My parents told me they saw this movie back in 1974, and the audience was laughing very hard for several minutes after this scene because nothing like this had ever been done before! Thank you, Mel Brooks. :)
For those too young, this scene was revolutionary. In the 50-60's there were many TV show cowboys. We grew up on Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, etc. All had scenes around the campfire with them eating beans, it was a staple. This scene literally "blew" them all away. Genius
This is both mine and my father's favourite comedy out of all time (although he enjoys this particular scene more than I do). He watched this at the cinema in 1975 (I believe it was) when he was 15 years old - at this scene, he laughed so hard and uncontrollable his friends had to literally carry him out of the cinema and place him on the pavement so he could laugh it all off for a while. They nearly called an ambulance 'cause he couldn't breathe. That's a sign of success, Mr Brooks!

Never laughed so hard in my life when I watched this for the first time when I was 12! I was NOT ready for this scene!
Lmao there was an interview for the Blazing Saddles DVD where Mel Brooks talked about this scene, and that for the first few years this movie was gonna be played on TV, they wouldn't allow the farting so they had to edit it out. The result was what you would call a "cowboy ballet": several grown men seemingly moving around, squatting, and standing up for no apparent reason.
The TV Version is pathetic....no N Words, no cussing, no farting....not sure why they bothered.....it was, when shown on TV, just a shell of the movie and it's funny as Hell intent...

I think that farts are so heavy that they would fall to the ground before reacting to open flames, unless someone was aiming their butt right at the fire before blast off.
The flame has to be right next to the anus. Seen people liting their farts at a party once.
From that wonderful, wonderful era of subversive, belly-laugh, face-hurts comedy. I'm not sure anything beats Blazing Saddles.

Absolute funniest fart scene ever done in a movie!! I nearly peed my pants as a young teenager watching this on the "Star Channel" when cable first hit my hometown circa 1975-76. I still crack up watching this like I was a young teenager again. Movie Genius + Edgy movie theme + Racey atmosphere = Mel Brooks!!

When my sister and I saw this at the theater when it first came out....this scene was the best. I think we both laughed until we peed our pants, and cried.
Remember seeing it at the pictures when first released. Mates and I fell about laughing so much we stayed for the second showing. Cycled six miles home that night still laughing, good old school boy humour.

The first time I saw this in the theater when it was released, the entire audience was in hysterics at this part...this is classic, one of my all-time favorite films! I also remember some well known movie critics of the time highly praising this scene in their reviews, LOL

When I seen this film for the first time in 1974 I was 11. In NY at that time, there were no multiple theaters. Just one big theater with an upper balcony totaling about 400+ seats. It was packed. I never heard a movie theater so loud with laughs I only heard like the last 3 farts. I still had tears in my eyes. To a kid, farts were always hilarious. I never laughed so hard in all my life. I could'nt catch my breath.
This paved the way for lots of awesome fart humor that would come later in crude TV shows, especially Family Guy. I like Family Guy and The Cleveland Show. Peter and Cleveland are master farters!

The first time I saw this movie, I was 7 yrs old and my sister and I were laughing our heads off at a drive in. Our parents were smart-they didn't have to pay for a babysitter, and my sister and I didn't understand any of the jokes anyway. One of the GREATEST MOVIES EVER MADE.

Mel reported that when he first showed it to the "suits", they went pale white, and tried to bury the film. He and the other writers brought people off the street to screen it for them, and they say, the roaring was so loud, the "suits" came out of their offices to see what the commotion was.
Blazzing Saddles was put on the fast-track for release at that moment.

I saw the AFC tribute to Mel Brooks. They did a clip where he mentioned loving Westerns, but always noticed how those campfire scenes were silent and thought to himself "Someone has to drop the other shoe..."

Super funny clip from one of my all time favroite comedies that I own my own copy of. I love this type of bathroom humor and it makes me laugh harder if someone lets one on the air for millions to hear and that person becomes embarassed that let the fart. Thanks for the great post here on UA-cam.

I was in about the 7th or 8th grade when that movie came out. A friend and I walked to the local theater to watch it. We both laughed so hard at that scene that I still chuckle when I think about it. I'm almost 51 now. I miss Slim Pickens. He was classic!
Blazing Saddles is on of the greatest flicks you'll ever see. My parents told me it was great, I was like, yeah my parents think it's cool, it must suck, but it was GREAT! Just be open-minded about it, it's hilarious!

I remember watching this movie many years ago, I was unable to laugh properly due to my perants being in the room. As I got older now the laughing was never an issue, its a great scene.

Took a girl to this movie on our very first date. During this scene, I was laughing so hard I didn't notice that...she wasn't. It was years before she admitted that she really didn't care much for the movie and couldn't understand what I found so funny. We're coming up on 35 years of marriage now, I still laugh during the scene, and she still shakes her head.
The reason they wrote this scene is thus: One of the tropes of Westerns is that you always see the cowboys eating beans and drinking black coffee around the campfire.....but we never hear "the results".....Still one of THE FUNNIEST SCENES ever!!!
