In this video,he talks about using old cylinders for a house, in the Army we called them Quansit Huts,or half cylinders, all you have to do, is cut both ends off, which can be used for the door, then in the center, drill a hole,to create a chimney, complete with a fireplace, and create the inside wall with insulation, and furnish accordingly to your living style, we used them primarily under Field conditions, as the metal won't corrode,in the Army you have to use with what you have, very good use of things already that have been made, so this video doesn't surprise me, when the operation is over, lock it up, and go back to garrison. These heavy drums can be used in multiple applications, as they support Field operations. Not bad video.
Not to mention I am pretty sure trying to properly clean an old oil storage container isn’t cheap, easy, or reliable in an off grid environment, but to each his own
These units are easily steamed out if all openings are sealed off , used to do this for tankers used in the oil patch in Canada . Takes an hour . That said ,this video more or less is just a crummy video that doesn,t really say much ,a poor attempt .
Makes little sense to have those cylinders so far off the ground. Soil is a great insulator. Not only for banking around the sides in winter. But over the top in the summer. I used to live in ammunition bunkers with a few feet of soil over the top. Amazing. It would stay a constant 55-60 degrees year around. Caves moderate temperatures year around. If you have permafrost, fire will melt the frozen soil. Even snow is a good insulator.
We called cisterns, water reservoirs, usually built of cement, underneath a house, that contained a large supply of water for emergencys. We never thought of them as being made of metal?
If you are too cheap to hire a narrator, could you at least listen through the commentary before posting it. It sounds like he is having a stroke every time he tries to mention the temperature.
What a great way to help the environment to using those old cyst, turns is a great idea. It may not be for everybody, but it sure was very well thought out thanks for your video. It’s nice to see something being done to help the environment by using things we would normally throw out. Look forward to your next one.
The old quansont hut concept...not new or unique. Round structures do with stand wind better than a square/ rectangle one. They do tend to be easier to heat due to no " dead" corners & circulation of heat molecules. They can withstand noise due to no sharp angles . There are many reasons why a round structure is good for Arctic living.
The 2 ingenious Soviet engineers that came up with and thought of Winter use for the containers should've been used to safely design nuclear submarines.
Oh come on!! I'm a woman, I'd live in one. I've been in these round structures. We are not just talking old used oil barrels!! Most are built with square walls inside just like another building. Built properly, with modern furnishings & design, they can be a very nice place to call home.
This was a throne together video from other ones that someone found and added their own audio. In the United States a cistern could be made of concrete or even metal and generally is used for liquids like water. This is not a concept that’s been discovered in the last few years, I knew about this 60 years ago.
Quonset huts.. most of the photos are Quonset huts. I am not saying this is nonsense. But the Huts are easier to build and move. The cylinders, if they are on site, they make sense. But hauling them out is insane..
It might work for the moon and Mars….take a honeycomb of connected starships to Mars with extra tank-like treaded cisterns to bury under the lunar and Martian regolith
I would live in one if I could launch it into space then go to other planets and look for whales on that planet. I would be unstoppable, unless of course, the inhabitants of that planet drove really fast around the sun, went back in time, located whales, invented transparent aluminum, traveled forward in time and crashed their stolen space ship into the water and released the whales for me to find. I neither “like” or subscribe to videos using AI.
I just can’t listen to THE narrator… I’m out !

How is it that AI can pronounce Russian last names, but not the word "degrees"?
😂
I thought the exact same thing
You have to spell degrees correctly. Turn on the CC and watch how it is spelled. LOL
Good question. 😂

Halfway through the video, the images changed to quonset huts, which are not re-purposed steel tanks.
But they are equally good and suitable for houses in the north.
@porkrind3512 the subject of this video was about re-purposing steel tanks. Quonset huts are not re-purposed tanks.

I don't think permafrost is a good insulator.
The cold air won't conduct heat away as bad as frozen earth.
Snow banking would be excellent, though.

I’d want it for a camp that would be perfect and affordable I’m sure in the mountains or way out in the country somewhere.
Nowhere in this do you actually see something being built.

Actually it is because it is all they can afford and will keep them alive in the winter.
Interesting that this video shows amixonstorage tanks and corrugated quansot huts
Can't imagine a better structure more suited for environments that are prone to termites.
How do you compare a quonset hut to a tanker trailer?
Bear resistance...😊
@ This………makes sense.
Can they be adapted to warmer climates, at this time because they look like they would be perfect for homeless communities.
Interesting like the Nissen Hut.
The beauty of these buildings is the simple fact that snow will not build up on the roof, a giant plus !!

The narrative jumps around such that this video is better understood with the sound turned off.
You can make hobbit houses burying them just underground.
I was thinking that also. Perfect hobbit dwelling that just need round doors .

Hmmm looks like we could do this with the rockets we send to Mars.....
As of 1944 we saw entire 'villages of round houses" in France.........

why the skip in saying how cold it is? audio is chopped..why? why? why?
