It fits with his dark humor
It's a surprisingly brilliant combination of "try not to laugh" and Roast.
TNTL they rarely have much prep time, so they have to adlib everything with no backup plan if it doesn't work, and then throw together another for the next person. They have time to perfect one bit for these and give it their best.
Roast is intended to be very pointed at the roastee so every joke is required to have a target, which doesn't really allow much room for characters. For these, Ian can literally ignore the roastee and just promote Smosh merch and still have it be successful.
This combination gives us the very best of both worlds.
Well, it makes sense that in the show about dead people, his dead capability of being funny revives... Oh, wait, this isn't his roast-

I have really enjoyed all of the “______ is Dead” series but this has to be one of my favorites literally no awkward moments just straight banger after banger and the addition of the extra guests was icing on the cake!!
Tommy's roasts are always fire, so I'm glad the cast went in as hard as they did. One of Ian's best bits by far.

Kevin's segment contains what might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to Ian on this channel. Usually the cast and crew shit on him left and right, whether he is there or not.
These are usually insightful, and roast-y but not overly savage/hardcore till Tommy comes on stage. Ironically, tommys funeral was savage from beginning to end. Ian and Spencer really stole the show. The best parts tho are definitely tommys face when his best friend and his man both came out from the curtain. A plus

Great video guys. Ian was pulling out his creativity for this entire series and it's been great. While Amanda really commits to a character and I mean REALLY. The fact she was able to hit Tommy right where he lives was just a bonus. Spencer was his usual snarky self.
