- 15 Best Ways on How to Soundproof a Door That Actually works!
The most Important step when soundproofing any room in your home or office is to make sure the door is soundproof. The door is, of course, the biggest opening in most places that anyone would attempt to soundproof.
How to Soundproof a Door? The best way to soundproof a door in your home or office would be to install a solid core door. Also, attaching a rubber door sweep that is tight enough on the floor will seal the lower gap completely.
There are many other ways to sound proof a door since installing a solid core door can be expensive; especially for people on a low soundproofing budget.
So, that being said, I will think of every single way on how to soundproof a door so you can make a sound decision on which steps are best for you.
I wasn't going to do a video about how to sound proof a door because there is already some great information out there online. But I did realize there is some missing information that could prove very useful in your soundproofing project.
Here is a list of recommended products that we talk about in this video to make your soundproofing hacks easy peasy!

step 1: get rid of the door
step 2: build a wall where the door originally was and done

Wait, what’s a solid core door again?
A door that is not hollow.
@@YBeastt 👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shut up
Look it up
Cheap plastic hollow door should never be used. That's he saying
Bit too much time on what solid means and what hollow means.
seriously
hollow means the inside of the door is empty. Solid means theres solid material inside
@@DanielScariti thanks for clearing that up

Genius ideas! I especially like the gap filler idea
good video m8, I'm going through sound proofing a jack&jill washroom at the moment
just wanna say, that putting foam around the door, and a door sweep did it for me ! nice, and txs
AdrianJayeOnline what kind of foam?
Was it acoustic foam?
@@brianpogasic7976 I have acoustic foam and it works like 10-15% for higher frequency noise

Hello, great video! I saw on the door swip part that you show a foam tube like swip. How much would it differ from the rubber flat ones? thanks!
Thanks for making this video! You saved me a lot of money :)
Thanks you man💯💯
Thank you...very helpful
THANK YOU for all these helpful tips!! Appreciate it and can't wait to try these.
Tremendously useful: thanks.

Thanks a lot for the video! This is very helpful as I am working on my studio, and will definitely try to fill the doors since I have an spare door from a room we removed of my house. Its going to be 2 doors + gaps sealed and filled. Should do the trick, so my wife its not mad at me because of my drums 😆
Best of luck! Let me know how it turns out! 😊
Hey soundproof guide, I'm thinking of using the weather strip and door sweep on a bedroom door, but as the windows are tightly sealed double glazing, I'm wondering where the overnight ventilation would come from for the room ? The only place I can think is the ceiling fan in the ensuite, although the fan itself is off at night. Should I be concerned about how airtight the soundproofing is ? Thank you
You might have openable vents at the top of the windows. They're often hidden quite well so may only be noticeable when opened.
Thanks so much! Very well done.
Great info Thank you
Thank You
The only method I found really works is two doors , both quite nicely sealed. It creates an air gap in between and almost no sound is heard inside or outside of room.
Yes that’s a great method, especially for someone with a music studio!
Instructions unclear, French doors made worse
Soundproof Curtain would be enough together with doors
Agreed. I have two doors but may still need to use some tips like the door sweep and the adhesive strips because the outer doors has spaces, allowing bird whistles to penetrate.
Very well done
Ty, You solved my problem!
Great video! Thank you very much!
Thank you!
Hello! Thank you for your video :) I have a question regarding the Self Adhesive WeatherStrip. I live in a rented flat and maybe in a few years the landlord will want it back so...are they easy to remove? or how does the procedure work? Thanks!!!!
I'm sure you've already figured it out by now but for anyone else that is curious about this....yes they are very easy to remove and if there is any sticky residue, WD40 and a rag will take it right off👍
@@BreeceMatarazzo Thank you!
awesome video, very helpful!! just one question, whats the difference between a hollow and solid door? could’ve elaborated on that a bit further
Thanks so much. Very helpful.
Great video 👍 just had one question. How to sound proof the tiled floors?
Thank you! Soundproofing tiles would have to begin on the lower level.
The reason we would place a soft mat on top of the tiles would be to absorb the echo inside the bathroom and to make less noise when walking in it than hard flooring.
Check out soundproofguide.com for more information and tutorials on soundproofing.
Really useful
Thanks, Now i can keep my victims nice and quiet when i capture them. Won't have an incident like a few years back, when I had to kill the neighbor after he came over to see what all the screaming was.

I've sand baged some hollow core doors. Heavy! , but does an excellent job for cheap. King Frost closed cell foam strips around door frame. Floor sweep is a pain and wears out to fast - use a an adjustable. Rubber threshold seal ( the rubber is easily replaced). Been
Thanks for the tip about the sand! I’ll have to try it out this week!!! That’s an awesome idea!
@@soundproofguide Glad to be of help.
How do you do that? Sandbag a hollow core door?
@@sandragaribay06 U have to remove 1 side of the door. Line it with a thick mil. Plasitic bag with dry sand enclosed. Most hollow core doors are devided I with a 1x or 2x top, middle and bottom, so u will use two bags. Reattach the side of the door u removed. Another option is to actually construct a hollow core door ( very easy) and process as above. U may have to reinforce the door with L brackets inside.
@@sandragaribay06 I would think that you pour the sand from the top BUT I think it would be too heavy for the bottom piece.
Hey man, just putting a link here, used your tips and tricks, gave your channel a mention in the description, txs a lot, keep up the good work !

Hi there, do you know if the acoustic sealant is made of removable non-permanent material? I want to soundproof this door in my rented space, but will need to return it to its original condition when I move out. Thanks! @@soundproofguide
@@ariellhsu7011 The acoustic sealant is like caulking and would not easily peel off. The weatherstrip I recommend in the description would be an option since you could peel it off before you lease is up.
Thanks for the guide, I've been getting into singing recently and don't want to annoy my family.
Would you recommend putting anything in the space between the doorframe and the rough opening? My doors have about 1/2” gap on either side of the doorframe and the only thing blocking sound coming through is the door casing. Thanks.
acoustic sealant and weather stripping
What a fantastic video and fantastic Channel! I never really leave comments but in this case I felt compelled to do to how valuable this content is, I'm so happy it exists
don't make the mistake of fill the hollow door with expendably foam. that's a bad idea. just buy a solid core door and if you budget is small just buy a used one.
Yep foam can break a hollow door right open, not mention spray foam is a horrible sound insulator. Mass is the answer, the more dense the better.
I did the same but not with foam, but with an epoxy-like solution that solidifies. I sealed all the holes all around the door, poured it from the top and let it solidify. It added cca 50 kilos to the door of course, but honestly, i can barely hear any sound coming through from the hallway.
@@RobertNemeti now that's a solid door !
@@RobertNemeti What did you use or what would you recommend?
Yeah this doesn't work. Because hollow is actually usually a honeycomb so not much of the door is filled.
Thanks!
First time I finally understood weatherstripping: 1) comes in doubles, meant to be split apart. 2) Stick the adhesive part where the door touches the frame. Thank you, thank you for showing the closeups!!!
Glad I could help! ☺️
thanks, you the door man
This is great thanks!!!
Please don’t ever use this video music again🙃
Play it at 2x speed and the music becomes funnier :P
Don't try putting spray foam inside a hollow-core door! It will expand like a bag of microwave popcorn.
and when the sound is heard, popcorn is ready.
Literally what I was thinking of doing
If you use 2k foam (expands max 30% and drill enough holes for overflow... No problem
@@nonameneeded4605 Maybe but I wouldn't try it. Even if it doesn't blow up the door, you will have to patch all the holes. D:
@@alanhall6909 we juss did it few days ago, there is a little expanding 2k foam, closing the gaps were like 2 mins... Combined with rubber isolation around the door= inexpensive but great sound proofing, just trust us balkan = European Mexicans when it comes to building
Superb Work 👌👌👍👍
Keep Good Work
Not everyone has that much space
How about stick cork on the door and on top of that wood stain the color that you like so it look nice😁idk maybe will work
how do I soundproof my drop ceiling to reduce noise in room above
I didn't get the Isulation spray foam..where exactly do we make holes in door? And why, what effect do we get from few holes?
Got solid core door recommendations? Like the cheap DIY person from home Depot/Lowes to the extreme ones that cost a couple thousand? I want to soundproof, but it seems impractical for me to buy the super expensive ones I've seen when it seems combining all the other methods will still be in the low $100s
try the double door idea, even with cheaper doors its extreme effect.
Hi, my room is small and low cieling just 7 feet, there is no sound preefing work has done, can i use this room for voice recording ? please advice me.
which is best for soundproofing? u shaped door sweep, normal door sweep, or draft stopper?
The best type of door sweep for noise reduction is the ones made of rubber.
Check out the link in the description and you’ll be redirected to Amazon to the one I recommend.
If you can somehow get foam inside of the door will it help or no
liked and subbed
that blanket literally looks like castle just reinforced my door

I would really love to see if any example test on this part, cause I got a high school son and he can really shuts
while he play games with his bodies
Would the weather strip contain smoke?
Gonna make my own door. What would be the best material to use as its core for soundproofing?
buy hollow door, fill with cement. add more hinges to support weight
@@khandam7709 that's a crazy idea
AMAZING soo thnxs;)
"I will think of every single way you can sound proof a door... so you can make a 'sound' decision" :)
Easy way! Just get some soundproofing foam cut out the area where the knob and hinges will be then attach it to the door make sure you can still open it then BOOM soundproofed!
I hope that works because I just bought a bunch of foam to put on my door
foam sadly works only on higher frequency noise
Sealing the bottom of the door may hinder the return air for the heat/AC system. Check your return air system before sealing it
Great point! Especially in older homes where you might not have an air exchange system installed!
Thank you for commenting!
@@soundproofguide Some manufactured homes have this same issue, so the real question is what can you do in these cases to allow air movement but reduce the noise?
@@andy1utz the answer is an HVAC unit that works with door closed
@@andy1utz Install a makeup air grille above the door. They make special ones for air passage plus sound isolation.
Guide: "This weatherstrip is self-adhesive, and that is a must-have for this type of project."

“you could do to 15 stores, or just 6”
5:30 Sound travels through air
It travels through all matter
Another way would be to trims and put roxul wool between the frame and the wall
That’s a great idea! Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you for this video my dude
The HVAC guys usually expect a one inch gap underneath interior doors for the air returns to work correctly. So do most building codes. A door sweep removes that gap. What can we do about that?
Get a draft stopper and place it there when there is too much noise.
I get how It would help with soundproofing but how am I supposed to walk thru a solid corridor?
This is the best explantion on the internet. Thank you!
