This conversation made me think of my family and generational dysfunction. I just graduated with a Masters degree in Software Engineering. I included them in a group chat thanking them for support and love after my graduation. They said im being snobby and rubbing it in their face. Yet my cousin gets out of jail and they started a group chat congratulating him. Im absolutely dumbfounded by this not hating on my cousin im glad he’s home but it really makes me want to distance myself.
Damn I can’t even imagine having my only support system being so insecure they can’t congratulate me. I’m sorry you gottta deal with that. If you have the energy and love to do so, you gotta be straight forward and let them know they’re insecure about your success in some way or another, no matter how difficult the convo is.
No don’t tell them they’re insecure that’s not emotionally intelligent. The fact is you have to be STOIC. Be the rock your family truly needs you to be. There’s no love lost only more understanding of the situation. These things you can’t take personal because this situation is just as new for them as it is for you. Be understanding, patient, and rational. Remain humble and don’t fall for the trap of telling a person about themself unless they are wise enough in your character judgement to make those necessary acknowledgments and changes. A little long winded but necessary hope it helps.
Obviously they are struggling with chronic stagnation and some stunted character development 😬. Not everyone can make it as far as U have thru a super complex labyrinth of internal and external hurdles amongst constant political, social, economic, spiritual and possibly health related challenges. U must forge ahead toward greater expansion and offer support and solidarity, but with skillful boundaries and buffer zones - they can take U down with both conscious and unconsciously destructive patterns. But always remember - THEY ARE YOU!!! 🤔👌🏽💜🌎💯🦉 So its always a humbling and somewhat perplexing state of affairs. THEY are how YOU came forth into Being Human 👍🏾🤓

Honestly, this advice is priceless. I just got offered a record and publishing deal as described, and this conversation convinced me to follow my own path, believe in myself and don't be seduced by the money aspect of it. Thanks Pharrell and Steve! You guys are legends

@@northside2southside12 I understand what you mean. I just think it's important to prove to myself that I can get my music out there, build a fanbase without being dependent on someone else. I experienced in the past that having a manager and so on gave me an excuse to put the blame on someone else if things didn't go as planned or as I imagined they would. In addition if you look at these deals they really do take most of the ownership of your creations until eternity. This is no joke, it really says 'eternity' in these contracts. What they basically do is give you money you can live of for a period of time and be comfortable but they take almost all your rights. If your music blows up you almost see no money and you're back where you started. As an argument they let you believe that there are these gate keepers at radio, tv and so on. And that without these mediums it is impossible to get your music out there ,which is bullshit. The first song I released got played over 2.5 million times on Spotify, entered the charts on French radio and gets more plays everyday. I think the smart thing to do is saving up your own money and betting on yourself. I truly believe that the music I made over the past years and that I am going to release is going to be appreciated by people no matter if I am signed with a label, publisher or not
I think the biggest mistake I made was to think I needed a record deal. It only slowed me down. So to anyone who's reading this, focus on making something you're really proud of and get it out there. Seeing your music being listened to without any artificial things going on feels really good tbh
I LOVE that the conversation in the black community is more and more about ownership. That's really one of the absolute biggest keys to freedom. The other big one is supporting each other in that growth. The support could be encouragement, knowledge, (this is a prime example of it), and purchasing excellent products we produce. Thank you, gentlemen! Great conversation. It was a 43 min talk that seemed like 15 tops.

This conversation resonates deep with me. I'm a construction worker who makes good money but I the vanilla ppl are a majority and they do all they can to make us feel like we don't belong. Meanwhile I have dreams and aspirations that I will admit I've lacked on chasing money and fortifying someone else's goals. I got revived by this video.
Thanks for this guys. I'm a upcoming artist out of VA. (I actually went to the same highschool as Pharell!) I'm also a envoking entrepreneur/ business owner clothing line, and this is amazing. You guys are also a great motivation to keep me going through adversity and building from the ground up. We definitely need to procure healthy relationships with each other and the people in the right places so we can claim those things we deserve.
