Well it’s a wet Saturday and I’m going back to the vlogs I’ve missed. I had a 4 bike Thule tow bar mount carrier, which my son now has. Very good quality. Well made. That looked like a good design.
Just watched your video and it helping me get somewhat familiar before I install my 2 Thule ProRide 598004. I have the old square Thule bars. I may have some problem adjusting different size bikes since I am a grandpa and my grandboys ride 20 in. Wheel bikes. Guess I will have to adjust when I get there.
@@mtbtomfoolery hey you responded to my reply after watching video. I wanted to report yesterday I did the install and getting familiar before starting worked like a charm. After I did the passenger side I switched the rack over to driver install. Some extra work but nice design for Thule to have that option. Tried out with my grandboys bike and the wheel holders slid nice to strap in and secure the claw. Getting familiar makes the install fun. Thank you for taking time for this very helpful video.
Many thanks for your video! Made me buy two... 🙂 Just a few comments. - You can shift the arm to grab from the other side. Very useful with two, (one on each side of the roof), but also with just the one for you Brits, Kiwis etc. as it's much safer to access the bike from the roadside. - With a carbon frame, I'd say that you save your money by buying the protector, not the opposite. - Lock the locks, always. If nothing else they will stop mishaps that could cause you to drop your bike. === Thanks again! === 🙂
Hey Tomas, nice! You are correct, I now run 2 of these - it is easy enough to switch the arm over for access either side. I hear what you are saying about the carbon frame protector, that said I've been using mine without for months now without issue - you just need to make sure you don't overtighten. Good idea you suggest to lock it though, this actually happened to me on an older, cheaper Thule rack when the skinny frame on my road bike slipped the grip and the bike layed down sideways!
On the Internet there are always reports that the claw had come loose during the car ride. To follow up on these worrying events, I noticed after countless videos and forum posts that quite a few users do not follow the instructions correctly. Like here in the video, the torque was not observed correctly. One must absolutely turn to the torque limiter (loud click) that the claw is 100% correctly locked! If you happen to find other video with incorrectly presented application, share it necessarily.
Hey Stefan, some interesting points. I've just spent 15 minutes googling the problems you mentioned but couldn't find any mention, or videos about it. Would you care to share some links?
After a while the rear mount that felt secure seemed ok but when my mtb is strapped in the rear it wobbles can hear the tap tap tap of the clamp when driving. Roof bars and connections are tight
It's funny you should say that, I was putting my bike on the car a few days ago and the front mount moved slightly along the roof bar. I quick tighten of 1 turn on the clamp fixed that but it took me by surprise. I think as with anything like this it is prudent to check fixings periodically.
Hi Shane, you are fairly correct in your assumption. It would wholly depend on the bike to be honest. I got around it by fitting the Fidlock water bottle system (see my other vid about that) which is excellent.
Hey man. For some reason I didn’t get an alert about this vlog so just watched it now. I’ve got one of the previous models and look like Thule have addressed all the niggles I have with mine. Good to see they listen to customer feedback and make the changes. It looks a lot better now. I wonder if you had it cheaper because of the missing end cap etc. I’m surprised that doesn’t whistle like a bitch at higher speeds. Maybe if you don’t get a replacement from Thule you could take the back one off and put it on the front if it does get noisy.
Hey buddy, yes this newer one is much more sturdy than my older one I have too. Funnily enough I can't hear anything from the bars/rack when inside the car. I had to chase it about 200 times but they did actually send one - it looks much better now. I did think that may be why it was cheap/returned.
Perfect after 6 months, I've now added another for my wifes MTB, just go round bends as you normally would - you don't even notice you have bikes on the roof. The rack can't be removed from the bars but the bike could be pinched from the rack. This is not the solution for you if you want to leave it unattended with your bike up there. Sounds like you need a van you can keep them inside 👍
@@mtbtomfoolery Thanks for fast reply. I was thinking maybe to lock bike with a chain on the roof with this rack while i am not near the car for few hours in town. It would be rarely but I must think about safety and locking. I would not left bike on roof during the whole night🙂
Not tried! It is locked onto the aero bars. Plus you can't remove it from the aerobars without removing the locked end cap on the bars themselves. I doubt anyone is that desparate for a bike rack!
thanks for taking the time to make this - really useful and the driving around at the end is genius!
You're welcome Dan. I'm glad you found it useful 😀
Thanks man, this video was just what I was looking for. 👍 Off to find a deal on 2!
Nice one!
Would this work for a kids bike? Like 6/7 year old bike? Great vid btw

Welcome back! Thule do bang out a good product. That said, this new rack is way better than my older Thule one.
Thanks for the review. Very clear and charismatic; you should do more!
Thanks! Been a bit busy over the last year but more coming soon!!

This is not the same issue… the torque click is for the rack fitting onto the bar… NOT the bike. The torque click is from the Alan key on the mounts
Great video, it was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the video! I deciding between UpRide and ProRide and probably will go with your option. Have you considered UpRide?
Hey you're welcome! I have not considered the UpRide as the ProRide's have always met with my needs. I'm sure they are a great product too :)
Looking at how the bike attaches, if you have a bottle cage I assume it wouldn’t work? Thanks for the vid too!

Do you know what the model of the locks?
What locks are you asking about? All of the locks shown in the video come with the bars or racks....

After six months of usage, is it still good? Can bike be stolen from this rails ? It is sturdy enogh on highways and in curves on local roads ?

Can someone steal the straps? Is there anyway they can take it out?
You can take them out to replace them I believe but I've not had reason to see how easy or hard it is....
Good review and, for what it's worth, Thule is pronounced 'too-lee'.
Thanks David. I'm glad someone knows!

You're welcome!
Hope you take something away from this video 👍
What are your thoughts on the Thule 598 Bike Rack ❓
Easy to steal, they say. Is that true ?
Not tried! It is locked onto the aero bars. Plus you can't remove it from the aerobars without removing the locked end cap on the bars themselves. I doubt anyone is that desparate for a bike rack!
