But if the weather's bad then some screen protection might not be so bad!
      Personally I'd ditch the CLiifs of Moher (£12 just to park!) and head to the Kilkee Cliffs instead, just a short drive south along the coast. They're free and the road runs right along the top of them. Stunning!

      @@nathanthepostman Yes I tend to agree, it's just the 6-8hr slog from Essex to Fishguard (and back) that I am kind of dreading. It started to get a bit much when I rode to North Devon on the KTM. I have an ergo seat coming so I will see what that is like on the ride up to the ABR festival...
      I've had a slight re think, I may just trailer the KTM and base myself in the Killarney sort of area and the do various day routes out from there. I'll probably still buy an 2005 1250RT though.

    Hey Nathan,
    I noticed Your tendency to run the 450 between 3000 and 4000 RPM,
    Personally, I keep the 450 above 4500 and below 8000rpm, just a little closer to its peak powerband.
    Knowing that you yourself have done ample miles on e.g. the ktm adventure 390, which also likes a tad more revs, why do you keep the 450 so low on roads where traction is a non-issue?
    maybe you are just lookin to score more miles to the gallon... Just wondering

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  18 днів тому +1

      Good spot ben. Yeah the bike was still being run in so I was taking it more gentle, around 6 - 6.5k rpm at that point. I'm a short shifter anyway. I tend to ride the torque rather than the power. Not for any reasons of fuel economy, just because I think it's a smoother way to ride. I'd have upped the revs at some parts on that video now that it's run it, but most of the time I'd have been quite low in the rev range. A tall gear and momentum is generally how I tend to ride.

    Let me preface this with the fact I’m an old fart. Just turned 70(WTF?) Road Ireland on pedal bikes in the 80’s. The Ordinance maps were incomparable. Little features well addressed ( a couple of crazy Holy Wells ) and a much better sense of perspective. Google is perhaps adequate, but far from fulfilling.
