I live in Merritt and enjoy fishing Nicola lake usually downriggers by the end of July. Never seen a bull trout in the lake until your video , which I enjoyed.
Dave Martin Yeah I've heard of a few bull trout caught from friends who reside in Merritt in the past but was not expecting it to be so close to shore.
Heading to British Columbia this week. Looks like adventure begins by simply slowing down and exploring the lake right beside you. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to sampling many of the lakes and territory you've covered. Nicely done Rod.
+ml k Have a great time here! You're welcome to ask if there are any lakes you are thinking about trying out. Best way to reach me is on our Facebook page's messages.
I've always wanted to try the lake but end up driving by to fish the smaller lakes in the area. So this was a really interesting video for me since I've never seen anyone get anything out of there.
J'zargo That's right. :) It's the way to so many good smaller lakes nearby so we usually just rush through there. ;) When I stopped by that day, an older gentleman was just leaving with a couple of small, skinny rainbow trout so that was my expectation when I started fishing. The bull trout was definitely a nice surprise.
Hey Rod for lure fishing you should really try a Blue Fox Vibrax spinner, they cast a mile and are the best lure for bigger trout. They are the only lure I use when fishing bigger lakes/rivers.
Al thanks. I do switch to inline spinners from time to time as well, usually I make my own with size 3 or 4 French blades. Personally the spinners work great for salmon and anadromous trout and char for me, whereas spoons seem to the go to lures for trout in lakes. I also find spoons tend to cast further compared to spinners in the same weight class. This may due to the fact that the blade of the spinner tends to spin in the air when being thrown out.
Great video Rod. Nice bully to. ya what's a pike minnow. Here in Alberta pike are classified hammer handles axe handles and picture worthy. 3 more sleeps till opening day.
Thanks. Northern pikeminnow is a species in the minnow family, closely related to chub, sucker and shiner. They are predatory unlike other minnow species, primarily prey on small fish. They were originally called northern squawfish, but changed to northern pikeminnow around two decades ago. Good luck with the pike fishing.
Only the pike a pound or less are called hammer handles lol. But if you call em hammer handles then your fishing the wrong spots. Wab has some lunkers.
YVRSURF When they start returning. ;) Pre-season estimate gives you an idea how large the run is but generally it's based on a range of probabilities so margin of error is large. Once fish begin to return, the estimate is then fine tuned. You should be looking at anywhere between 10 and 20 million fish.
jr1999ism1 If the run you are fishing is deeper with stronger current, then these spoons I use in the video might not work well. Gibbs Croc spoons are longer and slightly slender, so they are great for casting and retrieving, but they don't sink fast enough to reach the depth you want to fish if the current is strong. They do make other styles of lures, like Gibbs Koho or Ironhead. The smallest size of those two models may work well. If that doesn't work, you can also try float fishing with one of the small trolling spoons like a Gibbs Gypsy. Actually, we may need to do a video on this to show people how it works... :)
Yea That Would Be Great. It's cause I'm only 16 and Lures like spoons are quite expensive and I Don't really like borrowing lures from people so I Use What I Have and it doesn't seem to work. And When I Snag a lure it really gets to me all day lol. Thank You Rod. Keep It Up.=)👍🏽🐟
If BC was smart it would grant those people below a certain income bracket a fishing license and salmon one for free so they could eat. It would cut down on poor people sneaking around the rules and provide an open door to a hobby that may inspire them to do better. As a prospector I have eaten fish all over BC and Canada but never spawning fish since that is not really a challenge to me though eating a dead salmon is possible if fresh. Learned a lot about fishing in VT at Orvis camp as a kid, brown trout heaven. You have a great knowledge of local fish thanks for sharing.
hi rod i was just curious but I was thinking of fishing at Garry Point and I currently have a freshwater fishing license. do I need to get my Tidal or can my BC Freshwater license be good enough?
Andrew Nguyen Garry Point Park is located in the tidal portion of the Fraser River, which is defined as the section downstream from the Mission railway bridge. For the tidal portion of the Fraser River, you need a tidal fishing licence so your freshwater licence is not valid for that area. Make sure you get a salmon stamp to go with the tidal licence because in early September you'll have two or three weeks of good pink salmon fishing in that area.
***** thanks Rod, it just confirms what I thought. A friend of mine "claimed" it was possible to use freshwater license in a Tidal and I was checking to prove him wrong so I appreciate the confirmation on that. I didn't know you can fish for Pinks at Garry Point.. so its possible just from the shore there?
Andrew Nguyen Yep, you can catch pink salmon from shore anywhere from Garry Point Park to along River Road between No.5 Road and Gilbert Road in Richmond once they start returning in early September. Time your outing with the tide, you want to be there when the tide is rising until it peaks. There is a article called "Tidal Fraser Pink Salmon Fishing" on our website which provides a detailed overview on this.
Rod do you have a link to beginner videos ? I just started going for trout in a stream and Bass in a lake. I have a light tackle ugly stick with 4 or 6 pound test. The trout I can handle but I don't know what to do for bass or lake fishing. Time of day ? Is mid day ok to fish ? Power bait worm with weights ? How much weight ? floats ? My rubber worm was floating to surface ? Spinners? Frog Poppers ? What type of weights ? Any links to any good beginner videos would ne appreciated.
Richm444 There is a series of video tutorial geared toward beginners in this UA-cam channel and they all start with the phrase "How to Fish". Some of the other video features also include some instructional content. For bass fishing, the answers to your questions are too broad and would take a really long time to type it all out here because it highly depends on the region where you are fishing and the species you are targeting (smallmouth or largemouth). In general, fish distribution has a direct relation to water temperature and cloud cover. Early morning and late in the afternoon when lighting is low and temperature is low, fish tend to be more active in shallower water. In the middle of the day, fish tend to be in deeper water where it is cooler and darker. Find fish and you'll catch fish, as long as the right gear and techniques are being used. Good luck!
Thanks Rod - I really don't know what I am doing so I am looking forward to your videos. I saw a few of your videos several months ago and I was very impressed so when I started fishing I knew what channel to go visit - thank you

You can also Google "northern pikeminnow" which should generate enough readings on the species.
GuessingSucceeds I am currently only using a Minn Kota 55lb thrust Traxxis. In the near future I'm hoping to add a 9.9HP to the G3 1442 which I am riding right now so I can cover bigger lakes more efficiently.
GuessingSucceeds I've never really run out on one battery so difficult to say as the way I use mine might be different to how others use theirs. I tend to travel from point A to point B so I can anchor and fish. A day of fishing may involve 30 minutes to 1 hour of travelling at full speed and the battery doesn't get drained, and I usually recharge it at the end of the day. If trolling at the slowest speed, I'm sure it can last for the entire day/6+ hours too.
***** For sure! I'd rather catch a bull trout over the other two anyways, I've caught so many species out of the Rivers around here i can almost always tell if i have a walleye, pike, or bass on by the way they fight before i even see them.

Ross McArthur You're welcome! Glad to hear they have been helpful. :)
Thanks for the video, rod! I was just out there too at Monck Park! I caught two fish that were a rainbow trout and a pike minnow.

@@FishingwithRod I caught a nice pike minnow, not sure of the weight but about 3-4 pounder
Awesome! 🙂
Wow this is great love video
Ronnie Mewbourn Thanks!
Fishing is thrilling in my life.
Swagata Chowdhury Great.

Are you allowed to retain bulls in Nicola? I don't see anything in the regs so u must just follow regs for the zone?
Gord Fountain bull trout are a protected species everywhere as far as I know. Tight lines
What do you think of the islander lx series fly reels?
Islander LX series reels are excellent reels. I enjoy my LX3.2 as a 4wt for trout and other similar species.

You caught a northern pike minnow and a trout off camera and a bull trout on camera
youre the best
+johnny kills Thanks!
I remember a long childhood spending stupid amounts of hours on that lake with a close to zero catch rate...
It’s a massive lake and gets windy, but definitely fair amount of life close to shore!
pike minnow to rainbow trout to bull trout lol
Yeah, I was rather indecisive until it reached the bank, all part of the excitement when fishing in a multi-species fishery.

Lol
Hi Rod, could you check out my trout fishing video. It is my first video and I'm still learning, it would mean a lot!
