Thanks for the pics. Back in the 70's I was a Navy P-3 radar operator out in the west pacific ocean. We spent a lot of time flying around looking at ships gathering info like Name, flag, course, speed, and anything odd on deck. Had a lot of fun. We would run across the BIG tankers now and then. Their helo pads looked like a postage stamp on a football field, it was about the only size reference we had other than the time it took to fly the length of the thing a 180 kts. Called'em BFM big Fuckn Maru
Prachtig, prachtig, prachtig! Prachtige video.
Great video I recognise most of the places. Presently sailing across the Pacific on the VLCC British Progress 315,000 tonne, in ballast, Long Beach to Singapore, then onto the Middle East for another cargo.
Its actually not so hard steering huge ships like this. I remember when I was an OS and steered ships like this in and out of ports. The funny thing was that I used to steer (not drive) ships like these, but I didnt even have my driving license for cars :) For most of the times the helmsman (unlicensed seaman) just follows orders and executes them while an officer gives the orders. Its great fun to try out how the ship reacts , since youre mostly using the autopilot these days. Cheers.
As a captain of one of these ships its more a feeling of being out of control, rather then in control of the ship at all times... The time it takes for the rudder to produce enough energy to actually begin to turn the ship is so ridiculous new captains often overcompensate thinking they didn't turn the wheel far enough when in fact its just delayed... Sorta like driving on ice except in 1/100th speed... Uncle used to help navigate aircraft carriers, they're the same way.
@BlackParis86 many possibilities: or they are waiting for their turn to enter the port (possible as Tarragona is a very frequented port). Or waiting for the laycan, which is the time window given by charter during which you can load the cargo, but it should not be this as 7 days are a bit too much. Or waiting for orders (loading or discharge orders). Or iddle, which means they have no employement. Or last thing, they can be used as storage tankers, usually aframaxes and bigger. Hope this helps!
I've just started studying sea navigation. Hopefully in future I'll get to work on a crude oil carrier. I find them so fascinating, but bulk carriers are also on my list ; ] Cheers to all seafarers! ; )
Splendid, splendid, splendid! Ships can be very beautiful. A beautiful ship can emotion me / can make me happy. The musik is also beautiful. Splendid video.
@thesandonbar well it could be maybe 20-30 years ago (so called OBO vessels - oil bulk ore ) but not today...because of the very rigid rules from IMO, IACS and SOLAS. If you watch carefully you cant see a single pipe on the deck and also there are no transfer conections for cargo (oil). Defenetly is a pure bulk carrier.
so on oil tankers, how many does it take to crew it, and does everyone have there own rooms, or is it 2-3 a room, or barracks? how much would an entry level seaman make roughly? looks cool!
I agree with you//I spent 23 years with Texaco on their VLCC's//I left the sea six years ago because I knew my sanity was at stake(I was a Chief Engineer)//I'd advise any new recruits to the Merchant Navy to stay away from tankers;once you have the 'tanker logo' in your discharge book you appear to be given nothing but oil tankers//
@307OLDS I know, that Knock Nevis is the largest ship in the world, thus the largest crude carrier. Tho there is a difference between bulk carrier and crude oil carrier. Bulk carrier is a ship transporting solid materials, like coal, iron etc. Berge stahl isn't an oil tanker, but bulk carrier.
A queston for your sailors: What is actually inside of the front nose of a tanker? Just empty space or something else? I bet such huge tankers have a big torsion during heavy sea.
I find very large engineering structures amazing. COnsider this. This is the larges oil tanker ever built. Its capacity is 564,763 ton. There are 7.2 Barrels in a ton of oil. If you calculate the total capacity at 4 Million barrels thats just one day of Americas Oil Consumption.
At 3:37 its not oil tanker, it is BERGE STAHL. And many times there is port of Trieste, Italy. One of the ships in entring Trieste on pics "one with the blue wheelhouse" "Scotish... "
My dream is to work on a boat, but the school gives me a small..small chance to be a captain, i love the sea, i am watching deadliest catch every day, i want to use my live at the sea, i need help on how. Give me tips, thank you very much.
@MrRokkafella Thank you. I will do my best! i have almost been killed at the sea before at a sail boat, i know how rough it is. But i will take the chance no matter what happends.
I'm a engine cadet and i looking for an engine cadet job, i like oil tanker and i know that on board can get good salary when i will 3 engineer. Where can I find work? in which company can i get engine cadet job?
In Greece you graduate from highschool and then you are free to subscribe for to the Merchant Marine Academy and choose if you want to be a captain or an engineer. You pay nothing and you study for 4 years.3 at school and 1 aboard a vessel as a cadet. Its a sandwich course program so the 2st semester is at land the next aboard then a year at land and the other semester aboard again.
@RShack12 As a captain I would make the same amount of money every year.I mean a captain of a big oil tanker in a greek flag ship. Its hard to start if you don't have the money. If you study and be serius with classes and service you will suceed. Wish you good luck and calm seas!

The song combined with these pictures make these ships seem more majestic.
Im saving my money to learn offshore engineering!
thanks for uploading this inspirational video.!
Great video I recognise most of the places. Presently sailing across the Pacific on the VLCC British Progress 315,000 tonne, in ballast, Long Beach to Singapore, then onto the Middle East for another cargo.
Very nice video with splendid vessels. Thanks for making it!
hey mate! thanks a lot for posting! brilliant video with brilliant music!!!! i love this vessels and the sea! :) 5*
Brilliant video, my mate who is an artist is going to paint me a massive pic of Jarre Viking. Thats a true mate!
Would love to work on a ULCC (ultra large crude carrier) one day. They're beasts that no other machine can ever rival.

Just return after a 6 months contract in Brazil.Already missing my suezmax tanker.Greetings

@ciesscholten glad that someone mentioned that.....i think it is Norwegian flagged isnt it?
Very nice video; thanks for putting it up here.
i'm giving my live for these vessels....proud to be a oil- chemical tanker seafarer !!!
@thesandonbar

It is called a bulbous bow. On most ships, it is part of the forepeak tank which containes ballast water. On some other, it is a void space.
Its still in use but not sailing anymore. its an FPSO, floating product storage offtake.
that means its just being used as a floating tanker.
_Tankurōrīda!_ (An oil tanker for you!)
@TGV1337 What do you mean biggest bulk carrier in the world??? The Knock Nevis (a.k.a. Jahre Viking) is the largest crude carrier ever.
Indeed. However the biggest ship constructed from the keel was the french battilus(414m -555.000 tons)
Thank you for your explanation. Now I know what you mean. Success with everything.
yes , after the conversion(a 50 meter section was added during repairs after it was attacked at persian gulf)
@cupo2000 they use those when they load very thick oil, don't they?
@ineedyourheart11 It's "Coldplay" with "Speed of Sound"...
GREECE 1ST NAVY POWER IN THE WORLD....WE ARE PROUD
@flyer203 in malaysia we only study for 3 years.. 1st,2nd, 5th and 6th sem at the academy, 4th and 5th onboard ship..
ure a seafarer too?
At 2:22 I think she is an ore carrier, not an oil tanker, of Bergen Rederei...even if I am not sure.
Is there any chance I could come and have a look at your tanker next time you're in Britian?
i believe those ships will never run out of fuel
A queston for your sailors:
What is actually inside of the front nose of a tanker? Just empty space or something else?
I bet such huge tankers have a big torsion during heavy sea.
Does anyone know the title of this song? Perfect video!! :D
Me too since a am working on this kind of vessels since my youth (cadet).Regards!
2:22 made the vid totally worth the watch!

What happens if one of these gets into a sea storm? They seem too big to be affected.
How do you drive them and what's it like?
no man.. i'm still a student of norwegian shipowners association here in Philippines.
Super Slide Show, Coldplay paßt!!!

some how oil tankers made you think of coldplay?
Man that depens.Anyway tankers are more solid than bulkcariers due to smaler hatches.Greetings
well put together,good job

@flyer203
Yeah, that "paying nothing" for stuff is working out great.
thatnks for the awesome coldplay song
The vessel shown on 2:22 is the Berge Stahl, the biggest bulk carrier in rhe world and absolutely not an oil tanker!
vahre viking is a awesome norwegian oil tanker
Man...you run anything in saltwater and it's expensive. I have a 21 foot boat. I can't imagine the upkeep on those tankers.
I've always wanted to drive one, have you?
What is the song called thats played in this video?
@dpowers88 its coldplay isnt it?
yeah. if they are high they are unloaded. but if they nearly sink, they are loaded.
hmm... thanks for the great explanation!
@Prestologs You didnt miss much. If you want even a short time ashore stay away from tankers.
2:26 is "Berge Sigval" the biggest bulk carrier, not a tanker
the name of this song please?
What is the name of this song ???????????????
I'm a engine cadet and i looking for an engine cadet job, i like oil tanker and i know that on board can get good salary when i will 3 engineer. Where can I find work? in which company can i get engine cadet job?
THIS ONE IS WORTH WATCHING!!!
the song is Coldplay - Speed of sound
I think it's coldplay but I don't know the name of the song
berge stahl has been in rotterdam and i wasa there and it's a bulk carrier try at the internet

too bad they're not all tankers...
at 2:23 is a bulk carrier (Berge Stahl)

Never worked on a tanker. Did I miss something?
wow... such big business... blows my mind.
@RShack12
As a captain I would make the same amount of money every year.I mean a captain of a big oil tanker in a greek flag ship. Its hard to start if you don't have the money. If you study and be serius with classes and service you will suceed.

What song is this???
Ive always wanted to take the wheel of a tanker.
Plenty of times.Althought the "driver" as you call him is the quartermaster an A.B.
It's my job actually (Chief Officer) on tankers
what's this song ?
Great video.... but somehow its not moving...
The ship at 2:22 isn't an oil tanker. It is bulk carrier
You should do one about tanks and call it 'Tank'.
my father had been working for Livanos and Goulandris for 35 years...
on 2:22 it is not a tanker...its a bulk carrier...you can see the hatch covers
