    Great idea. I spent an hour getting the length right! I have some Chinese useless sanding belts with overlapping joints for a Sheppach linisher. They now have a use. I used a piece of Ash straight grained and about 1/8” thin. All simpler with machinery. I cheated. It would have taken me a week with hand tool.
    Another great video. Keep them coming. 👍👍👍

    A good pair of forged scissors is a fine tool. Cut sandpaper from the back with a utility knife. You can turn a belt inside out. Great tool idea.

    Cuttin grooves is by far the best part of hand tool work 😁🤙

    Thanks, this is a good project I can do in my den during our cold winter. It’s already below freezing out in my shop so I’m hibernating inside where it’s warm.

    The important lesson I've taken away from this and your bow compass video is, don't overthink, over-plan or over-execute. You've got a good idea what you want and how fancy or precise it needs to be, so you just give yourself some wiggle room and have at it. That's what makes it fun, and probably builds confidence, amiright?

      Man, I could not have said it better myself. you hit the heart of this channel. that is what makes this sport so fun. there is no wrong way to do it just do what makes you smile!

    Yes, i love bow sanders. I need to make a few more. My style bow sander works with sandpaper that does not come in belt shape. I want wet'n'dry sandpaper so i can sand on the lathe with oil. That prevents so much dust from flying.

    "get a table saw!"
    But my Disston D8 custom recut and sharpened by bob page is nice, effective, far less likely to hurt me, and makes really really clean cuts

    Amazing James, you're a mind reader. EVERY TIME you use your bow sander I forget to ask you to do a video on it....Let's try an experiment. I am thinking of THE OTHER video I want you to make.....lol...cheers...rr

    You may already use this, but an alternative to double-sided carpet tape is the "making tape super glue trick." Carpet tape leaves a terrible residue. However, if you place a piece of masking tape on each face that need to be secured, and then put a few dots (or a line, depending) of super glue between the two strips of masking tape, it will secure almost immediately. It holds better than carpet tape and releases without any residue (unless you use too much super glue and it seeps past the edges of the tape).

    I dunno Man, my table saw is a lot of fun. I mean, it's like going into battle where life and limb are on the line...really gets the blood flowing!
    Ironically, and thankfully, the only saw I've ever hurt myself on was a hand saw (cut may hand - I suppose it was only doing what it was built for....)
    But hand sawing is fun, won't argue that.
    (but I enjoy sanding also, so my opinion is probably suspect at best)

    Wow, nice work especially on the plane knob. I am hooked on this bow sander but I will probably have to experiment with different wood types for the bow... btw: Just a non-woodworking tip. Please burn that little black statue you have in your workshop... It is a bad thing and I am talking from experience ...

    Hmm, a nice assortment of planes, and it's the first time that I've seen anyone use a 55. Since they're so rare, what would be a useful alternative?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 років тому +1

      you could make a plow plane or a groving plane. I have a couple videos on that. or you could just use a chisel and cut it out. or you could saw either side with a saw then remove the waste.

    • @adamwilson4834

      There's also a couple other Stanley combo planes. The 50 is the one I was just gifted, I'm hoping to get a set of cutters to go with it soon

    You keep talking about how you could use a bench hook. What is that, could you show it and how it's used? I am new to woodworking in general, and can't put a picture with the tool name.
    Thanks.

    • @WoodByWright

  • @rpederse

    James, in several recent videos, you’ve mentioned “knife walls”. I’m not a woodworker, but I’m curious and Googling wasn’t successful. At some point could you talk briefly about that?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 років тому +2

      +Bob Pedersen that might make a good video. A knife wall is a marking knife cut that the saw can ride in it also protects from tear out by the saw.

    I think you have given me the hand tool bug, I found myself heading to the bandsaw before deciding to use my pull saw. Do you have any recommendations on starter low cost western saws? The only ones I can find are the crappy universal saws.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 років тому

      thanks Scott that means a lot. for new saws, the only "cheap" option I recommend is the saws from Veritas. they feel great and they work perfectly and for the price, you can not beat them. other than that restoring old saws is the only way to go, but back saws are almost impossible to find.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  6 років тому +3

    • @anthonyoltmann3721

      The radius on the end caps can be varied so one side is fat for larger radius sanding and the other is smaller for tighter curves.
