Sounds like the sprockets are eatin through the rail bushings. These machines were ahead of their time, with the rear mounted radiator, better operator ride and view.
Nice job guys I have always loved Detroits diesels and this Terex one is a beauty! Like was said she need some new drive parts but what a cool Machine!
8V-71 sounds healthy but a bit heavy on the fuel smoke. Check the air cleaner or what's the chance this ol guy has ever had an overhead? Advice from an old but still working Driptroit mechanic - there's lots of reasons to warm it up at a medium idle before you jam your fist down it's throat. Don't turn going backwards, sounds like it wants to spit a track, forward turns only will save you the agro!
Because that Dozer has set so long, you should have dumped around 5 gallons of number one diesel fuel into the old heavy number two fuel that had been sitting in the tank for a while. That would have thinned it sufficiently to where you did not have to spray a ton of starting fluid. Also your smoke would not be so dense or heavy. Also it would have been good to let that thing run until it was up to full engine temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes then move it because all the fluids in it from sitting so long would be older heavier and they needed to warm up and thin out. You are very fortunate that after spraying all that starting fluid into the engine that the Rings did not spin and break and that that engine would start running off of its own oil and run away. I love those old machines!
Two stroke? Looks like a diesel to me. There is is no two stroke diesel.Engine wide open traveling. Looks like cold start to traveling wide open in video. I been operating 25 years. Gotta let a Diesel to warm at least 5 minutes to allow to reach operating temperature. Also must let cool down 5 minutes to allow turbo to cool down. Will shortin life of turbo if not. Will destroy bearings in the turbo if not.
@Ray Lamp no you are wrong my friend. Maybe a two cylinder. But not two stroke. If it was a two stroke you would have to mix oil with fuel like you do a weedeater. I have a Cummins
Excessive idling and lugging will ruin it just like multi grade oil will. Green leakers have to be run at their full governed RPM and use monograde SAE oil in them.
@@adjustablehammer3749 Excessive idle will cause the engine to cool down to the point the fuel will only partially combust/ burn and it will essentially "wet stack" as they call it and seep out the exhaust among other places. Unburned fuel could also cause internal trouble getting past the rings and into the oil or sludge up the air jacket around the cylinder block even worse than normal. The owner's manuals always say never idle more than 5 min. The Detroit powered busses were equipped with a hand throttle to remedy long idle periods.
Having been a heavy diesel mechanic for over fifty years an many of them on Detroit's the correct and only oil is low ash SAE 50. NEVER USE ETHER OR STARTER SPRAY, the best way is to use a length of wire with a bit of rag dipped tied to one end dipped in fuel set alight and held over the air intake. As for the idle time a maximum of five minutes otherwise the airbox gets choked with oil and if the airbox drains get blocked the pistons will suck in the oil resulting in a run away engine and I used to fit a fast idle solenoid to bump the revs up to 700 RPM if sitting for a while, any more than 700 RPM the engine will go to full RPM if it is not fitted with a NVS governor.
I've always used Delo SAE 40 in the 4 units we have with good success; gets a little cold in the winter for 50wt here. I know a lot of folks further south or even in the summer used 50wt. Yep sulfated ash content has to be low otherwise they'll wear rapidly. Rotella despite making a monograde, their ash content is actually slightly over the threshold Detroit published years ago. I also know of some older genset sites that are using 15w40 for their 92 series standby gensets but I think its probably a bad idea.
I second the reply on using Delo SAE 40 weight. The manual recommends 30 wt but since I only run the 6-71 during the summer months, I went a little heavier with 40 wt.
More compact engine like all two stroke engines. They go forever if you work them hard and keep the fluids up to them. This is the best sound of the lot the natural 8V71
Engine can have the drive on the front or back… so it’s options are limitless You can drop it in a semi truck generator boat engine ect and basically do very very little modifications

@@jarodwilson9481 I was always told when working on the farm to let 'er idle a bit to warm up the fluids etc before moving. we had temps well below freezing and well below zero in Marathon New York and would often just fuel machines up and let them idle overnight so they would be ready in the morning. @@klutchdust4346 idlings not very good for an engine as there's not much oil getting splashed around the cylinders to keep them lubricated, leading to premature wear ,start up and run at a fast idle has got to be better than slower speed ,a lot of engines say don't idle for more than 10 minutes, our Cat dump trucks used to rev up for couple of mins if you left them idling for long
It'll get happier and happier though. Sure, could need a rebuild and work on the injectors and pump. But usually, if they will run and have positive throttle control, you're good. If it wanted to run away, then the internals are so badly worn it sucks engine oil past the rings and uses that as fuel.

I agree with everything you have said . Talk about luck aye ..
Love the sound of an old Detroit diesel especially on a classic Terex dozer!!
I agree 👍
Love to see it restored to a useful machine again. Great video.
We have another one that is in better shape and is being used daily this one sat for 10+ years and was ready for retirement when parked
Told the wife we need one , you know to keep the gravel spread on the drive.
Thats a big job. Better get a D11
well it runs,I would say the track chains, growser plates, carry rollers, undercarriage rollers could do with some loving..
I think I would have let that thing warm up for a while before I moved it. Considering it's been sitting for a few years
Another reason they used drtroits GMC was parent company of Detroit diesel and terex / Euclid
I love seeing this stuff come back to life!
I think that on the right hand track the nitrogen track tensioner needs recharged.
I think the sprockets are done that track didn't look that loose
He’s actually correct the nitrogen was low but sprockets are worn bad but dozer was parked for a reason
how awesome could of been sitting for 10 plus years , old fuel also machine is like that was a nice rest now lets get to work
Looks good as is rust old paint reminds you of the past
Хороший трактор, Он всё еще работает
You need to throw a desepticon sticker on there
Little maintenance and itll be good as new. I loved seeing it drive right over the tree thay grew up
The Jimi sounds great
It runs and drives. Nice job.
Que maravilha em ver funcionando essa brutona top
Guy on side of machine: drop the blade

that's a beast of A bull Dozer was is it clunking on one side

Definitely needs a service and run the rack
Needs more than that been sitting a long time. They always get parked for a reason

@Ray Lamp for example. Crank a chainsaw and run wide open without letting it warm. Rings will break and you scar the cyclinder.

That Detroit sounds a little sick
Chevyinmyblood1987 they junked it out using all that ether
Ruined by ether..it makes me sick to see all that stuff being squirted in. May as well fill the crankcase with sand
I'd say it was probably shot when it was parked...iv seen alot more ether than that go into these engines and they were fine
Yes that's why it was parked. Just old tired bird.
Should have let it warm up first before revving the shit out of the engine
The beauty of a 2 stroke diesel. Sounds like 4K rpm when its actually 2K.
New sprockets turn the pins and bushes new rollers that'll help and that last push sounded very whiney in the trans or finals but it's all fixable
Awesome video.
Rear end is due for some dental work.

Not to be inappropriate but this makes my sticker peck out
Extremely inappropriate, disgraceful comment😮 but yeah your right
What sort of job do you have getting parts for this old beauty?
Theres a guy in ohio who has all the parts and seals for these machines

What?
Oh sweet Detroit!!!! Love it!!!
