    Great saw! Try backing your truck up to the off side of the sawmill so you can slide the planks in without leaving your finished cut position...saves a lot of steps and time. Just rotate the plank on the cant and slide it into the bed of the truck.

      It looks to be an 8 HP Briggs and Stratton. Although it works ok, a more powerful motor would be better. At least 11-13 HP for this size bandsaw mill. Maximum would probably be 16 HP.

    I have a custom ,home built saw mill, based on Timberharfester, but don't have a winch to turn heavy logs. What is the winch you use to load/turn your logs? I've been looking but not sure what size winch would handle 2' to 3' logs up to 20 + feet. Good video, both this and your setter!

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  8 років тому

      +Wallace Everett I use a 5k pound winch to load and flip logs. go to my channel and look for my sawmill features video I cover the winch. Soon I want to get a new video up because I have the winch mounted to the wall of my mill building now, it works well to load and flip. it is mounted higher up and I can move it along a track so it lines up to the center of the log length so it work a little better. the original is fixed to 1 point, no way to move it along the log. I load logs up to 30 inch dia and 16 feet long.

    that is an 8hp on it. Right now I'm am changing it to a 15hp 2 cylinder. The 8 worked good but it was a little lacking. the toe in and toe out is done with 2 1/2-20 screws on each of the saw wheel bearings. There is enough play in the bearing mounting holes to make tracking adjustments to the saw wheels. Both wheels were machined from solid aluminum stock and they have a crown on the face for the blade to ride on. they also have urethane tires on them.

      will you have to make any other changes to the mill itself to accommodate the bigger engine--i called on that little saw mill for 2199 from hudson and tried to pay alittle more for them to put a 12 horse on it instead of a 7--and the "lady" said it would be too dangerous to do--they wouldnt do it.And advised me not to either

    That's a nice job, was wondering what you are doing for FPS. After researching, I find that the blade speed should be 3000 FPS, which is about 35 MPH. Most of these DIY sawmills are doing 60 MPH+ and that causes too much drag on the engine. The one I'm working on has a double pulley system so I can get 3000 FPS and I'm going to use a 8 Hp Robin engine. You have a nice track system, I don't think I can afford buying that much steel. I already have $300 and haven't started the track.

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  10 років тому +1

      My 20inch wheels run at 945 rpm. that's 4974 surface feet per min, I had an 8 hp engine on it when I first started running it, I have since changed it to a 2 cylinder 15 hp. That seems ok but more HP would be even better. I have been cutting oak and walnut lately and some of the cuts are over 20 inch across. that's where a little more HP would come in handy.

      Your blade height crank looks like over kill on the leverage which actually slows down adjustments, or do you need the leverage to raise it? What do you think of setting up a PTO to raise the saw?

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  8 років тому +1

      +Pierre-Alexandre Giasson Yes it is to cool the blade some but more to keep pitch from building up on the blade. Its more of a lube than a coolant. I use kerosene and bar and chain oil mix. 1 part chain oil 2 parts kerosene.

  • @Tricknologyinc
    @Tricknologyinc 9 років тому

    LOL! Is that a DRO on top! Do you have it set up yet? It looks like you're using screws to raise and lower the saw. Are you planning to automate the feed and make the height programmable? For feed, you use a changeable weight to provide a fixed force, and drive the return of the saw by motor (PTO) since the blade is unobstructed. You could even add a mechanical sequence to raise the blade slightly before the return, and use a set of pedals to start each operation. Pic is bit blurry, but it looks like pretty nice fab work and design. But if you're playing with DRO's, you're probably pretty used to precision work. Thanks for posting!

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  9 років тому +1

      Tricknologyinc you are correct. that is a DRO and the Encoder is on the op shaft (small grey box). I have thoughts about automating the machine at some point. If I do I will go with stepper motors and run G-code like a CNC machine. That way I can have different programs for different board thicknesses ect. Program feed rates and home up with a rapid return. I have it in my head and some of the hardware on hand just got to find the time. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comments!

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  9 років тому

      Tricknologyinc look at my other video on the sawmill features it would give you a better all around look at machine. the DRO box is off but the encoder is still in place.ua-cam.com/video/mFGq92f7-sk/v-deo.html

    • @Tricknologyinc
      @Tricknologyinc 9 років тому +1

      I wouldn't use a feed rate driven by motor. I would use a return that raises a weight that you can set a force by adding/subtracting weight. That sets your work load and allows for variances in the materials. You can divide the height of the weight track by multiplying the weight and adding pulleys. It's up to you, but for wood, I'd rather set the force than the rate. As your blade dulls, and wood increases in density, you're just begging for breakage. When you push manually, you are mimicking a weight driven force because you can feel what's going on in the wood. For a small band saw, like these I would almost rather stick to manual feed and just have a pedal for return and for emergency stop. For a saw this size, you can automate steps like incrementing height for the next pass, but each pass should be triggered by a safety two hand pair of triggers, so there's no chance of the machine advancing when you collapse and your wife is trying to drag you out of the way.... You want to be extremely cautious with automating machines like these. In a lot of ways, all this access to technology has people exposed to to things we only have 19th century practice in applying all the grim realities. We're way too spoiled in this automated age, and people are going to be trying things that someone with brains or experience wouldn't try at gun point. Well, that's my safety lecture, and thanks again.

    • @whistle3man
      @whistle3man  9 років тому

      Tricknologyinc
      All good points and you are right on about the blade and force involved. you certainly change the rate constantly when hand feeding. Power up and down at least will be the next big improvement. thanks

    • @Tricknologyinc
      @Tricknologyinc 9 років тому +1

      Any time! It's so easy to lose sight of the most important reality when we focus on something because it's really cool! LOL happens to NASA all the time! They blew up a couple space shuttles when they really knew better, but just couldn't seem to keep their eye on the right ball at the right time. Thanks again for sharing your work, and be safe.
