I'm surprised nobody is building a high altitude drone to investigate these balloons.
Sending fighter aircraft to investigate something that's hardly moving is not very efficient
They are, they're just not officially telling us about that. There's also likely several ground sensors and sattelites overhead monitoring it's movements as well. You'd be surprised at the recon capabilities of the US, if not outright floored if you knew some of the stuff we have.
And no less than two! 💸🚾
So they’re just going to let it fly?? Unbelievable!
Why not? They let the last one fly completely across the country before shooting it down.
In what way is a balloon a threat, in a world where we have satellites, imagery of every square inch of the planet online, missiles that can be fired across continents, how is a balloon a threat.
When people can just come into America by walking across with no restrictions. What’s stopping other countries from sending people here.
because you can often learn more about it by letting it fly for a bit before shooting it down
Ever think that maybe it might contain some chemicals that could harm people down below if shot down? Why shoot it down and risk anything like that? They will probably wait until it crosses an area where it wouldn't fall on Citizens of the US before shooting it down like they did with the last one.

Yes, they know we are. They look in the mirror every morning and realize the magnitude of our ignorance.
Yes, yes they do. we've allowed it to go too far for far too long
I'll tell you how; a payload of that size can only have extremely little power on board. Tith the small size of the balloon you can estimate it's max weight, and at best it houses a very tiny battery capable of very limited use. You can estimate how long the device has been in flight with wind maps and the battery is likely exhausted. Not only that, they can estimate what kind of data can be collected by getting a closer look and capturing intel/photographs. This is likely a hobbyist's balloon and if they took it out of the sky the right wingers would be barking "They risked the public's safety below, millions in tax payer funds for a hobbyists weather tracking balloon?! Why didn't they just do some basic recon on the balloon first. Incompetent!"

Over Utah? Over 600 miles from the Pacific Ocean before detecting it. Back in the 80s we detected and acted on things before they ever got over land. So it's not inability of equipment, it's inaction by officials.

it's at 40,000 feet and poses no threat to air travel? Is it guaranteed to not drop below 40,000 into the altitude window of commercial traffic? Well we at least know it wasn't a US citizen that launched the balloon because if it was you know darn well that it would be deemed a threat to national security, a threat to all flights in the US, the payload contents known in detail, and the person would already be in jail.
Yup. Good thing China is on our side
I missed hearing what is the payload since it has been assessed to pose no threat by military officials?
Trust your government. Without question.
The only way they could determine that, is if they destroyed the payload or captured it.
