    For anyone not in the know, decibels are logarithmic, so an increase of 3 decibels is double the sound intensity and a decrease of 3 results in the sound intensity being halved. For comparison, a jet engine is around 120 and a baby crying is about 110. So now you can roughly gauge how loud it is :)

    • @dftweedie3021
      @dftweedie3021 3 роки тому +7

      Good point ... but the doubling/ halving is 6dB, not 3dB.

      Juan & Spoof. It depends if we are talking perceived or physical loudness. Studio engineers generally rely on the physical measurement of RMS energy as that is the most accurate way to measure Sound Pressure Level (SPL). It is exposure to SPL over extended time that can damage your ears.
      Poll: Is 3 dB, 6 dB or 10 dB SPL double the sound pressure?
      This is not a trick question. This is not about the subjective perceived loudness of hearing and not how to add sound sources. SPL is the abbreviation for "Sound Pressure Level". The term loudspeaker and amplification is not specifically raised with the previous survey. It's all about sound pressure the most important sound value.
      There is only one correct answer: Twice the sound pressure is an SPL of +6 dB.

    • @fupzzzable
      @fupzzzable 3 роки тому +7

      @@dftweedie3021 the correct answer is 3 dB(A) to double the SPL. 6 dB(A) is the change in SPL if you double the distance from the source of the sound( 100 meters to 200 meters). To the majority of people 10 dB(A) is the subjektive doubling of the sound.

    Anything over 85 decibels over a certain amount of time, OSHA recommends ear protection. I’m 60, been riding off and on all my life, I have hearing loss and tinnitus. Just a cautionary tale, I would recommend wear hearing protection. But I know most young riders won’t think that this is important. I enjoy your videos. Waiting for my Rebel.
    I am a minimalist, so I keep things stock. Looking forward to seeing your next mods for this bike to make me change my mind.

    • @LifeOfBurch

      I’ve definitely thought about getting hearing protection, but need to make sure I can still hear what’s going on around me. @@luko560 yes, it’s the wind noise that is my problem. I ride with Bose IQ 20 wired earphones. Cuts the wind noise down to almost nothing and I can hear everything still. Earplugs have a NR rating. Earplugs reduces certain frequencies and yet allows you to still hear. If you would not be able to hear, they would not be recommended by OSHA or the Department of Defense. Great vid, fantastic exhaust! The cheapy you had on first probably caused an over-lean mixture which would affect the running. Even without the baffle (it's what we call them in the UK) you'll have significantly more back pressure and the motor will run much happier - might explain why you felt a little bit more power. Either way, your bike will love you for it. Keep up the great work with the vids - I'm subscribed!

Without it you have a hot rod sound and with it it's more of a big V-twin sound. I think the sound profile does change a bit with the silencer: it's a little richer. I'd probably pack fiberglass on mine. Loud exhausts sound great and the police love them too. I'd rather be a little lower profile with the way I ride.

    It sounds great, even though i cant get the full effect through video. The silencer is a good idea, as 85 decibels will damage your hearing after about eight hours, and the higher the decibel the faster it happens. I put the quiet baffles in my vance and hines to take it from a fluctuating 86-90 decibels at idle, down to a steady 80 decibels for this reason.

    Secure muffler mounting before tightening muffler. This insures you aren’t inducing unnecessary stresses in the pipe mount to the engine.

    Decibels (dB) are logarithmic usually on a scale of "tens". No silencer = with throttle at 112dB versus an idle of around 90dB, throttle-no-load volume is approximately 120x time louder than idle (every 10dB is 10x louder than the previous 10 marker; i.e. 20dB is 10x louder than 10dB, and 30dB is 100x (10x10) louder than 10dB, 40dB is 1000x (10x10x10) louder than 10dB, so on, so forth)..

    Hey chief! I love your Chanel. Would it be possible to do a decibel read at 50cm away from the exhaust at idle? These towns are cracking down on "noise pollution" and especially the harley guys are getting smashed with fines. Maybe town bylaws limit it at 92db at 50cm from the exhaust.
