Hi thank you for the wonderful video I have a kelpie cross cattle dog and I just love her she is so intelligent but just loves being around people when you take it down to the dog park that instinct of the kelpie comes in where she likes the head the other dogs thank you once again for the wonderful history

Mate, Oz IS amazing. We are influenced by - mostly American - media and pop culture, but nowhere near as much as you mob are. I've got what looks like border collie cross cattle dog and I think dingo,coulor of collie but a bit smaller and stocky , this is the best video I've seen on Aussie herders

I've always liked the smaller stumpy biter lol. On my farm, armadillos were digging up my pastures every night. My heelers took care of them at night like others that turn them loose on rats.
the Queensland Heeler is a combination of the Halls Heeler and Timmins Biter. The Biter was just to rough on the cattle, thats why they mated with the Halls Heeler
I had the pleasure of talking care of a ACD named Toadie. I had no idea they didn’t take to everyone. She was a gem of a little girl. I ended up getting a ACD/Border Collie mix. Love him to bits but, he’s crazy smart. He will argue & stare you down just to get his way.

Here's where these people mislead! There are 2 colours if you like of Queensland Heeler, Blue and Red! The reds actually have a predominant Dingo gene!The Halls Heeler came out of NSW, the Timmins Biter came out of Queensland, and the offspring of the mating between the 2 breeds became known as the Queensland Heeler, Australian Cattle Dog is a bullshit tag, the dog is really the Queensland Heeler. Oh, and my grandmothers name was Hall! She married my great Uncle who died in ww1, and then married his brother, my Grandpa. She told me all about this!
Actually funny that u mention it, i have a Blue Heeler and my mate has an SBT (Staffordshire Bullterrier) and they are very similar in the way they behave🤷♂️ Heelers are just a little smarter lol❤

Queensland Heelers are no good with sheep, way to rough, they cant run as long as the Kelpie, which was vbred specifically for sheep. The Heeler is tougher than the Kelpie, but the Kelpie is smarter, more stamina, and more loyal.
I agree. My dad had a ranch for many years and I worked on it growing up and during my breaks in college. We had just about every type of herding out there: Aussie Shepherds, Heelers, Border Collies, McNabs. We only had 1 Kelpie during that time as they were kind of hard to find back in the late 80's in the US(I guess they're still not all that common today). She was something special, though, and that was apparent right from the start. They're kind of 1 man dogs, and she bonded with me. Had her for 9 years until some asshole shot her from the highway, then took off like some chickenshit. They may not have the bulk of a heeler, but they make up for it with their quickness, athleticism and agility. Plus, they have that 'stare', and they have no fear of even the rankest Brahma bull. While the Heeler delivers nips to the hind legs of the cattle, the Kelpie saves his bites only for the trouble makers thinking about stampeding and they are a quick reminder to cut the shit and get back in the bunch until the little black and tan dog says otherwise 😂 Nothing against Heelers as I have had and loved them as well. I'm not sure if I have ever seen a stumpy tail over here and didn't even realize there were actually 2 distinct breeds vs the same dog until a few years ago. They usually dock their tails in the States at birth, to add to the confusion.

Yeah they are athletic, terribly so, but one kick can kill them, one kick, a Queensland Heeler will shake it off and really give the bull something to regret! Heelers can't run with Kelpies, nothing will, they run over 50klm each day when working, but cattle don't need that sort of running, sheep do! You are correct about the Kelpies total lack of fear, but thats a detriment with cattle. Kelpies were specifically bred for sheep, and the huge flocks and runs of western Victoria. Queensland Heelers were bred for Cattle and the different terrain of Southern outback Queensland.
@markhill9275 I live in West Texas and I would imagine the terrain is somewhat similar to that in Queensland, or that's what we hear. The Heelers are pretty popular amongst Cowboys and Ranchers out here; Kelpies are not as common. I would suppose it depends on what you are using your dog for. I have noticed the Heeler is also a popular choice for the guys who are hauling the livestock in semis, and a dog who works in corrals loading and unloading is probably a different choice than the dog for moving a herd from 1 pasture to the next, ideally. I know they were bred to work sheep, but they seem to transition to Cattle pretty well also. From what I have heard, they have had people successfully herd Bison with them and even Reindeer in Finland. I have only had the 1, but like I say, she was something special. My dad sold the ranch before he passed, so I have hunting dogs now instead of herding dogs. There are some similarities, but also some differences. High prey drives and high energy levels with herders and hunters, but the prey drive manifests differently, for sure. I have a female German Shorthair who is also very athletic and tons of energy, but she weighs about 20 lb more than the Kelpie did and I think she would still be slightly faster. Personalities are very different, though. I hear Kelpies in general are surprisingly kind of sensitive and will shut down if treated harshly. Is that true? We had an employee for a short while who was heavy handed with dogs in general, and the Kelpie really didn't like him...
@MrRatlicker Sounds like your dogs are very lucky! Your short haired pointer may be faster, but i can guarantee even borders cannot run with a kelpie all day. As to being similar to Queensland, that depends, inland is very sparse and harsh more so than Texas, southern Queensland is prob the most like, coastal obviously isnt, far north is in the tropics. Got to remember Queensland is probably 3 or 4 times the size of Texas, so the terrain varies greatly. Kelpies are among the most loyal dogs in the world, more driven to please than by food even. They are as smart if not smarter than Bordersso if you try the heavy handed their stubborn streak comes out and they absolutely will shut down. They need constant work and mental stimulation,

All cattle dogs have tails. Australian stumpy tail cattle dogs do not have one. There is a difference!
