- When Russian invaded Ukraine, the BBC and its partners began painstakingly verifying and counting as many deaths as possible.
We identified more than 25,000 named individuals - people we know to have died - setting a bare minimum for Russia's total losses.
The count provides hard evidence of the war's impact on Russian forces. But it has also given answers to grieving families. Some relatives did not even know what had happened to their loved ones until the BBC traced them.

Ukraine is, so it doesn't seem like they would just decide to cut their losses, leave Ukraine and let it integrate into NATO. Russia's economy is projected to grow more than the UK's by IMF projections and Russia doesn't same issues of the Soviet Union with multiple nations tied to an ideology that could tear it apart if support for that multi ethnic ideological project dropped. Support for Iraq and Afghanistan became very unpopular in the US. We weren't going to overthrow our government and suffer just because we didn't like the wars. The US government wrapped the wars up on their timeline. Citizens have a vested interest in their country not collapsing.
Full military support and crushing sanctions like the ones the US put on Japan in world war 2 has its own risks (Japan attacked Pearl |Harbor because American sanctions would have destroyed their country in a year and they couldn't convince us to stop.) But this idea that we can half help Ukraine and hope Russia just gives up is pure fantasy. It's either outright swift defeat of Russia, or negotiate with them. This third way we are doing is very dangerous.

Exactly. How can be a journalist so superficial? Everybody knows that Ukraine has offered Russia to retake **trains** full of bodies of Russian killed in action, and Russia refused to take them back. In order not to have to admit the actual numbers and pay the promised compensation to the families of those soldiers.
The deaths on Russian side are likely more than 100 thousands, plus another 200 thousand of wounded.
So many that remain scattered on the fields, rotting, and the ones the Russian army must have cremated.

These are only the graves of soldiers whose bodies were (1) retrieved (2) transported home, and (3) whose deaths or burials were publicly announced - i.e. by family in local papers.

@@nifralo2752 There was a very interesting intercept of a phone call where a relative told a soldier about his dead comrade: the dead one’s family had still never been notified of his death, even though his comrades knew his remains had been collected. So the sister actually drove a couple of thousand miles and bribed her way into a morgue - and found it was literally a large warehouse, with bodybags and uncovered frozen corpses piled in high mounds. She literally searched among them until she found her brother.
The practice at the time was - if any remains were recovered - to take the zinc coffins back to their home towns one truck at a time, stretched over the weeks and months so that the local population don’t realise their town has lost men by the hundred.

The number of confirmed losses will rise during reconstruction when the bodies of abandoned Russian soldiers are found. There are a few groups trying to recover bodies regardless of nationality but its a dangerous task during the active conflict.

Even all the pictures and events on the ground show how bad mozcovians are fighting and how badly they are prepared, and how often they use the cannon fodder tactics - and on the opposite how well Ukrainians are fighting. According to BBC it was 16 000 Russian KIA by March 2023. I suppose BBC considered that number to be embarrassingly low in comparison with catastrophic Ukrainian losses (which are at least ten times as much) and increased it to 25 000 KIA.

For people wondering - the 200,000 number includes killed and injured (injured inferring that they are no longer combat capable). Wagner lost many, many men but because it was a PMC, their KIA would not be considered in the total of killed Russian soldiers.
Nope. The 200,000 is "dead" but it is "soldiers fighting for Russia" rather than Russian military personnel (like the ":volunteers fighting for the "Donbas republics), Chechens, Syrians, Wagner, and other mercenaries of conscripts form outside the Russian Federation.

These are only confirmed fatalities. Prigozhen states that over 20,000 Wagner were killed in Bakhmut alone and you must also take into consideration that there was thousands of regular Russian troops, airborne forces and separatists killed in Bakhmut also. People erroneously think that it was only Wagner troops in Bakmut. That Wagner soldier who escaped to Norway at the beginning of the year states that there is numerous mass graves in Luhansk containing Wagner soldiers and one was found in late January early February containing 49 Wagners. In just the first two weeks of the invasion over 3,000 Russian soldiers were killed and the Ukranian government got in touch with their Russian counterparts to have them repatriated to Russia but the latter claimed this was nonsense as only 30 Russuan soldiers were KIA!. We will never know the whole truth or the true figure of Russian KIA. No doubt Ukraine inflate the figure but there is no denying they are on an industrial scale. Russia has such low respect for human life and consider Russian lives especially the prisoner/ convict element expendable. I know in Russia a lot of families have come together as they have not heard from loved ones serving in Ukraine. Obviously they are dead because if they were POW's they would have heard something from them.These families are now forming organisations and the Kremlin have taken a heavy handed stance against them. God only knows how many Russian soldiers,Wagners and separatists have been killed. Russian Naval personnel took huge casualties near Vuledar since last September as they were used as rudimentary infantrymen. A Russian based journalist in Moscow who stated he had official military access put Russian losses last October at over 90,000. However he did not clarify if this was exclusively Russian regulars or all forces from the Russian Federation. Remember in Russia it is a criminal offence to print,publish or post casualty figures. Simple as this we will never know but Russian losses are on a leviathan level.

Losing a million fighting age men in an invasion is a big deal to future population size, and thus economic health. Russia only had about 16 million males between the age of 20 and 40. If a million of them have been lost forever (as casualties, or draft-dodging), that takes a huge chunk out of the birth rate for one, two, three, who knows how many years? It means Russia is shrinking.
