Regarding Matt Sydal/CM Punk, I don't know how many people know that these two came up together in the indies. Both got their big break in IWA-Mid South and are pretty good friends. Matt doesn't get enough credit and Punk fed a ton to him to make him look good.
If i remember right the bobby fish wasnt supposed to kick out at all but he did it intentionally to try and make himself look strong in defeat and thats why punk looked a bit shocked. I might be remembering it wrong though.
For Punk to come back after so long out, I thought his early stuff was actually pretty good, and he got better as he went. Just skimmed through and fair scoring on the whole in my eyes, if a bit negative in areas. For me you can see in the first 10-15 he was putting over other talent by making the match competitive, and that meant some pacing issues/things went a bit long, but it was a rusty veteran versus pretty green rookies, so I rein in my expectations personally as a result.
Yep this is an accurate take. He said on many occasions that he was coming back to help the young stars in that locker room and he actually tried. Unfortunately for Punk, he was sometimes in the ring with people that had never been in actual wrestling matches before that weren't just spot fests so there were some botches. He would also make people look good just for them to be forgotten by booker of the year Tony Khan the next week. I'm not sure I ever saw Lee Moriarty again after the Punk match.

Punks AEW run could’ve been better if he had a competent booker. Idk why AEW felt the need to have his matches run so long. AEW cannot learn that less is more.
Very much appreciate your work as always, Marky. Another great video. One thing I would say though, is you left out a lot of contextual points. Don't you generally put promos and storylines into a ROH evaluation? He had a lot of great work with MJF up to the dog collar match. A lot of drama with Hangman. The bad storyline with Mox/Punk at the end, pre-All Out.
Yea you’re right I do. But I have zero faith this video won’t get blocked and I already worked on it for three days. And other than the mjf storyline his promos were also a b for me.
Obviously I’ve dealt with copyright in wresting since 2018. I’m pretty much an expert on it. I will let you all know if AEW treat me different to WWE etc.
Hangman hits a WICKED GTS. He should use that now that Punk's gone. Punk shit all over Hanger a few times, badly, and Hanger hasn't said a thing about old Phil, he's just let him stew. In their match here, Punk looks all pissy and can't believe he would be booed, or that empty headed Hangman would have split the crowd 50-50, and it's Hangman who actually gets the crowd to turn on him and go for Punk by doing the GTS mockery. This was still when Punk was beloved and the honeymoon phase hadn't worn off yet, pre-Elite brawl. They derailed Hangman here, who was on a huge run after beating Omega and ending that long story arc whose roots created AEW! Not gonna say keeping the belt on Hanger would have meant more money than the Punk/MJF feud, but they could have done more, a second match at least, where Punk beats him then. This one and done sent Hangman way back, most viewers won't view him in the same way, especially given the top heavy upper card.
The reason for 14:00 mark against wardlow was because in storyline. Punk had to fight & win against the pinnacle Wardlow Spears FTR to get to punk. Also punks finish was a tribute to Bret harts match against diesel with small package win. Hope this helps.
I was always taught that for every action there is a reaction. If you do something negative, then something negative will happen to you. Punk didn’t start any of this bullshit. Page shot on punk first, went into business for himself and punk even asked “why are you taking this so seriously? Why are you making this personal?” On fuckin air. Then Bobby fish went into business for himself and kicked out of the GTS at three as the ref rang the bell like he was hulk hogan or something trying to make himself look strong, and then the dirt sheets went fuckin nuts blaming punk for shit he didn’t even do, while Tony khan is constantly saying “none of these things are true, please don’t read the dirt sheets” he begged fans to not read into Dave meltzers bull shit and they gobbled it up like pig feed. He gets injured and it’s all anyone talks about is “punk got cabana fired. Page said so” even as Tony says publicly that cabana was taken off air months before cm punk was signed and that “Cabana was signed to a ROH exclusive contract as soon as Tony bought ROH and to blame punk for that is unfair.” That’s an exact quote. Then we find out from moxleys own chicken lips on his wife’s podcast that Moxley wasn’t even signed to a contract when they made him interim champion, that he was on a pay by appearance schedule so when they told him to drop the belt back to punk he admits he said “I’m doing you guys the fuckin favor here, so you’re gonna do it how I want, I’m not obligated to be here I can take this belt and go to summerslam right now if I wanted.” His exact quote go watch the podcast. So moxley held the belt at ransom, forced punk and Tony to agree to punk getting squashed in 3 minutes by him which is fuckin stupid it kills any heat and momentum punk had. Just so punk can win the belt back at All in. And he got hurt at all in and he finally let all those frustrations out and I can’t blame him, dealing with Page, Bobby fish, Moxley all going into business for themselves and getting away with it. The bull shit from meltzer, getting reinjured. Who wouldn’t admit by that point “this company isn’t being run very well.”
@@CSC52698 it would be a shorter video, sure. But The Hawk also takes promos and mic work into account and those would help make the video a bit longer.

Watching Punk in ROH back in the day he always seemed uncoordinated compared to most of the roster, alot of his moves looked sloppy. He never really got better in the ring imo, its always been his promo skills that got him over.

AEW has a lot of long matches but with people who lack promo skill and star power that make the matches feel like they have stakes. So Punk here, watching the full shows & promos of this run was must watch.
I think what you're missing is that Punk was helping put over guys he felt needed a rub when he first got there and was killing time until MJF became available. Thats why he was wrestling no name guys and putting them over in matches. Also, Punk agents those matches and you'll notice this guys never looked better. He didnt really start cooking until he got to MJF and that was the best rivalry in wrestling in about a decade. A+ grade from me.
You're exactly right. I think its funny when wrestling youtubers don't pick up on stuff like "perhaps the veteran is trying to get someone over" or "perhaps the veteran is trying to tell a story in the ring rather than relying on flips and no sells". Some of Punk's matches were botchy but hell, its AEW, what match doesn't have a botch that either breaks someone's leg or concusses someone. i usually love CM Punk first run and matches, but then i saw this video without the hype magic from CM Punk first return to wrestling and i just agree with The Hawk with this one. all the best part is usually who CM Punk was facing and not himself.
Can't be said, enough - The Hawk listens to his people!
Look into the whole Bobby fish CM punk shenanigans going on right now
Can you do Jershow on roh they had 25 matches and were very entertaining .
10:15 - 10:20 LMAO him jumping while the music plays in the background 😂😂
Thank you for saying something many dont understand. It doesnt mean if the match is long it has to be good
I wouldn't worry about demonetization, I'd be more worried about Warner blocking the video.
Best watch it whilst you can then 😂
Aew have been aggressive with blocking. They took Stevie Richards vid down showing in detail fenix given out the concussions on moxley
@@jeffers1985yup I saw that. It’s no different to the the WWE though who have taken around 60 of my videos in my career. It’s part of the package if you want to do wresting UA-cam.
@@Markyd123 Try to add watermarks or some slight edits so the footage doesn't get ID'd.
@@user-fe8gx3ie5vI’m sure he’s never tried any of that since 19
When I got the notification I immediately clicked on it😉and yes I think cm punk is gonna return to WWE
Thanks Hawk 👍
The reason that Punk was always the opener is that Rampage aired right after Smackdown at 10pn. They wanted to get as many viewers to watch them right after Smackdown. It didn’t work 😂😂
This video put alot of people's safety in danger and made me fear for my life
Thanks for the video I enjoyed it a lot
Glad you finally did cm punk thanks hawk keep up the great videos 📹!!
Man hindsight is 20-20. Seeing that match between Punk and Page, and seeing how unnerved Punk is by Page's support looks pretty different now that we know about their issues.
CM Punk would be a long-term main event, mid-card, commentate, or manage wrestlers with the right storytelling employee to the Ring of the Hawk. But, he has to learn how to keep his ego in check sometimes.
When you put it like that he really does sounds like a modern day Macho Man Randy Savage
@@Playboigermexcept macho man wasn’t a cancer to every locker room he was in
@@Playboigerm Macho Man could actually wrestle and kept his ego in check.

@TheSleepyJoe What will Punk do? Bitch and yell like always, then tear a muscle.
CM Punk has the best matches backstage ever
Punk’s one of my favorite wrestlers of all time and oh my lord, his return hit me like a brick wall. I absolutely loved every moment of it, I think it was a brilliant and iconic run for him. The promos were certainly the best of his career as well.
How can the Pepsi puke be anyone’s favourite wrestler is beyond comprehension! His finisher puts the audience to sleep! His promos are just him crying in the mic with his legs crossed!
@@Sammythesquib-mo6ss Pretty sure any wrestler can't be anyone's favourite wrestler by ur frame of reference.
Ask MJF how CM Punk was his favourite or the millions of people around thw world who chanted CM Punk for over 7 years how he could be anyone's favourite.
When you realize that a multitude of people who gave up on watching WWE and only came back because CM Punk made Monday Night Raw interesting again and even MJF, Ricky Starks, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, The Miz and a slew of other wrestlers to this day use CM Punk's Promo style to do good mic work.
Before Punk, no one really sounded like that on the mic
If u don't like him that OK, plenty of people don't like him. But I'm pretty sure even you can understand why he's so many people's favourite wrestler. What you and many others hate, Sammythesquib-mo6ss and even many more other love because they enjoy a level of authenticity and articulation in their wrestling.
@@Sammythesquib-mo6ss I was just watching a Ricky Steamboat interview where he praised Punk as a brilliant wrestler. I'll take Steamboat's opinion over some random d-bag on the internet, thank you very much.

MARKY you could not put out a more controversial video in this moment but as a Chicagoan who has seen every punker match in Chicago i appreciate you calling it down the middle. Phil and Joe have a mutual respect for each other that wont be confounded by whatever drama.
I have been waiting for this🙏🏾😂
Punks AEW run could’ve been better if he had a competent booker.
Another quality episode.
Awwww lawd this is what we’ve alll beeen waitinnnnnnnnnn forrrrrrrrrrrr … ring the bell!! 🔔🔔🔔
Hey man so I’m warning you that AEW might take this video down cause they’ve been taking down a lot of peoples videos down.
I’m not expecting it to stay up but at least I can say I finally made this video.
They only seem to take down videos criticising them.
Yeah they took down Stevie Richards video because he expose these people
@@ryanrichardson76it’s it them or Warner cause Warner are known for taking videos out
Obviously I’ve dealt with copyright in wresting since 2018. I’m pretty much an expert on it. I will let you all know if AEW treat me different to WWE etc.
thank you youtube algorithm
I got following requests: Sting in WWE, Warrior in WCW, Flairs first WWE run and Hogan in NJPW. Thanks for the excellent content.
You mean flair in 91-93? He did that one already
Hogan in njpw would be sweet but I would get a strike. Other ideas are fine to do. I did Flairs WWF run already
This was one of your more fun videos, I can’t wait for part 2(please don’t punch me in the gut)
Little bit of roh before bedtime 😊
Glad to be here before this video gets flagged by Tony Khan’s minions
Tbh nobody was really in the right in the situation. At least to me.
It's so strange to see one of your videos where a Wild Slapnuts does not appear.
You are truly amazing my man. I hope one day to improve enought to be near your level!
I missed this entire run and pretty much all of Punk's stuff in the AEW. Watching this his age really shows.
Yeah, compare him to Christian. He hadn't missed a beat.
HIT BABA BOOEY WITH A BRICK HAWK HOGAN!!!!!
Well, now you gotta do his record WWE Championship reign. But maybe breaking it up by focusing on the face run and the heel run in separate videos.
With how CM Punk has behaved recently , can we confirm he really is Straight Edge lol
It actually confirms that he is as if he took a hit off a blunt for once, maybe he'd be more chill and less aggro to slights lmao
@@GrizzexploderHe needs to smoke a whole forest
The reason for 14:00 mark against wardlow was because in storyline. Punk had to fight & win against the pinnacle Wardlow Spears FTR to get to punk. Also punks finish was a tribute to Bret harts match against diesel with small package win. Hope this helps.
Match 9 was also a dark match at greensboro north carolina ,so you forgot one but all good keep up the awesome videos.
Future Ring of the Hawk suggestion: Hollywood Rock (his most recent heel run).
How many matches was that all together? 5 or 6 including a battle royal?
@@CSC52698 it would be a shorter video, sure. But The Hawk also takes promos and mic work into account and those would help make the video a bit longer.

“A bit of embarrassment for them”
Brother, AEW is one big, long winded embarrassment.
Hell yes dude, i was wondering if Phil was gonna be featured in ROH but his full run was 31 or 32 matches (i think?) so i thought maybe not. Really excited for this.
Let’s goooo 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's really sad that Punk isn't who we though he was.
He is better
Punk is not a top in ring performer yet HE IS a top pro wrestler.
He’s average in the ring.
His mic work is top 3 of all time at least.
His undestanding of wrestling psychology is exceptional.
And he’s a grump.
Mount rushmore 4 me
Fair review.
The Hawk has watched enough wrestling to see right through it
i can't wait for you to do edge's last wwe run :) your videos are so aweosme and funny
I literally shouted yes when I saw this upload
This video made TK fear for his life
Was watching a Matt Cardona video and he has your "a wild slapnuts appears" on it, thought I cannot escape that guy (Jeff not Marky)
Watching Punk in ROH back in the day he always seemed uncoordinated compared to most of the roster, alot of his moves looked sloppy. He never really got better in the ring imo, its always been his promo skills that got him over.
23 matches in 1 year. That's a lot of cash per match. AJ Lee better have got a good Christmas gift from this

MJF is the best worker and no one can prove me otherwise, everything he is involved in, is gold.
i don't know if this has been done before in wrestling but after seeing match 12 and 13, i really want to see a doomsday device turned into a reverse hurricarana
AEW has a lot of long matches but with people who lack promo skill and star power that make the matches feel like they have stakes. So Punk here, watching the full shows & promos of this run was must watch.
Great vid as always but I think Ring of the Hawk Season 4 should have............THE Rated R Superstar.
You’re not wrong about the mjf feud
@@Markyd123 honorable mention for the Darby match too. Darby never looked better. That match was timeless and any generation would've loved it.
He was also wrestling people that weren't used to actually wrestling matches that weren't spot fests. I loved the stuff he tried to do with Team Tazz and the MJF/Kingston stuff was fantastic. Its just a shame AEW is run by a clown college.
