To be honest, I don't think I ever even heard of him, but hearing him sing this--and a song like "I've Got to be Me"--I thought I was listening to Frank Sinatra! 😃
Steve Lawrence has always been my favourite singer. I am a 79 y.o. male and I have cherished his singing for 60 years. Steve Lawrence is the best singer that I have heard
Old s t e r s know what music was beautiful music beautiful words and they still use these songs for commercials pretty blue eyes the old crowd Lesley Gore go listen to that one again do yourself a favor and go listen to Lesley Gore the old crowd. We are lucky we have many friends that we've had for 70 years speaking for myself I have one for 73 years and all these beautiful songs from the 40s 50s 60s kick us all in touch with memories to hold dear forever you sure and I can't find that in any of the music that what they call music nowadays a good song like the land That Time Forgot by Kelly seek that and it will fit right in with all your 50s 60s thank you for your post
Steve ALWAYS, managed to deliver the goods, no matter what! All around performer. Always, an incredibly clean voice, with an easy going style. Never heard a bad thing said by anyone about Mr. LAWRENCE. Class act all the way! RIP, Steve and thanks for all that great listening music....
See him in Malibu Often he is a neighbor. One of the nicest souls one can ever meet. As is his wife Edie. One of the greatest singers that has ever lived.
Rest in peace, the great Steve Lawrence, the world mourns your passing, as do I. Thank you so much for all the music and all the love you gave us.😢❤❤❤❤❤
And it's a live version, Steve was too good to Lyp Synck (mouthing the words) because he and Eydie Gorme were from an era that we will never see again Ever Period!!!!!!!!!!
Steve Lawrence, the power behind the voice that could bring back the romantics in us during our memorable past to life and make our hearts feel young and in love once again.
Steve Lawrence, man what a voice! One of the greats....What happened to all this great music? Glad we have recordings and videos to relive it over and over. I missed this great generation by a few years. What a time it must have been...……….
I listened to this song so much growing up but I never knew what he looked like till now. Wow, what a beautiful person. That voice, that presence, and delivery. He’s incredible! It still gets me every time I hear this song. 😭
Steve Lawrence was simply put THE BEST. He beats them all in my view. Yes I said it.. His voice control, projection, range, crisp diction, smooth effortless delivery and ability to project proper emotional content is in a class by itself. He always holds the note strong, no rasp, cracks or drop off. The only other American male vocalist I have there in that category is Johnny Mathis another superb vocalist from that era. That's it. Steve Lawrence had it all.
Mr. Lawrence can sing any love song because of his beautiful voice. I have been a fan of his and his late wife for a very long time. When still living in NJ I saw them in concert. This will forever be a blessing for me. They bought the house down.
I'm also from NJ (originally), and while working in Manhattan, I had the chance to see them both perform - it was AMAZING. I've been a huge fan of Eydie Gormé since childhood, so seeing her live was a dream come true. But I must say, Steve brought the house down with a performance of a Yiddish song. The audience erupted in response.
I'm 63 .. I'm mostly familiar with him because of my mom. She showed us all music from all venues. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, RIP Steve 😢
One of the great American popular singers. And do not call him a "crooner." This is a rich, powerful high baritone. I'm sure that in his prime (perhaps even now), Steve could sing in a fairly big theater without a microphone; and everyone in the audience would hear him clearly
John Coyle: I'm 84 at this time... and like you 4 years ago, I feel the same feelings. I love Steve Lawrence's impeccable performance on stage- handsome, smiling and at ease on stage, glowing at his best. Indeed, to me he is the full package. Many of the songs such as this, I prefer him over Sinatra, Bennett, and other singers. I've seem and enjoyed many of his shows. Great entertainer. Salute!
One of the greatest male singers and Entertainers in the last 60 years. This song he sings gives him 3rd place behind,Jim Nabors and Jack Jones as the greatest singers of this song no doubt about it either Period !!!!!
What a performer! Great singer and what a sense of humor and personality. I also liked Vic Damon and can't forget my very first and still favorite singer--Gordon MacRae!!--maybe tied with Steve.
I think Steve Lawrence was often underrated. He had a clean, beautiful voice.
He was but when he and Eydie performed together especially in Vegas, they brought the house down!!!!!
@Philly MarkLXXII
Actually, my favorite version of this song was done by Jack Jones, one of the best singers of his generation, in my opinion.
His voice was powerful and so Beautiful. He was a natural. He held his own. "I Gotta Be Me" was perfection.
Steves best move was marrying Eydie. Singing with her was the dumbest.
To be honest, I don't think I ever even heard of him, but hearing him sing this--and a song like "I've Got to be Me"--I thought I was listening to Frank Sinatra! 😃

Have you heard Connie's live rendition on the Sullivan Show ?
Amazing performance. For me this is the best version of "The Impossible Dream"! Be blessed, Steve Lawrence!
Tremendously talented singer. Always enjoyed his music.
And it's a live version, Steve was too good to Lyp Synck (mouthing the words) because he and Eydie Gorme were from an era that we will never see again Ever Period!!!!!!!!!!

I loved his personality and great looks besides his talent, voice on stage!
As good as it gets.
I've loved Steve's work for dang near 50 years. May God continue to bless this great singer, great artist, great entertainer.
He was terrific but now that he's gotten older and with the devastating loss of Eydie Gorme, he'll Never Ever Be the Same !!!!!
Steve Lawrence, man what a voice! One of the greats....What happened to all this great music? Glad we have recordings and videos to relive it over and over. I missed this great generation by a few years. What a time it must have been...……….
