    Took only 2 years for me to get it. My job in the military required me to do 14+hr shifts 4 times a week, standing the entire shift, dressed in full gear. Neck pain started after 1 year, got horrible by the 3rd year, 4th year I got an MRI and thats where they gave me this diagnosis. I got out of the military after my 4 years, my neck still kills me daily, constantly cracking it all day, I just turn my head to look one direction and it cracks loud enough for everyone to hear, and I've developed a tic from it. I'm only 23 years old.

    Clear explanation. Helpful and informative. Thank you.
    I recently started having shoulder/arm tingling/numbness which progressed to pain/weakness. No neck pain though. Chiro xrayed, C spine is straight, no curve. Several dislocations, mostly C5 which is pushed way way back. Chiro hesitant to adjust due to advanced arthritis; had a specialist take more xrays. I hope they can come up with a plan.

      Hi it would be wise to get on natural anti-inflammatories regularly. Bromelain, Tumeric, and Ginger are known to be very helpful. I would be very aware of your every day ergonomic particularly your forward head posture and forward rotation of shoulders. It would be wise to strengthen the rhomboids and stretch the pecs.

    • @pawbiter
      @pawbiter 9 років тому

      I will do that. Thank you. And you are right about the forward head posture and forward rotation of the shoulders.

    Thanks again:) I needed to hear this today, received MRI results back this morning with C1-C7 DJD and extremely worried about if i will get better with continues therapy and steroid injection that is now scheduled for next month. This is always very helpful and like I said every thing you stated so far has work for me, posture , increase fluids and just staying cones of body alignment .

      Hi Bomb Shell, good posture, strong rhomboids ( see rhomboid exercises) will help you will the retraction of the shoulders. Be careful no to spend lots of time looking down with the head like texting and computer. Strengthen core as well...very important. You will be fine.

As for over 20 years have flown stunt kites looking up down left and right and being under strain, also looking down a lot on this I Pad. I shall now limit my flying and time on my I Pad. Thanks a lot for the very precise info, cheers.

    I am 6 days post op from ACDF on C5-6, and C6-7. The one thing I found out that wasn't talked about was the swollen tissues in my throat, I had a large Chondroitin/Glucosamine pill got stuck, and thank God my daughter was here with me, and she did the Heimlich Manuver and the pill flew out of my throat. Be careful, and use apple sauce or yogurt to swallow pills with, it helps them slide down.

    Hi doc, I’m a fan of your videos, they make a lot of sense to me. I could really use your help! My neck is very tight (can’t turn more than 45-degress) and 10 months ago had this excruciating clenching at right shoulder blade region (they put me on medrol and flexiril which helped around 75%), and I since have regular pain in same region and lately pins and needles in right fingers and now moving up my right arm, also have muscle spasms in right wrist and right arm and right chest regularly. Left back side of my neck is hard like a rock (feels like a steel rod). And I also have a tightness in my left jaw which I feel the need to regularly stretch/move around and even click (not sure if this is related?). They want to inject epidural in right neck, and facet injection in left neck. And also see a spine surgeon! I happen to work in high stress job (not sure if that info helps; I definitely feel everything tighten when stressed). What do you think I should do?? MRI findings… Overall: straightening of cervical lardosis, multilevel disc desiccation, the bony spinal canal is narrowed on a congenital basis. Individual: C2-C3: Right greater than left disc osteophyte resulting in mild neuroforaminal stenosis. C3-C4: Large right paracentral/foraminal osteophyte ridging resulting in mild/moderate stenosis as well as effacement of the right ventral thecal sac. C4-C5: Posterior disc ridging nearly completely effaces the ventral thecal sac, without definite frank cord compression. C5-C6: Posterior disc ridging, asymmetric to the right resulting in mid left neuroforaminal stenosis as well as near complete effacement of the ventral thecal sac without contract of the cord. C7-T1: Posterior disc ridging, asymmetric to right, partially effacing the ventral thecal sac. Impression: Congenital spinal stenosis with superimposed degenerative disease resulting in multilevel spinal canal stenosis. At C3-C4 there is stable indentation of the right ventral hemicord. THANK YOU!

      This all does appear to show myofascial changes and/or nerve root irritation affecting the neck region. MRI is a good idea. Although it does appear that this is all compounding as result of postural stresses your putting your body through. If you do take an MRI you can send me your impression of the radiological report.

      Hi, my email is motivationaldoc@yahoo.com
      There does appear to show degenerative changes. TC 3/4 herniation is not very common. Most important is good ergonomics. Strong rhomboids would be very helpful. And over the door traction unit may be effective for you which you can get on Amazon. What are your symptoms can be coming from myofascial changes as result of postural deformation. I would be careful not to excessively stress and over contract the upper trap muscles while exercising. Over the head presses would be contraindicated as well.

    I'm going for my mri in a few weeks and I'm scared to death! I've been having problems with my neck and pain going down my arm and actually into my fingertips. I've been doing your exercises with a towel and it has helped a lot! Just have to see what they say😢 I've been having this pain for two years now. The pain goes into my shoulder blade and down my arm then into my hand and fingertips with pins and needles in the tips. It's really bringing me down and depressed😢 when my neck cracks I can only describe it as it feels like broken biscuits. I've stop cracking and started your exercises with trying to correct my posture..

    Thank you so much for doing this explanatory video. I had suspected for some time this is what I had, then had it confirmed. In my case I have lumbar spindylosis as well as cervical spindylosis. Mine has gotten to the stage, along with a lot of osteoarthritis, I have to rely on walking aids all the time, or on bad days, my wheelchair. I still miss my old highly active life and do get that my body is now telling me basically that its pay back time, but with this being incurable and me still in my late 40's, what does scare me are the questions : Will this continue to worsen over the years? Or will it stay as it is now? Just how bad can it get from here? (I mean, in the long term, what could I be looking at as the worse case scenario, for example, 20 yrs from now?)

    I am 25 & I have had Cervical Spondylosis since I was around 14. I never had bad posture or leaned/ lifted incorrectly. I was always physically active. I started having head/neck aches around 14-15 years old. Even though I have had countless x-rays and MRI's my family doctor won't admit that because I have Cervical Spondylosis I am having neck spasms. It is so frustrating & I feel that for me to have this from such a young age & all the other problems that come with it, there has to be something else wrong with me. Is there anything besides "poor posture" that could cause osteoarthritis and Spondylosis at a young age. Is there anything I need to be tested for? Thanks I appreciate your videos :)

    My job requires that I look down (commercial airline pilot). I realize over 30 years of flying has created my problem (right side neck/trap pain and numb fingertips). I've tried every modality out there. Only thing that works is radio frequency ablation and that is only for about 4 months a pop. My question is there a proper way to look down? Is there a video on this? Sitting and looking down for long periods of time is unavoidable for me. Thanks for all the great videos.

    • @motivationaldoc
      @motivationaldoc  8 років тому

      Hey Mike, most important is that you try to get something behind your lower back while sitting a little pillow or a lumbar support pillow. That will bring the chest outwards as your shoulders will retract naturally allowing the head to come back as well. Try to focus on keeping your ears above your shoulders and tucking the chin downwards, preventing forward head posture will help you significantly.

    • @mikeshawe1724
      @mikeshawe1724 8 років тому

      +motivationaldoc Thank you for the quick reply. I also have adjustable arm rests on my seat in the cockpit. I've tried using them at different heights or not using them at all. I've found no relief either way. I usually don't use them at all. Any suggestions there? Last but not least, my neck problems stated above are amplified when (TMI alert!) I have to have a bowel movement. After its much better. Does this make any sense?

    • @motivationaldoc
      @motivationaldoc  8 років тому

      Armrests always better to use them without although must be at the correct level to get up and move effects. Pertaining to the Bowel movement if there is excessive force of you pushing outwards that can cause intrathecal pressure affecting the nerve root if there is compression.

    • @mikeshawe1724

    My X-rays from yesterday just showed osteophytes, minimal degenerative spondylosis of c5-6, and narrowing of the discs of C3-5-6... I have been complaining of neck pain, bilateral arm numbness and weakness, jerking of my legs while walking or laying, horrific headaches at the base of my neck.. I have been complaining for over 2 years with no help from my Dr. I keep getting told eventually the pain that has now become chronic will just go away. It hurts so bad some days that I can't even get up. But somehow, magically, it will just go away.

      Can a degenerative neck problem cause constant headache that never goes away and muscle twitching all over the body ? I ask because for over a year Iv had this problem and it came out of no where like a truck hit me ... how ever my brain mri is good and my initial reading of my spine was normal how ever a neck expert looked at it and said I have damage to my neck ... but I have to wait a month and a half to meet with him and that's all he told me ... I'm just curious if a neck problem can cause all these muscle to twitch every day from my feet to the top of my head ... and this terriable headache ..... it's truly awful man like my life is ruined I'm only 25 too but I guess all those years of football and the marines messed me up

    • @motivationaldoc
      @motivationaldoc  8 років тому +1

      Yes we can. Nerve irritation can affect the nervous system which I have seen many times in the past with other patients. Many of them have developed benign fasciculations syndrome that's what it appears that it sounds like you have. Continue focusing on the good posture hopefully time will run its course with your condition.

    My grandma (my moms step mom) is about 47. She has severe arthritis, but I don't know what kind. I know she can't turn her neck, her fingers are bent and she can't straighten them, and her joints hurt her all the time. I know her arthritis has something to do with her immune system because she can't take specific medicine or it will make her arthritis worse (basically because it is making her amine system stinger which is attacking her joints) I don't know if that's exactly how she explained it though. I know she got her arthritis at a very young age. About 16. Are there any possible procedures that can help her be able to turn her neck again and help her have no more joint pain. I enjoy helping my grandma... She is the best in the world, but I can't stand seeing her in pain (and may I add taking it like a boss) and I want to help so badly. P.S. Her arthritis is about 40 (rounded) years old and I think that may make a difference on if the procedures will help. Please reply❤️

    Dear Dr. Mandell,
    What kind of exercises can I do to train my core muscles when I have cervical spondylosis? My neck is very fragile as I have many associated autonomic nerve disorders such as eye pain, photophobia, giddiness and dizziness. I really don't wanna make things worse by doing the wrong exercises cuz it has happened many times. Please give me some advice when you have time. Thank you very much.

      I would not do anything too forceful to the joints with the spondylosis. You want to strengthen rhomboids stretch chest and do chin tucks.

    I've just found out I have bone spurs on my c3 and c4 discs up in the neck, and I AM PANICKED!! I sing a lot , could that have caused it? When I do sing it's so painful I have to stop,I need help and answers!? I don't want surgery is there a natural way to reverse this? I've got 4 kids and I don't stop running around and I'm stressed out! I have constant neck pain down the right side of my neck like a dragging down and burning sensation, I get a lot of phlegm, can't clear my throats and just have constant pain in my throat and neck.. I keep waking up with a dead hand, or arm, sometimes leg.. is this related, should I be worried?? I really hope you respond Dr Adrian..
    Kind regards, Melissa.

      Ruby Huang I have a lot of dizzyness also and I fell from a seizure and knocked a doorknob off with back of my head because I lost consciousness . Now I feel as if I have neck problems . I wake up with stiff neck every morning and the longer the day goes on my dizzyness gets worse, blurred vision, I can't be around a lot of light without feeling woozy. My anxiety is through the roof now. I'm gonna try some anti inflammatory stuff like he mentioned the natural way and maybe some rubs and screams in those areas and ice. But I definitely feel like I strained my neck good and my dizzyness is out of control

    I have slight numbness in left hand and moderate numbness in right forearm and hand. Today's xrays show, Advanced spondylosis with severe disc space loss and endplate osteophytosis at C4-C5, C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels. Moderate to severe left-side bony foraminal stenosis at C6-C7. My doctor advises physical therapy. He says its not my age, I'm 52. Says I did something to it, that most people my age don't have this problem. I prefer not to go to therapy if there is something I can do at home. Your thoughts please.

    • @motivationaldoc

      Cervical spondylosis is just another name for degenerative joint disease/arthritis. This is very very common so don't panic. This is usually caused by excessive forward head posture over the course of time. My best advice would be to do the exercises for forward head posture which I have plenty on my channel. Follow good ergonomics and do light exercises and stretches. The most important thing is preventing this from getting worse.

      Positioning of your anterior forward head lean is putting excessive load on the neck muscles and ligaments. Many people have spondylosis especially after 35. Your going to have to try to find better biomechanics for the neck and body by changing up your bike or angle of the handle bars so your not leaning over as far. A good massage/neuromuscular therapist may do you well too.

      Focus on jutting the chin downwards rather than head flexion. Ice is always good with natural anti inflammatories like turmeric, ginger, and cayenne. Work on good postural mechanics away from forward head posture.
