EDIT: I enabled dev mode so that wiped it again, still broken.
EDIT #2: On further investigation, it appears that the issue resulting in a black screen with some videos was due to my phone shooting in H.265 despite the fact the option to do so was turned off.

ChromeOS 117 is supposed to be a big update with Material You.
If you do make a new video you should do it after getting 117.
Same thing in windows if you dont have codec installed.
I think Google is missing a trick by not merging Chrome OS and tablet Android or even docked Android to compete with Dex.

Just cracked open Dex for the first time. It's got me wondering why in the world Google is waiting on putting the ChromeOS experience on every pixel device. They are mostly identical.
If you notice even google phones can’t do hdmi out after all these years yet many androids can connect to a tv or display no problem.
@@robmalcolm8042 I've always used Samsung phones for the last 11 years, and everyone of them had HDMI out, so its wierd no one else does it. Heck, my old Samsung Note 2, you could use a usb-hub and connect external hdd's, mouse, keyboard, xbox controller, hdmi screen and run it as a computer.. and that was way before even Dex was a thing :)
Happy to see you revisit ChromeOS. My computing needs are basic, but I have noticed some glitches as well over the years. Every system has bugs, maybe Google's are worse. What keeps me coming back to ChromeOS, though, is its security against malware, ransomware, etc. If Windows could match that security, I'd probably use it more often. Maybe do a follow-up review in 4 - 6 months? Enjoy your content!

it has build in antivirus software called windows defender. however, chromebook arent usually targeted by hackers since chromebook has a small market comapred to windows so unlike windows, chromeOS devices are not very attactive for hackers to attack.
@@anywaytechreview There is a big difference between WIndows and ChromeOS. Windows is not even near the same level of security. ChromeOS runs in a sandbox. Chrome runs in a sandbox inside ChromeOS. ChromeOS uses a mirror of its known operating system which it checks against all the time. If the mirror doesnt match with the installation, ChromeOS will revert to the mirror version (aka, if a malware can go thru all the sandboxes...) so you have a fresh install again without malware. Windows on the other hand, you can make the user run a script that turns off the firewall for you, turn off defender for this app, and so on with ease. If you windows install gets malware.. no one notices.

@@tytownsend8219 all major OS do their update in the bg; incl. KDE, debian, win11, etc. the only one doing it your face is macos. I must say you switched topic from booting time to bloatware in the same breath.
I also like chrome os flex its much simple only downside the play store thing that i wish they enabled sometime
I like pros of ChromeOS, simple easy updates and runs well on low end hardware. I don't totally switch to it is Google being Google they try a lot of things but often don't refine over time.
I'm hoping the push to optimize tablet apps will help Android app implementations on ChromeOS and windows
Did you pick an x86 based Chromebook? Any particular reason why you chose that over the new ARM based ones (Mediatek Kompanio)?
I think the Windows 11 has evolved too well at the detriment of Chrome OS. I'd much prefer a modern Surface Pro or a modern (high-end) Surface Go than a Chrome OS tablet.
Windows 12 might make things even worse for Chrome OS if the rumors of it being stripped of its heavy legacy stuff while featuring a more touch responsive UI is true.
Android (and iOS) are better for smaller tablets in my opinion.

you have no clue. The VAST MAJORITY of Chrome OS machines are laptops not on tablets. (there are maybe 2 exceptions) Android and Chrome OS are NOT the same OS.

My chromebook has 8 gb of ram and a 10th gen i3 processor and everything mostly runs smooth.
I was gonna an Intel N6000 is low end for doing real work on a ChromeOS. Needs to be at least an Intel i3 with 8gb RAM.

I believe this is 'on topic', Shane. But have you (or any of your followers) found a way to assign _different_ Tabs to different W11 desktops? It seems impossible. My own research to do so having failed.
Currently Samsung Dex is more valuable than a whole Chrome OS.

I don't know if I would agree with this. The problem with DEX (I have an S8 Ultra) is you do not get full browser support. The only browser that works with extensions is Kiwi, and I find it VERY buggy and unstable. If Android/DEX supported a desktop version of Chrome, Edge, etc. it would make it much less limiting. Also, using the Android apps for Gmail, Outlook, Teams, SMS, and many others do not support spelling/grammar check. Those apps rely on the onscreen keyboard to provide spelling assistance. When you use the keyboard cover on DEX, all the spelling corrections go away. I find this maddening. I thought my S8 Ultra would be a pretty good laptop replacement, but I've practically stopped using DEX and keyboard because of these problems I mention. I now primarily use it for content consumption.
As limiting as a Chromebook is, you can at least use a full browser with all the extensions, and use web versions of most apps (which lack the limitations I mention above).
@@yankiefrankie Yes, Dex has plenty of drawbacks. The main one is Samsung itself: Dex was released with Galaxy S8 series and it is almost the same thing as initial release, no major upgrades. Fortunately Samsung does not give up on this thing at least (yet).
Have you tried Samsung Internet? It works pretty well on Samsung devices, especially on Dex
At the moment Android is a gimmick for big screens. The main use case is usually a media consumption. However foldable devices revived Android tablets and now there is more hope for Android for big devices to improve.
@@scaryifliteral In my opinion for browser based needs possibility of using a phone as a desktop when you actually need it is worthy than a carrying another relatively larger laptop/tablet.
I do not think current Chrome OS has enough features to overweight Android and replace traditional desktop systems.
@@azizdjanofficialDeX has seen *significant* improvements through many updates since the S8. The versions from then to now are worlds apart.
I love ChromeOS, but some stuff gets fixed very slowly. For example, on a locked touch device with PIN unlock enabled, the system sometimes loads the full qwerty on-screen keyboard on the lock screen but can't focus the PIN entry field, so you have to manually dismiss the QWERTY to see the PIN numeric keyboard. It's been like this for several years.
This drives me nuts! If I switch to the international on-screen keyboard, then it focuses as you would expect, and you can enter the PIN.

@@asher6657 Yep, but the on-screen keyboard numbers are not responsive in this situation. I have to close it and use the lock screen pin pad.
@@kenweber2162 Just out of curiosity, what Chromebook do you have? I have a Acer Spin 715 Chromebook, and a Lenovo Duet 5 tablet (with the detachable keyboard) and it can use the on-screen keyboard, or Pin-Lock with no problem.
@@asher6657 I have had several that are capable of tablet mode and have this issue. On the Duet 3 that I currently have, the scenario is to detach the keyboard while unlocked, and let it go idle and lock. After a few minutes, press the power button and the on-screen keyboard comes up. Try to enter the PIN on that keyboard and it is unresponsive. Close that keyboard and use the PIN pad behind it. This is when the on-screen keyboard is set to the default English layout. If you switch to one of the international layouts, then all is good. It's a minor glitch, but had to chime in when the OP mentioned it.
5:15 actually, ChromeOS have had that since I started using them in 2013 :) its just more options today. One thing that Windows doesnt do is that ChromeOS groups your "mixed windows", so if you open up the left one, the right one will pop up aswell.. which it does not do in Windows. Anyway. I use both Win 10, Win 11, Raspberry Pi OS and ChromeOS, and nothing comes close to how stable ChromeOS is.
Frist time user here. And quite frankly I enjoy chomeOS. I do same exact thing on my windows 11 machine. I turn it on first thing I click chrome lol. I like it for a fact that syncs very well when my OnePlus has a simple click to using hotspot,downloading pictures, see my recent tabs, security updates i still have access to everything else like my notes and WhatsApp messages same thing using the Windows machine i just find it to be a lot of quicker battery is amazing at least I have 10 hours of battery and I use it for work I use it for my studies it's the same thing having the windows 11

I really like my Chromebook and chromebox but i got so fustrated the other day with the OS last week i went and bought a ROG Flow X13 and a ryzen 7 mini PC to replace both and im so much happier. The OS has promise but im tired of waiting for it to get its shit together.
I like Chromebooks and have owned quite a few but usually give up on them as just not performing consistently or smoothly. Now I use a Tab S9 Ultra and my Pixel Fold... don't need a "computer" anymore.
absolutely hate my lenovo chromebook. multiple problems, cursor set at slowest level, don't click on anything but screen changes shoot by. I'll be writing a comment or email and when moving the cursor to correct or highlight a typo, the screen and comment are gone. when I use the arrows to scroll, the same thing- sometimes it will scroll in the right direction, other times it doesn't even do anything. Screens magnify without movement oir prompts. Lots of wasted time. Wasn't worth the expense
Chrome os is so tricky.
The hardware really does make the difference in stability, it shouldn't but it does. I worked in the local school system and experienced about 10 different Chromebooks this year. Tablet- the duet3 was the most stable. Laptop was the pixelbook go.
Dex made huge leaps in battery life and stability in the last year and half. I would skip tablet chromebooks completely and use Dex.
Chrome OS is my favorite OS ATM. More secure then Win, MacOS, iOS, Linux or Android. Its light and super fast.
A couple of things, whenever you have any issues like the ones you experienced during the filming of this video, did you restart it, I know it is a tech cliche, but it is the old reliable solution; secondly, you should enable several flag features to have a better overall experience, for example, check all the "revamp", "jelly", "Chrome refresh", "upload-office", "eche-swa", "eche-launch", just to name a few, I know regular user may not do this, but, you ARE not a regular user, and you already know how to access this options, wish nothing more than an excellent success and enjoy your day.
Restarted and even power washed. Beyond that, even spoke with Google PR about it lol.

Thanks for the survey of newer ChromeOS features. A couple you didn't get to is App Steaming which lets you fully interact with apps running on your phone and the updated Linux Terminal app which now includes SSH support, mounting both remote server folders and Linux vm folders into the Files app.
About your issues: Nearby Share is working ok between my Pixel 6a and two Chromebooks (2016 and 2022 models). Maybe this is a Bluetooth problem so try a hardware reset: turn off CB, hold Refresh button + press & release Power. For videos showing a black screen, I think this is a ChromeOS limitation rather than a bug since I got the same when playing from the Files app in both CBs and also from Drive in Chrome. What fixed it for me is disabling H265 support in the Camera Advanced Settings.

The device has been fully powerwashed and Nearby Share works better now, but is still weirdly unreliable.

The same video works fine on another Chromebook and worked fine on the Chromebook I used for this video the day prior. Powerwashing did not fix it and I've even spoken directly to Google PR about it and they currently have no explanation. I'm also not using H.265.
EDIT: Looking into this further this morning and it appears it was indeed an H.265 issues. While my Pixel was set to not use it, the video in question was indeed still in that codec.
I love my 11 inch Acer spin chromebook , the OS it's easier to use then my macbook air m2, you can play playstore games, and I love linux I am a fan of Linux, I like everything that is based on Linux.
Do you feel any sluggish in your system when opening android apps and playstore, especially after chrome os 116 update ? I feel that thing on my samsung chromebook 4.
Not that I've noticed, although some older lower end Chromebooks are definitely starting to feel slow for me. Not related to this update specifically.

I love Chrome OS. Honestly I do. But I'll be the first to admit that sometimes it is just a complete shit show. Not even a bad Beta version. Thankfully it does improve over time.

I talk about this a bit in the video, but the older Chromebooks I have are also pretty darn janky. I didn't test the Google Photos thing you see in this video on them though. It worked literally earlier that day.
I think Android Linux needs to integrate more features from KDE and Gnome. The Windows that you feel and experience it now, was copied from KDE and Gnome. Please note that Android, Chrome, Samsung DEX, KDE, Gnome are all based in Linux based kernel operating system. All mentioned are all easy based operating system from Linux based kernel. And the screenshot was a default app from Linux. Copied by Windows after intentionally bought the GITHUB a web based Linux app compiler.
I've developed a strong affinity for Chromebooks and almost exclusively use them, except when I need to use Windows for work purposes. The seamless synchronization of information and applications across multiple devices is truly appealing to me. It seems that this trend is poised for significant growth in the near future. 😄 While I'm just joking, it would be fascinating if Chromebooks could truly surpass Windows and Mac in popularity. My daily device of choice is the Pixel Fold.
This right here! I have Chrome OS Flex installed on my school devices. I love that I can log onto any machine and continue working. My office station, my classroom laptop, my personal Duet 3. Everything looks the same and syncs perfectly.

100% Both Google and Apple have been very hesitant to that. I almost think they should have just done that rather than trying to force Android apps to work on Chrome OS, which has been full of hiccups. Even Dex has issues rendering some sites properly?

Chrome Os is very fast with everything, windows and macos updates it takes a while and Booting and shutdown is also slow, and Linux is also more secure than windows and macos. cromeos it use the linux kernel.

Ok, basically Google made Windows. I think the strategy here is to create a very familiar software experience but convince users to switch based on price of hardware since Chrome is a ligher OS.
The main problem is Linux is an afterthought and it isn’t integrated into ChromeOS by default. You have to install it as a separate application. I like a mix of desktop and web apps but ChromeOS doesn’t allow to manage them because it isn’t a Linux desktop. I like working in the cloud but I also want to work on my desktop. Google really hasn’t done it and this is where ChromeOS falls short compared to modern Linux desktops. A browser based os is a very different paradigm from a desktop based os and how you run them is like the difference between day and night. People will either love what they offer or hate it. Based on my experience, I think ChromeOS doesn’t have to be a cloud os with Linux and Android added to it. That feels far from being cohesive, never mind user friendly in nature.
I owned a Pixel Slate and I would say, Chrome OS is super buggy few years ago. It's getting better over time but still quite buggy now!
