@@politonno2499 North pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica) are the 2nd largest on avg & max weight, it's pretty conclusive. North atlantic right whales (E.glacialis) are 3rd largest on avg weight, while the bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) are 3rd largest on max weight (which is similar to NPRW) but their avg weight is similar to NARW. Southern right whales (E.australis) have similar avg weight as fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) but higher max weight. So 4 of these baleen whales closely rival each other for the 3rd largest spot. Right whales IMO are the most underrated whales.

You're literally the first channel I've seen to talk sense about blue sizes. People often forget that animals as big as blue whales (or other huge marine life) have to feed such a large size. The ocean is huge, but it doesn't have infinite resources. At a certain, being to big can cost you. So glad you brought up the point about the biggest individuals of any species are usually outliers, and don't represent the norm. Loved this pal, great work. And thanks for the shot out!!

With the case of blue whales, I suspect the issue is less that there isn't enough krill for slightly larger sizes. It's likely to do with something physiological like how large their heart can get and still work well enough to support their body.

On people changing the measurement of something to make it a round figure:
One of the early surveys of Mount Everest found that it was 29,000 feet. The surveyors decided not to publish this as they thought the round figure looked too much like a guess/estimate. To get round this credibility problem they added a further 2 feet to give a height of 29,002 which they felt was much more believable, and published that.

Now the physics models say that elephants couldn't possibly reach 21mph. I'm curious how long that lasts...

Some footage of whales breathing their last after being beached, with people pouring buckets of water over them to try to keep them comfortable as they expire is extremely hard to watch because the animal is clearly so heavy that when she's not in an water medium she suffocates under her own weight. What an awful, slow, painful way to go! If you're big enough that you expire from oxygen issues in a buoyant medium such as salt water than that would be truly ridiculous size. Nature doesn't waste calories that way.

One must be cautious when applying scientific models, they are subject to revision by real world measurements. An example to consider are redwood trees, some individuals of which are demonstrably taller than models say are possible, as these trees exceed the height limitation timposed by how high that sap or water can rise from the roots by capillary action. Upon further study in light of the obviously exceeded model limits it was determined that the trees were all found in cloud forests, and were likely absorbing the moisture deposited onto the tree's uppermost parts by the nearly daily oceanic fog that condensed from moisture laden sea air as it rose in elevation on the mountain slopes where the trees were found. It must also be noted that there may be an active pumping mechanism that the trees are able to utilize that the model makers are simply unaware of. Nature can be complex.
Likewise, it is possible that blue whales have an as yet unrecognized mechanism that they have developed during their evolution that enables them to metabolize energy more effectively than is expected. It is surprising how little metabolic research has been done on the large whales - it simply is not possible to directly measure their metabolic efficiency ie oxygen intake, carbon dioxide expelled, etc.

Hey man, I love your videos but I was slightly disheartened to hear your careless comment on OCD.
I know it was innocent, and generally in line with the common stigma and misinformation around the disorder, but I just wanted to bring your attention to it as these little comments add up and only help to fuel harmful stereotypes.
OCD is not a fun, quirky character trait synonymous with neatness - it is a crippling and devastating mental disorder that takes a serious toll on the people suffering with it. I can’t tell you the constant mental and physical battle OCD can be, as it subsumes your whole life and turns your own mind against you.
When mine was especially bad, I had trouble even crossing the room without completing countless rituals to appease my intrusive thoughts, which were telling me if I didn’t then my loved ones would die and it would be all my fault. It is exhausting.
Although I’m sure no harm was intended, your comment helps perpetuate this misinformation surrounding OCD, which is already so bad and can make people like me feel incredibly isolated, misunderstood and alone.

I understand researchers need to try and secure funding, but the sheer amount of click bait "discoveries" where everything larger than a great white was the "biggest ever" gets annoying and almost always pre disposses me against the study.

Fin whale is not the 2nd largest. They are the 2nd longest but 5th or 6th largest in weight. North pacific right whale is the 2nd largest and north atlantic right whale is the 3rd largest after blue whale in weight.
