Optolong L-eNhance Dual-Band Filter Review

- The Optolong L-eNhance dual-band filter is an incredible feat in optical engineering. This filter transmits the hydrogen alpha emission line at a 10nm width and also has a 24nm band that includes both the 486nm hydrogen beta emission line and the 500nm Oxygen-III line. Being able to capture hydrogen alpha and Oxygen-III in the same exposures really helps bring the detail out of deep-sky objects and leave the light pollution out! This filter also transmits over 90% of the H-Alpha, H-Beta, and O-III emission lines, which is excellent for one shot color cameras (OSCs). All in all this filter does its job very well and is popular for good reason!

Great review and image, Cody!
The Urban Astronomer Thank you much!
Nice review. I especially liked the graph and your pictures.
docO Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Cody, great review
David McAbee Thanks David.
I use both 2" and the DSLR clip in, shooting in bortle 6, i've gotten great results. Solid review
Yep, I used to use clip-ins as well. They work great. Thanks.
Great review, thanks for sharing.
Hi Luke, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You are charming and provide useful information in a way that is easy to understand. I appreciate you and your videos--thank you for providing these high-quality and interesting video.
iampracticingpiano You’re kind! Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoy the content!
@@AstroBlender You are most welcome! I always learn something new and my enthusiasm for astronomy gets a boost, so thank you!
Great review and nice Saturn V rocket model... I'm trying to decide on this one or the extreme..
Well done!
Ray's Astrophotography Thanks Ray!
I love L Enhance for nebula! I have the L pro coming in the mail today along with the clouds. Have a good one all, Clear Skies
Enjoy! I haven’t been able to image in forever because of wildfire air. I’m dying to get outside!
Appreciated the advice about stars and more broadband galaxies rather than the output of individual nebulae. It'd be great to hear some advice on how to post-process images taking with narrow band filters and how the approach differ from processing broadband or non-filtered subs.
Great Review !!. Question, do you separate the colors and process them individually?, do you apply something like the Hubble pallet to it?
Great video just received mine but like with any new piece of equipment have not been able to image due to weather. I love the model of the Saturn 5 can I ask where you got it.
Hi Slymon! Love your videos. I’m learning like crazy on your page. Just got a 8se. My first upgrade(besides the focal reducer) is going to be the 2” eyepiece set. Seeing as I just spent almost 2k, I was wondering if you can give me a good choice for what you would recommend as “essential” filters. Preferably your top 2. Thanks in advance! Also I see you are near the mountains. I’m in CO. Are you in Utah?
Cody nice review and stunning pics! waiting for the L-eXtreme review!
Question are you using the L-eNhance with your RASA?
I am, but my last couple images had some issues (my fault, not the L-eNhance) guiding, so they weren’t so great. :(
Nice video.I use this filter as well.I have question,do you separate the colors and process them individually?Do you apply something like the Hubble pallet to it?Someone already asked this, but I can't see any reply on it.
Can i use this filter for visual observing ?
Hey Cody, another great video, very informative like always... question, my humble setup is a Nikon z6 with a redcat and I have the starizona slider with the optolon l-enhance 2” apparently my ftz adapter was getting on the way for a proper back focus with the slider... so I installed the optolong directly into the redcat, the question is: when I’m focusing do I do it with the filter on or without it and once I’m focused install it back? Hopefully it make sense... sorry English is not my first language 😬 thank you for your help in advance
It depends on how much light the filter blocks out. If you choose a bright star, in live view you should be able to see something. I know the redcat has a built in bahtinov mask so it should be pretty easy.
Thank you!
Thnx great review, what size of filter should i buy for imaging 1.25" or 2"? I am planing start with zwo1600mm mono camera but i couldnt get any decision for filters.
Oguz Korkmaz I’d say it depends on the telescope you’d be using it with. Just curious if you have a mono camera, why buy an L-eNhance? Are you wanting to shoot in black and white? You may want instead to go with an 8-position filter wheel with LRGB filters and Ha, S-II and O-III.
Hi Cody I’ve just recently ordered a qhy183c and I want to buy an ac adapter for the cooling system. Which one do you recommend? I wasn’t able to find any information in astrophotography forums.
You may have to change the connector.
Sensei AJ Does it still use the 9 pin connector or is it a 5.5x 2.1mm input?
AstroBlender 5.5 x 2.1
Sensei AJ In that case I’d buy the ZWO 12V, 5A power supply or similar. You’ll need at least 3.5A so I’d get the 12V 5A to be safe.
AstroBlender is the zwo adapter compatible with qhy183c?
This can really change the image!
Can this filter be used using unmodified Canon DSLR on Redcat 51from Bortle scale class 6-7?
Shubhkarman Singh Unmodded cameras have a filter that clips out a lot of the red, so I’d only use it on modded cameras. You can still pick up some ha data, but you’d have to expose for much longer.
@@AstroBlender thank you for your reply. In that case, can I go for a CLS filter? What filter can you suggest for my beginner setup - star adventurer, red cat 51, unmod DSLR canon eos t7, bortle scale 6-7.
Shubhkarman Singh A CLS filter would be a good option. It’s a broadband light pollution filter so it will allow you to get rid of the undesirable light you don’t want.
@@AstroBlender thank you so much for your suggestion. Clear skies.
Nice video, I am making also a review of the Optolong L Enhance, i have read that it was renamed as a Triband filter instead of dual band. I would have mentioned it also that does not make big halos like other filters. i compared this filter with Altair triband on Elephant's Trunk Nebula and it did perform much better regarding halos.
Thanks, yeah it’s a nice filter. They can call it whatever they want in marketing lingo, but it’s definitely dual band. One band is 24nm at FWHM, the other is 10nm at FWHM, making it dual band. The wide band just happens to include the HB and O-III emission lines.
A more appropriate name would be a tri-emission line, dual-band filter but that is way too wordy! :)
@@AstroBlender I think is the same with the Altair triband filter, 2 bands one at 12 and one at 35, but they call it triband :)
It’s a Tri band not a dual
