I've purchased one of these for my daughter, but the pen and/or touchpad doesn't seem to be working as well as it should. you have to press very hard. Any tips on how to improve pen/touchpad performance?

It could be a number of things but I would look at the pen first before tearing down the overall system, so here are my suggestions for you that I hope helps:
* Clean the port that holds the pen with IPA or contact cleaner, to access the port for the pen, I have attached it to this video. (Skip to 12:10)
* If this does not work, then it could possibly be due to a dying capacitor that needs to be replaced inside the pen. Removing the Sega logo on the pen will give you access to the screw to open up the pen and then the board.
