At it's core Dune is a period piece. Feuding noble houses that could be anywhere in Europe. Dune just happens to take place in the distant future on a galactic scale.
It's a shame so many people have ragged on this series. I thought it was a decent enough recreation and much closer to the books than the 1984 Lynch adaptation. I value the merit of both attempts.
Between the theater and mini series productions, I have to say that the mini series was far better. The acting was first rate, unlike that in the big screen movie. Most of the characters in the movie version were overacted, especially the Barron Von Harkonnen. At least in the mini series he was more believable, I do agree that neither version ever had a chance against the first book. There could never be enough time in any film adaptation to include all the details Frank Herbert wrote into that Masterpiece of literature. By the time the first film production was completed, I had already read the first four books in the series, and was the proud owner of the Dune tabletop game.
Exactly what I was looking for ... fascinating: smoking on set, CRT camera monitors. How come this has only 425 views? :D
