Wow Nathan just stumbled across your channel. This is amazing work. I am working on an E31 S85 swap and see that I may actually need to replace my Vanos pump! Definitely the line, but maybe the pump too!
Hey, you're making good progress so take your time and it will all come good. If you were in the UK I would say - its not as if you are going to be able to drive it anywhere for the next few weeks so just concentrate on finding the right parts at sensible prices.
Great work. I would vote to replace those two coolant hoses. Looks like those hoses attach directly to the engine. The top hose on my daughter’s 2009 328i separated at the plastic connector from the plastic dry rotting. Engine lost all coolant and overheated. Luckily N52 engine seems to be ok. I am sure you do not want that to happen to the M5. Good luck.
The cooling systems in good shape on it because it has a 79c thermostat and it runs much cooler than the non m counter part saving all the gaskets and hoses
For anyone interested, on the Redish Autosport channel they've just completed this job. Redish also replaced the oil sump with the newer dual-drain plug sump (extra oil drain is upfront), upgraded oil chain tensioners, upgraded oil spray nozzels/piston oil squirters, upgraded sprocket (longer teeth) wheel for the VANOS high pressure pump and BE con-rod bearings w/BMW bolts. Sheesh', I'm not sure if Nathan will go that far with this project but I'm very intrigued non the less . . .
I own one, I've done everything that he is doing and I bang the limiter all the time. I did break in the new bearings though. No hard pulls first thousand miles.
@@teflondonhks50caliberbarre72 look up highway 3, the guy in that video series drives his M5 harder than most people ever will and his is running beautifully.
@ Education has nothing top do with being able or willing to fix a modern M5 your comment is what is known in educated circles as a category error and if you think these are more fun than some of the simpler BMW's including M5's early M3's etc then I suggest you drive some of the earlier cars.
Good catch Nathan - this would defo have bit you in the proverbial had you not attended to all these things. Just goes to show you can't skimp on maintenance on these cars. PO must have lost a fair bit of cash on the price he paid vs sold. His loss is our gain, and hopefully yours too Nathan! :-) Keep up the great work
There is that ! Talk about your sorting a Car ! Love Great Job Nathan and i have to say what a interesting Motor system ! Learned enough to know I would only get this if the Price was right and you did that and have it for a Project ,while i drive My daily M3 06! LOL I know the M3 would be a Greater Project why not take a Vote ! Thx Mark
Another GREAT video! Please keep posting and/all detail on VANOS H.P. pump. Gears/mesh good? Have researched and new pumps have "longer teeth"?? Also great find on H.P. line from pump to distribution lines at water pump.
When you pull M62tu out can I just tie up the ac compressor , I'm not trying to mess with it and don't wanna put it back together to evacuate because it works good but there doesn't seem to be much room
Hmm finding parts is going to be tough. Try calling Bimmer Performance Center or looking up a tuning company in germany. You might find improved parts for this car there. I do not hear good things about GRAF in these performance engines.
Impacts are alot quicker unless your working on an older car and snap off bolts and then the quicker goes away when you have to drill out and tap broken bolts😖 But I agree it is a lifesaver when it comes to elbow and shoulder problems been there done that. Wonder how much of that leaky hose material is swimming around and plugging up things🤔 Been there to hoping someone did so maintenance on a high mileage car and in that case unless you can find out some history on the car you can wish with one hand and 💩 in the other you know the rest right Nathan 😁🐄💨
@@larryjohnson8168 If you plan on owning one you have to be prepared to maintain It. These can be daily but isn't suggested because parts wear and with high horsepower car its expected. If you think this is expensive you should try owning an AMG. lol
custom ones where you can press out the bearings because this junk doesn't last. why is it that my old datsun from 1978 has a/c idler puller bearings that are original? Its because they put in a good quality sealed bearing
Oh dear they certainly didn't make the e60 M5 to last. My e39 530d hoses etc are in pristeen condition and it has 200k miles at 17 years old no Knocking and original turbo
Love your videos man. Check that vanos pump and make sure it has the new style teeth on it. Apparently there was an old style gear and a new style. The old style was prone to failure. Here is the link www.m5board.com/threads/s85-updates-through-out-the-years.368186/
Hey mr. 2 subscribers get off Nathan's nuts.. he's doing a hell of a job it boggles my mind all the shit he can do. Take that fucking car apart and put it all back together wow I'm impressed

Reminds me of my restos...starts to dismantle something and other stuff reveals itself to be bad and the costs starts clocking up

They actually make that same fitting in aluminum instead of that crappy plastic! I've dealt with that issue as well
Excellent video Nathan this car is going to be awesome 😎 I’m glad to be a subscriber and member of your channel
The cooling systems in good shape on it because it has a 79c thermostat and it runs much cooler than the non m counter part saving all the gaskets and hoses
Love ur vids , just learning a lot of stuff for my bmw e92 keep up the good work
Try Rockauto on those belt pulleys. They have a bunch for E39 6 &8 cylinder that should work.

It will all be worth it when you floor it and listen to that engine.
I guarantee you as soon as he floor that will be the end of it that thing is going to blow up
noit wont there are more fun cars that are cheaper and easier to fix. These things are a nightmare to fix.
I own one, I've done everything that he is doing and I bang the limiter all the time. I did break in the new bearings though. No hard pulls first thousand miles.

I reckon this car has had a hard life and/or its done more miles than the odometer suggests. Good luck, loving the vids.
I had a little trouble with my radiator fan too, when I did the engine replacement on my E60 530i, even though not quite as much stuff in the way

Your a BEAST NATHAN! thanks for the info brotha!
Why did not you take the whole engine out? Would not that be easier for you. Great job Nathan

Love this project, autopsy of an V10...
Love the videos! can't wait until the M5 is "finished" lol
Mind blowing following this stuff!

Hey Nathan comparing doing the job on timing guides on M62tu vs s85 rod bearings which one is tougher to do on your opinion?
I think it maybe easier if you pulled the engine with all those issues? However how easy is it to pull the engine on these cars
I got all the pulleys from FCP Euro when I did mine a few months ago
4:36 where can I get an Impact like that? .. never had one that the Battery doubles as a Hammer..
I have 12 batteries so if i ruin one no big deal
What symptoms was this car having? I'm wondering if this is happening to my car because the idle becomes rough after driving it for a while.

Go to a machine shop and get aluminum pulleys made with high quality bearings, $200 max for a life time.
When people do not perform maintenance to these machine, they incur major expense.
This car is a nightmare don't get one of these, its like the d day landing
I switched to the BMW coolant haven't a problem since just a warning
At the end of the day, this is a 80k car in 06-10 with a v10. I’m not sure why people are expecting cheap maintenance on a race inspired engine

At this point seem a engine pull may have been easier considering a possible manual conversion
What do you consider a good brand for the idler pulleys? I’ve had fits with them.

FCPEuro has the pulleys available
Go to ECS tuning you going to find good stuff all made in Germany 🇩🇪
“Nathan you fat ass what are you talking about” I just spit out my coffee
I got a oem pulley At AutoZone, if they have one in stock, take it out of the box and look at the brand marking on it
Try ECS Tuning .com for those parts
Oh dear they certainly didn't make the e60 M5 to last. My e39 530d hoses etc are in pristeen condition and it has 200k miles at 17 years old no Knocking and original turbo
They replaced the belt,
These cars are so complex and difficult to work on, I’m happy I got rid of my E60 M5 3 years ago.
@e_millimill man I wish there was a lol emoji for your comment
Pain in the ass BMW.

You should have pulled the engine or at least pulled the front off.
You’re doing enough work on it to justify a partial rebuild. Might as well replace the crank seal while you’re at it.
Welcome to the me generation. Don't take take of shit don't know how and don't care. Sad indeed
He could run all the tests he wants soon as he floors it it's going to blow up again it's a BMW
Hey mr. 2 subscribers get off Nathan's nuts.. he's doing a hell of a job it boggles my mind all the shit he can do. Take that fucking car apart and put it all back together wow I'm impressed
That's very pessimistic. Once all the necessary work is done it will be great for another 60-80k miles. I've owned one for 2 years now.
@@mikemontenegro9426 he could start to work on Lexus IS oh yeah I forgot those cars doesn't break
Teflon Don HKS 50 caliber Barrett Lexus IS suck. They handle like poo and are slow.

Man this beemer is close to being a boat anchor!.
And people wonder why mechanics charge so much.
Very unorganized shop. Sorry but I take a pass on your outfit.
