After losing my factory job I had for 35 years I got my CDL through the state for being a displaced worker. I started at Roehl with the intent of doing a year or two of OTR and finding a local driving job. After six months my wife had her fill of my being gone and so did I and I quit. I was 55 years old and no job. I applied for a city bus operator job for the city of Toledo OH and was hired immediately, the CDL was a huge help even though I had to retest for the passenger endorsement. Was paid for every minute behind the wheel and for sitting in the bullpen on report, I was not the only former truck driver there and retired after 10 years.

In 2006 they tried to get you to lease a truck.
The only way you could possibly make any money was to lease and drive as a team non stop.
      I rode with a trainer who’d leased.
He gave me all the in and outs but I know they made no sense and weren’t profitable.
Luckily I decided against it and he drove until his lease was up and he left.
I’m still fb friends with him till this day.
He said it was the smartest thing he did was to get out from under his lease.
He said he would go broke unless he had a trainee or 2 onboard at all times.

I worked for them as a trainer and kicked drivers off the truck all the time. I would tell them to meet me at the yard at a specific time to start their phase 1. If they were not there with in 15 mins of that time I failed them and left. I would get to the yard to drop off my current student and take a 10 hour brake so I would be fresh for the new guy and was always under a load when changing out drivers so I couldn’t wait for them. Besides if they can’t be there to start on time they can’t be expected to make their deliveries on time.
I had some real scary students; 1 guy pulled a knife on me because I told him he had to drive a full shift not just 4 hours. Another student I caught smoking crack, another guys drive off and left me at a test area when we stopped to hit the head. Never checked to be sure I was back in the sleeper when he got back. He drove past me totally oblivious to what was going on around him as he drove off. Had my cell phone and everything else in the truck. I had all students leave their
Phones in the sleeper while driving to avoid distractions. Had to call the state police and send them after the truck to tell the guy to turn around and come back for me. And it only got worse from there. cRE wasn’t scrapping the bottom of rhe barrel they where digging under it to put asses in seats.

I started out at England in 2016. I got on the trainer track and started training six months in. I know a lot of people freak out about people who start training early, but at least in my case, I stood by it. Training brand new drivers is an amazing learning experience. But in addition to that, I was new enough that I could get into the heads of new drivers. I went on to train again in the future, but I was better at it when I was new. Anyway, I was at England for a year and a half, out for 5-6 weeks at a time, home for a weekend. My next job was a big pay raise, running solo, low stress, five days out. I should have gotten out so much sooner. Now I'm running local, making six figures on 50-55 hours a week. Know your worth, folks. There's good jobs out there. They're even sometimes at the big carriers. Just gotta find em.

It's been like that since I've been alive 49years..once you know too much in any industry your not hire-able...They call it over Qualified...Basically don't want you coming in strong minded know just as much ,most of the time even more than a lot of the Bosses, associates...Your supposed to have started your on business at that point..In trucking you can speed that process up by decades...Absolutely anybody can drive a Rig in a week or so of training..Question is who will last...10-10 Truckers can become Dispatch and brokers but 1 out of 10 brokers/Dispatchers can become (Truck Drivers)...The only way is to out preform by staying out 2+ months at a time, once any Trucking company tries to cut my pay I leave...also stay away from Driver/Mill companies..Go with a small fleet company or a nitch like fuel/oil fields etc...Get hired Directly from the place your drop&hook at [Walmart] you'll be treated much better all the way around

This is the case with so many companies. They forget all too quickly, when things go south, who got them where they are!... and it ain't the noob, straight out of school! For this reason alone, many companies are eliminating their overhead, getting rid of experienced drivers, bringing in shit talent. Then the "new, inexperienced" drivers cost them more money in damages, late fees, no shows, complaints ( both customers and drivers), OS&D category, wear and tear on their equipment, CSA scores go through the roof. Then after the "new" school guys have run their course, these companies look for "new, old school" talent, bump the pay up, but keep all the stupid rules and regulations and ball busting morons in charge, who require you to work overtime for shit pay, drive the once new, now shitty equipment, work holidays and weekends, and sacrifice your home time and good benefits to serve them. These companies can't understand, that it was their 1st step in cutting good drivers, that ruined them for life and put them in this endless cycle.

Most companies average $80,000 to $120,000 yearly. I'm doing crude oil out of pecos texas, average $2500 to $3500 weekly. So many drivers don't last long because they feel they are over worked. When i was a driver we had to fight for fair pay on the walmart account because people who worked the account for 2-3 years were still getting paid the same as someone coming into the account straight for CRE joke of a school. So we had a tier pay put in place for the drivers that you got s pay raise every year on your loads until you maxed out at 8 years plus and that was because when CRE AND WALMART sit down and talk contracts, walmart always wanted less from the CRE drivers. So if i were you bro, if you can, apply for the walmart dis in porterville. They will grant your years driving for the walmart account and might even bump your pay. Give it a try. Had a “trainer(only been driving 8 months)” come pick me up and we went from waxahachie to North Carolina, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania to Oklahoma in 1 week. They sent me a check for $65.38. I left the “trainer” in Oklahoma. Haven’t looked back. That was in 2017 so it will be off my credit next year. “ They train, they hire, guaranteed”. What’s also guaranteed is you will be in every state, but you won’t even be able to afford 1 dinner plate. Drivers who shouldn’t even be driving a car will get their CDL there.

Just know that many states are now trying to pass legislation that will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a CDL. They're already allowed to get a regular driver license in more than 20 states. Our borders are wide open and these people are willing to work for extremely low wages. Once that happens, driving a truck will become a minimum wage job.

Let me give you insight on dedicated accounts. CR England has a contract with Walmart, which means they provide trucks and drivers specifically for them. Since you guys experienced a pay cut, I'm guessing the contract ended and was renegotiated. If that's the case, considering the current freight market, it was probably renegotiated at the current freight market rate, which is lower compared to before. Many mega carriers that have dedicated accounts ending this year or next will likely face the same outcome. Now a lot of companies driver will feel what the owners operators are feeling on current situation.

You are correct about the evolving door and getting rid of skilled labor. I’ve seen this in other labor markets, particularly health care. A corporation came in and laid off all the higher salaried, skilled employees. Then turned to new low experienced workers, from housekeeping to physicians, to manage the hospital.
What’s crazy is the government went right along with it. Same thing is going to happen to trucking. Corporations will seek out lower skilled, exploitable employees.

I met a new CR England driver on a dollar general account while I was with Werner. I by no means loved Werner but they guaranteed me 1400 a week minimum at the time as long as I was on that account. The CR England guy was capped at 700 a week on that account. If they dropped a rolltainer they would be charged 50 per rolltainer. They couldn’t keep CR England drivers ok that account and it showed why. For the labor and bs and that pay … it’s sad. Companies treat new and experienced drivers like shit. We’re all expendable. There’s no “family” or rewards for “loyalty” at the end of the day were a necessary cog in a poorly maintained machine and if they think we can be replaced to up productivity or increase profit we we will be.

I guess maybe things have changed with what you're saying about getting 1hr of highway time but this past April of 2023 they were allowing us to get allot of highway time in. And when I asked if we (the driver who make them their money) eat for free, they guy in the black vest literally laughed in my face. That, and the way they want me to make these tight ass windows for delivering, not having our(the drivers) back when problems come up, and getting mad if I stop to shower after being snowed on or busting my ass in 100° weather. Needless to say I am currently applying for anything else.

Your focus is more on being a company man for these big companies that look at a DAC and a bunch of unnecessary BS for the hiring process, rather than smaller companies that treat you better, pay better, Don't have cameras and trucks, don't micromanage you, and are more worried if you have a clean driving record, can pass a drug test and a quick driving test. Maybe it's cuz you're new I don't know but one of the first big steps you need to take is stop thinking of all the big companies that come to mind to work for

And seriously consider the UPS feeder seasonal truck driver position as something you could probably start like ASAP, And there is a good chance not guaranteed of course but that they will keep you on. England produces drives at an industrial level, works the new drivers to the point they quit with in 6 months to a year if you get past that, and you're a good earner they work you to the point you want out too, and that was when you could actually get real mileage not like today low mileage and even lower pay

My buddy and I worked for a company in the Bakken Oilfields. We were driving to the East coast to return two rental trailers and stopped somewhere in Pennsylvania to do our 30 minute break. On the way out, a truck pulled up next to us and asked if we could help them.
Brand new rig, team drivers, brand new trailer, out of Canada and they were out of DEF and didn't know what was wrong. Being that we worked in the Bakken, we always carried extra everything, my buddy emptied his plastic jug of DEF into their tank and we explained to them how to go back to the fuel pump and fill their DEF tank.
I could understand not knowing what a DEF was back in 2010, maybe, but in 2017....not so much.
I would like to know if the owners of CR England go to work and sit there for hours with no or little pay.....I bet not, but that is what they want for their drivers. Same old story and sadly, it is not only going on in the trucking industry.
