    Performance anxiety is similar to social anxiety as in life everything is a performance , going to the shop , talking to people, playing sports , you are always performing and you feel like you’re been judged .. The only time I have less anxiety is when I meet people I feel that are not threatening to me !

    Sometimes stage freight symptoms have nothing to do with fear of people making fun of you. I know because I don’t fear that. I get anxious and to exited which causes my fingers to shake. It’s can be overwhelming for me to perform in front of a Crowd even when I’m confident in my playing. Beta blockers helped me but since my heart rate was recently low the doctor had me try Alprazolam. Will see what happens.

      Vince, Practical steps are needed to handle stage fear. Top priority is to do public speaking courses to boost your confidence and remove fear from the subconscious mind. Results are seen in one month. There may be a little discomfort in the beginning but confidence keeps building up with every speech. Give good eye contact with people in real life situations. Confidence is a top priority to succeed in every area of life. Joining a meditation class also calms the mind and removes nervousness.
      Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress and overthinking. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils and within the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. You can sit straight on a chair or lay down anywhere, eyes closed but avoid deep breathing. If distracted bring focus back on the breath. Never meditate with expectations but with self-awareness. Make it a lifetime habit to observe your breath before sleep, when travelling, when reading, at the workplace etc, Best wishes--Counsellor.

    Hello doctor.. I tried the beta blockers propranolol and it was a very effective treatment, but I suffer from asthma and the discharge of phlegm from the lungs, which negatively affected lung health.. Are there natural supplements that are an alternative to the beta blockers propranolol that do not affect the phlegm and lungs?

      There are no antidepressants that are effective for performance anxiety. For other anxiety disorders, the body can develop a tolerance to antidepressants. I like Zoloft out of all of the SSRIs.

    i need help i am from turkey and i have to talk in front of workers every year i have used paxera for 3. Years but it didnt work i also used dideral beta blocker it helping me but it dont help me stop of thinking of it i always think ppl is judging me i cant stand of it anymore i have to quit my job because i cant do it i cant find a new job because i dont have self esteem too

    What if you take propanalol and the do cardio exercise 2 hours later? Would your heartbeat not get faster ?

      It could be that you need higher doses for effectiveness. But the treatment for performance anxiety is exposure therapy and relaxation. Please visit with a therapist that is skilled at treating this, as medications for performance anxiety are not that effective over the long term.

      Sandra you can also join a Toastmasters club in your area. It's basically a speech club where members practice giving different kinds of speeches. This practice will help desensitize you to performance anxiety. Propranolol is a godsend and eventually you might be able to lower the dosage until you don't need it. Kava kava (I recommend Gaia brand capsules - take two at once) herb is a great natural aid if you're not using propranolol.

    Hello doc! I suffer from sexual performance anxiety. I ve been diagnosed with mild ocd, anxiety disorder. I get into fight or flight mode whenever i am in such situation. I ve tried taking cialis but it didnt help that much. Now i am on zoloft about a month which my doctor prescribed. I ve had this problem for many years. I feel optimistic that it might help but i havent found anything relevant on internet about someone taking ssri for a problem like mine. Is it possible that it will help?

      It depends...if you have been taking it for a while, then you may need to see your doctor, as stopping blood pressure medications abruptly can lead to rebound hypertension.

      Generally, 20 to 40 mg before a performance is the standard dosage.

      +tubo1812 As carvedilol (Coreg) is a beta blocker, then it can be used for performance anxiety. However, carvedilol is not commonly prescribed for anxiety.
